Engine Bay Cleaning

I hear that. I love my extractor for carpets. I just see no reason to venture elsewhere for that. But for buses...can definitely see that being useful. I bought mine through home depots web site. I love having it around. But I definitely don't use it as much as I thought I would. Although, I found out yesterday that its great for snowmobiles, ha. Really handy to break down bad stains too. It has its particular uses for sure.

Amazon has a steamer that is on sale for 78 dollars. Wagner 905 good? I might pick this up.

Out of curiosity, has anybody had any problems as a result of spraying down an engine with water? Electrical problems, part failures, etc.? I'm just one of those weird people who kinda freaks out about taking any water under the hood. Just afraid of messing something up. I posted the link because I thought it might be helpful. I have cleaned under the hood using a "rinseless method" - check it out: Cleaning an engine with just ONR, APC, and Hyper Dressing - Car Care Forums: Meguiar's Online. However, I think that method is best suited to engines that are only lightly dirty, not really nasty dirty.
I had always been one to be skeptical for the need to cover things just because I had never had a problem using a pressure washer, but I did a Jetta with the VR6 engine just using a garden hose and the service engine light came on immediately afterward. It was a friend"d car and I told him to just let it dry out for a few days but instead he took it to the dealership and they soaked him for $500 for diagnostics and a new sensor of some sort.

After that job I am a little more cautious about engine cleaning and either get a liability waiver or refuse the job on dirtier engines. Slightly dirty engine bays I just wipe down like B&B has suggested.

Just curious, would a pump up weed sprayer have enough pressure to remove degreaser? Seems like the spray would be easier to control, and not be so apt to penetrate seals, etc.

On my vehicles, I usually use apc and old towels, then dress the hoses and plastic, but the engines are not that dirty to begin with.

I seriously may do that - my biggest use would be for bus interiors though - so much surface to deal with that I think the Steamer would not only do great on but would save alot of time and products..... engines and stuff like that are perks of the machine in my eyes. Although I can say - and this gets brought up ALOT here - if it doesn't perform well on carpets, I am sending back and going back to the mytee lite II and getting the 150 dollar steamer.

If are set on getting both have a look into the Vapor Clean GAIA. It's an all in one steamer with injection and extractor for a competitive price.

Yup!

Like you mentioned, not a lot of pressure, but it is nice to get into those little hidden areas w/o drowning the whole the whole bay. Also a lot less runoff to worry about or have to contend with.

Can I just spray APC on the plastic bits of the engine bay, wipe with a damp rag then apply a protectant ? is it worth using a protectant ? whats a good cheap one ?
