Mothers Back to Black...worst product ever??

I use STP Son Of A Gun, and it works very well :xyxthumbs:

I had purchased and used this product a few years ago. Total disappointment. I threw it in the garbage.

:iagree: It is one of the worst products I've tried as well. I'm surprised to see that it's still on the market. Oh well. Ultima UTTG is my protection of choice now. :xyxthumbs:

UTTG is da bomb! :dblthumb2:

BTW, I have also used Back to Black numerous times and could never get good results with it. It was too runny and always turned out blotchy, no matter how I applied it.

Was gonna throw mine away as well. But I use it on the lawn mower instead.
One way to use it up.........

I have a shelf full of trim restore products and at one time or another I believe I have used just about every product that’s ever been made, most of them with very mixed results. In the trim restore product line almost all of them are a some type of greasy, oily product that sits on the surface, attracts dust and does not last.

Below is Just My Humble Opinion...
I recently tried Dry Shine - Black Trim Restorer and I'm happy with the results. It took 5-10 minutes to prepare and apply to the entire rear bumper pad. My gray bumper trim is now dark black (it's water based and contains a black dye). It is hard, dry, not greasy and it has a nice dark deep shine to it. Now if it lives up the claim "LASTS for months...even years!", rather than weeks (or less) like other products I have tried, I’ll be a very happy camper.

So far it's been on over a month and my bumper still looks exactly the same as the pics below.

If you want a cheap/WOWO/in 2 minutes then this is not for you. It takes a bit longer to apply.

If you want something hard, makes trim black, is dry & lasts then you may wish to check it out.
BTW - I like the Dry Shine - Tire Treatment stuff too. Again this is JMHO-Your results may vary.

I used the Back to Black again today. I noticed that it does actually work. You just have to put quite a bit on. When I read the instructions on the back...it says to apply liberally. Maybe that's what I was doing wrong. :dunno:

I'll use it up...but I won't be buying anymore of this stuff. I'm gonna try the UTTG, possibly the Black Wow, and maybe something on the cheaper side to use on the bulk of my vehicles. Cause honestly, most customers really don't care about how long their plastic, and trim is shiny. But for my Gold, and Platinum packages...I'll use the good stuff (If I can find it!). :dblthumb2: Thanks guys!

I thought b2b went on ok and had a decent look, but it would run horribly as soon as it would rain. Gave it multiple chances.

anyone else try the renu finish?

Mini Review

RENU FINISH – Automotive Trim Restorer

Manufacturer Overview
"ReNu FINISH™ is a tested product proven to treat and restore a variety of exterior plastic trim
ravaged by time and the elements. There is no need for taping or spray guns. ReNu FINISH™
simply wipes on to treat and restore exterior faded plastic trim pieces on your vehicle. After the
application, a gentle hand buffing refreshes the trim to showroom new condition."

Test Area:
I cleaned the area with IPA then applied ReNu Finish Auto Trim Restorer to the faded bumper trim.
I followed the included manufacturers directions and procedure that are included in the package.

First Impressions:
I found ReNu Finish has better directions than some "other" products and good applicator pads.
I'm not thrilled with the ReNu Packaging. I really hate those "marketing" plastic cut-aways.

Application:
ReNu Finish is easy to apply, a forgiving, simple application with little to no streaking.

Look:
ReNu Finish does make the trim black, it has a very slight shine.
More of a matte finish that some other products I've tried.

End Impressions:
I have had a little difficulty applying other "long lasting" trim restorers on slightly bumpy trim.
ReNu Finish was much easier to apply on flat trim, and I encountered no streaking issues.
I had no issues with the product running down the paint after a rain and that's a good thing!

Durability:
I appeared (for me) that it lasted about 2-3 months from a single application.
IMHO not the "longest lasting" product but much better than trim dressings.

Epilogue:
ReNu Finish Auto Trim Restorer did a good job making trim black and it's consumer use friendly.

Plastic, rubber, and vinyl especially on the exterior can be challenging to keep looking good. Out of all the products I've tried the ones I've been very pleased with in order are:

  1. Ultima Tire and Trim Guard
  2. CarPro PERL
  3. Wolfgang Vinyl and Rubber Protectant

I think you're better off never putting anything on exterior trim

have you tried cg new look trim gel? awesome product. different in the respect it takes just a few drops of product. it bonds with the trim. best i have used to date. i feel the same about BLACK WOW. it did not wow me. a lot is in the prep of the trim. make sure it is cleaned with a good AIO and dried before using said product.

I read through this entire thread and I'm actually a little surprised to see nobody mention Black Wow.

I get better results with Black Wow when used on small areas. Such as the few square inches where the side mirrors attach to the door.

For some reason, just can't get Black Wow to work well on the grill. (Perhaps it just me, lol.)

SolutionsFinish. A tad pricey, but it does work, has minimal runoff from rain and I've waxed over it with Collinite 845 and 476S more than a few
times. Latest was yesterday.

This is pretty good stuff. Seems like it's silicone based, but I'm not sure. It's clear. Seems like it would be good for a pro detailer, as it leaves stuff pretty dark and shiny.

I can vouch for that! Easy to work in with excellent results.
The price makes it even better, and the smell won't kill you.

Be sure to wipe off if you get it on the paint.
