What the hell are these (Spots On Paint)

Can he go back to where he had it parked and check out the tree and ground? I 2nd the fungus i have seen the aftermath from people trying to get it off before bringing in the car for some help. Crap is beyond a pita to remove. I can't say though on a dark colored car as ive only seen it on the light colors. Any-who, if it is indeed the fungus you should be able to find the blobs still at the parking spot.

Only thing that would lead me to think its something other than the fungus is if the owner didnt have a hard time getting the the spots off during the wash while they were still black. If they just came off like it was nothing out of the normal then i have no ideas left.

Ya i wish he could but we live in Az and this happened in cali so can't just drive over and check out the area unfortunately.

We'll probably try wet sanding, as nothing else has worked yet.

i have something similair on my car after wetsanding a scratch. i wetsanded, compounded and noticed these whitish spots coming out. interestingly enough, i believe this panel was re-cleared. i figured i had gone too deep in wetsanding, i might try to wetsand it again just to see what happens.

id definately try to wetsand one of those and see what happens. even if u make it worse hell have to get the car repainted either way. tbh im not sure you have another option other than wetsanding.

let us know if wetsanding does the trick :dblthumb2:

i found this online, maybe itll help:

ps, are you insured?

I sure hope it does the trick! Nope not insured lol...thus my main hesitation but i dont think i'll be using anything more than 3000 grit. I advised him to have his painter check out the thickness if he can get the car over to him...that way we'll have an idea how much paint we're working with....hope he finds time to do it...if not then i'll try it out on some centrally located spots (away from edges) and go slow lol

Just read through the entire thread... not a fun problem, especially after doing such a phenomenal job buffing out the car initially.

The part that's making this confusing is that the paint has been sanded and buffed in the past and the spots did not appear.

Buffed again down the road and now spots appear.

The spots are either topical, that is on the very surface of the paint, or they are sub-surface stains, that is whatever is causing the discoloration is "in" the paint.

Since all the topical remedies you've tried have not worked and you cannot feel a difference in the level of the paint surface, this pretty much means the defects are "in" the paint or sub-surface.

To remove them you're only options at this time are to abrade the surface. If it were me, I would try wetsanding just one spot using #2000 or #2500 then remove your sanding marks and inspect. (Or try compounding just one spot with one or two fingers applying pressure).

When you abrade a spot, the appearance is either going to get better or stay the same, this would be an indicator of how deep the staining penetrates into the clear layer of paint.

As for the origin of the spots, hard to think they were always there but never visible till you buffed out the car, I suppose it's possible. I've seen DA Polishers leave results on paint that rotaries don't leave.

Maybe try running a rotary buffer over a section with a compound just for troubleshooting purposes.

Also, if the spots are uniformly round and on both horizontal and vertical panels, this tends to make me think the problem did not happen recently from an outside source because it would be too hard to create these types of round spots on both vertical and horizontal panels through any man-made attempts. Think about it, how could you create these if that were your goal?

This leads me to think they are paint-related and the defects that were created in the re-clearing process and then revealed after enough material was removed. You just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...

:)

ive been told that it is contaminents in the paint gun or air line mostly oil got in the paint. so i am going to repaint my car soon.

Well a bitter sweet end to this..the insurance guy that came out to view it said he recommends that it gets sanded down and re-cleared again. So i wont get a chance to try spot wet sanding it....but the owner is going to have us come back out after the painting is done and the cure time has passed to re-polish it out and get it back to how we had it before....

Unfortunately anyone that's ever shot automotive finishes has at one time or another had particles from a former color rear its ugly head. For the most part this stems from improper or not thoroughly cleaning the gun after a job.

Typically, these errant particles of off color paint become suspended in the new paint and is apparent almost immediately. Now shooting a dark color after a different dark color may not be as noticeable but a good painter should be able to pick this up.

I remember shooting a white Ford Torino and although I was certain I had properly clean my gun the specks of dark blue were found on several panels. It was a labor intensive fix as those panels had to be stripped, sanded, sealed, and repainted.

I had both of my guns professionally hot tank cleaned and man what a job they did!!

What still strikes me odd is how meticulous the detailing job was and not one sign of this was noticed until some time later....Just very odd....

Will, you're a young guy with great eyes and allot of experience. If these specks were there when you were finished detailing this Camaro you would have seen them just as easily then as you do today....

He should've never had it recleared in the first place. Sounds very expensive to me

The question I would like to see answered is:

Who the hell parks a car like that on the STREET?

I think Wills said a while back that the guy had some pinstriping or something done and cleared over it.

Yup yup, he had rally stripes (the silver stripes) put down the middle and had them trimmed in orange...and also had a custom 4 leaf clover put on the top of the center of the hood....so had the whole thing sanded down and re-cleared...and AGAIN....a reclear means thicker clear on top which means you can polish it out more times if its ever needed.
