I burn my friend car paint with my PC :(

Yesterday, i was working on my friend infinity G37s, when i was working on the small area on the door, i switched to a 4 ich orange ccs pad. I was on speed 6, and suddenly there are some white smoke coming out from the pad. Therefore, i turned the pc off, and i found out i burned the paint :(. I have to pay my friend to paint his door, sigh..... I was doing section pass with normal arm speed, and i always thing PC is a safe tool:(
 
I think speed 6 with a small pad is what did it.

What product were you using?

Maybe or maybe not:(, i think is time to upgrade to a Flex, because i don`t like to use my pc . First, the vibration from the pc is terrible. Every time i finish detail a car, when i got home, my hand feel very painful. Second, pc takes a long time to take the swirl off( not enough power i think). Finally, every time when i use my pc with a 4 inch pad on, it sound which come from the motor is extremely sharp, which hurt my hear a lot. I owned this pc for 6 month, and i plan to upgrade to flex when there is a sale, but i think after this event( burn my friend car paint). I might buy an flex after i receive my next pay check . I am done with the pc :pc7424:
 
It's pretty hard to burn paint with a PC. I suspect a thin spot or flaw in that area. It's not a forced rotation machine and too much pressure will bog it down.
 
Infiniti's are known for having extremely thin paint. I have not personally seen one, but I know of several detailers who have gotten paint readings in the low 80's on brand new infinitis. This is a perfect example of why a paint gauge should be in everyone's tool box that does paint correction regardless of the tool.

As far as disliking the PC, what pads do you use? A PC DA can be a very good tool to remove swirls if you use the right pads and polish. SIP is not a compound, and it's not going to remove tons of defects, especially on an orange pad. If you want to step it up you need to get a compound like M105 and a surbuf pad or the Megs MF pads. Pad technology has come so far in the past couple years that there is no reason your DA shouldn't remove all but the deepest swirls and RIDS.

Also if you are worried about burning paint with your DA, you are going to have to be even more careful with the Flex DA since it does have more power. You should get comfortable with the easiest tool before you move up the chain. Just my .02

I did a few Infinitis recently and when I was taking readings on all the cars ('10 and '07) there wasnt a reading above 100 microns. They definitely have thin paint.

Why dont manufactures spray more clear on there... they make our job hard

I can only imagine how much money it saves them to spray all of their cars with less clear. Whats funny is my Nissan which cost less than $20k has more clear than any Infiniti I have ever seen...doesn't make much sense to me...lol
 
Were you holding the polisher in one spot? I find it would be VERY hard to burn paint if the polisher is constantly moving.

+1, i think there was some dry spot on his pads. normally, my pads dont even heat up much......

Although the term is "burn" the paint, it doesn't require tons of heat to happen. Although if there is a lot of heat it is a lot more likely to happen.
 
I burned the paint on the hood of a BMW (using PC 7424XP) that had been repainted. So, been there-done that, real sorry to hear about it..and I paid for a repaint also. I'm not going to second guess what you did because the paint is still burnt and you're still paying for it. I don't know that a Flex would help in this situation; in fact a Flex could make it worse. You might try one out first. Menz Intensive Polish w/ orange pad- haven't heard about that combination.

For smoke to appear, you musta been using some extremally heavy pressure along with holding it in one spot. You can't do that :nomore:

I'm sorry for what happened. I know the feeling, I went through a clear coat layer with the Griot's 3" DA. Even with equipment that's considered very safe, it pays to be careful and mindful of what you're doing. My car's been in the shop all week getting repainted, a job that's going to cost me $1200.

It's a recommended combo according to the menzerna compound chart? :dunno:

Ive used it before myself a few times with good results.
