So i just got my AG order today and got my pcxp! The top was very loose and i slighty pushed it and it came right off. Do i have to push it back in there hard or is it broke?

Hmmm, I read elsewhere that if you operate the PC without the handle attached, the top will come loose. I haven't had this issue (knock on wood) but maybe this is what you're experiencing...

All the PCXPs are like that. The handle is actually what holds the head cover on the machine, or if you want to use it without the handle you can just install a hex-head bolt to hold it on.

The top piece will just slide back on your polisher, nothing's broken.

a bolt! thats what i am going to look for. i really dont like handles at all. i love the loop handles but not the stick handles. hey thanks for the bolt idea, ill sure look for one

take the PC with you to your local hardware store and find two bolts that you can put on each side. take the handle with you so someone can look at the threading and length to find what will fit best...

Problem Solved! :props:

Thread size is: 5/16-18 OR M8x1.25. About 3/4 length for either works.

Not really, when the 5/16 didn't feel right, grabed M8.

I found out the PC changed the thread design last year (2010, I think it was).

Ah.

Yeah, to be honest the PCXP doesn't feel anywhere near as solid as the first-gen 7424s, at least as far as the casing is concerned.

Its a shame you have to visit a hardware store after purchasing a "New Item" just to make a product usable

Maybe PC should include these .05 cent bolts with every order

Not Porter Cable! I was talking to the store manager at a local tool shop where I bought a new XP in an emergency, then later returned it after 10 minutes of use as it burned out. The manager was going through the box, and said if anything, even the box is damaged or missing, Porter Cable will charge the store for them.

I agree, though, they should have considered users that don't use handles and either had better retention for the piece or an extra bolt. The loose piece make the unit sound louder than it really is, and is really annoying. But my original PC is just the same :(

But my original PC is just the same :(

It is? I've put my original PC through some serious abuse over the last 10 years and the case has never shown those sort of issues.

That said, you couldn't give me a PCXP. Build quality seems like junk by comparison.

I guess I've been lucky, I've worked for days and days on my vehicle with the 7424XP, without the handle attached, and haven't had a problem. But now I guess I'll go buy some bolts just in case. The last thing I need is for the thing to fall apart and maybe scratch the vehicle ...
