Griots 6" DA. Generation 1 -vs- Generation 2

Is it just me or does the first gen Griot's look really similar to a Dewalt DW443?

Might be the case. Something still feels different though

When I'm on speed 6 with the new one, it feels like speed 5 with the old one :buffing:

Maybe it's an upgrade... or maybe just poor standard control from the chinese factory...
Mine at speed 5 starts to roar.... at 6 it just goes crazy... I would say speed 6 on mine might have 30% more power than on 5.... it's not very linear...

I know the first didn't have removable back plates. I didn't realize they changed it twice since then. I thought it was just once

That is how it came

My understanding is there is only two versions.

The new one has more power before cutting out so you have better correction. The old one almost too safe.

Twister says the first one didn't had removable backing plate, so we are probably on the third gen now...... and maybe on the 4th as flash gordon stated some differences between the old one and the new one because both seems to be v2 (or v3).

It would be great if Griot's could clear this matter because there's too much confusion around it..... You need to know what you're buying before taking the money out of the pocket also this mystery about versions can lead costumer into a bad choice....

I also was under the impression that there were only two, differentiated by the physical traits. This is also what I have read on other forums.

I'll be getting a new Griots 6 inch orbital tomorrow . I'll take some pics and post them .

I've never seen the Dewalt unit. Hey! speaking of Dewalt. Don't they own Porter Cable?

:iagree: My old unit on 6 sounded like it was about to lift off. The new unit is much quieter. I'm just wondering if Griots has perfected the machine, or decreased its power :buffing:

I think it would be safe to say there have been at least 3 versions :)

I don't see any physical difference in either unit, but your welcome to add a :Picture:

I reviewed the gen 1 Griots DA 5 years ago. See it here (please disregard pics of my lil girl. I named them the same as the DA pics and it replaced them. You still get the idea) ------> I think I like it !! The thread is titled "I like it" because after doing a test panel I did in fact like th emachine. It wasn't until I took it out into the real world to perform real world detailing I changed my mind.

Thanks for your insight Joe. I try to work only on pristine cars. When I get something ruff, I reach for the ratary. My wrists can't take the punishment trying to work a DA in these cases

Your little girl is adorable! Musta gotten her good looks from her mother :poke:

No argument from me about her looks. LOL! She is getting BIG. She is 8 now.

Another thing about Griots. They have awesome customer service. I returned the machine about a year later and they took it back. No questions asked.

So are we saying that as far as "looks" that there are 2 versions but as far as "guts" (?) there have been 3 versions. When were they released. I only have owned one Griots DA and it was purchased May 2011. Is this the 2nd or 3rd version?

What is she shooting at, squirrels? I like to take potshots at those rats with furry tails too!!!

I agree with Griots having great customer service. I still don't feel very confident in their tech dept though.

There are at least 3 versions IMO

1) Didn't have a removable BP

2) On speed 6, sounded like it was going to orbit into space at any moment

3) A milder version of #2. On speed 6 the noise and vibration is much less then there is with #2.
Having said that. Its next to impossible to stop the BP from spinning on 6, so I guess all is good! :buffing:

Any estimated released dates?

Dearest Mark,

What difference did you notice between the one your brother ran over and the one you have now? (if any)

I'm guessing that I have the 2nd generation and that the 3rd gen is the one that Mark returned twice?

I think your guess is right

I'm still waiting to hear what Mark has to say. Unless my memory has gone out, it seems he had to replace his earlier this year and didn't think the second unit was as powerful?

I may be wrong, but usually not :buffing:

I got mine in July and it has the craziness on the speed 6... maybe the 3rd version was out somewhere this semester...

Right, he felt that it had lost power in comparison to I assume gen 2 and returned it. He is now using the Meg and eventually he will have issues with the cord ;)

I bet they did power them down a little. Mine will eat pads at speed 6. It is a monster. I bet they got tired of replacing pads.

Flash, you must not be getting the right tech people. I used to ask for Dustin. Not sure he is still there. I have not had a tech problem in a long time (once I turned my speed down to 5 and quit smoking pads.)

Best I can wreckelekt then is the newest model came out between July and Oct  thanks for helping me narrow it down :dblthumb2:

Thats what I thought he said. Its Mark who actually got me a little paranoid anticipating this new units arrival

Sure would be nice to hear what his opinion is.....YO, Mark? :help:

To be honest, alot of times (if not most) I would run my old unit on 5, because something about 6 never felt right. Especially using the KBM

Having said all that, for some reason this unit reminds me of the go-karts you rent from one of those side of the road attractions. They always have a restrictor to keep you from being able to reach full throttle. I use to always reach back there and "open it up" before they started putting fiberglass bodies over them. When I was younger there was this older gentleman who would always give me the hairy eyeball when he'd see me in line :)

For those who have used both, can you tell a difference, and if so, what?

The first model didn't work, at least it wouldn't maintain pad rotation under pressure.

There are a lot of oribtal wood sandiners on the market and for the most part only the Porter Cable and the tools modeled after the PC will actually rotate and occillate foam pads under pressure.

That's right, I said sander! The Porter Cable Dual Action Sander is the tool that became the Tipping Point that was the driving force behind the average person switching from working by hand to working by machine.
