Lesson for new car buyers :)

Nice Mustang!! Thanks for the tips on the dealer stuff. You reminded me I need to let mine know the same stuff. Like you I'm getting rid of my Z (350 in my case) except I'm moving over to a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited ordered direct from the factory so I could get the options and color I want.

Ok boys and girls...what the OP is not telling you is that he called the dealership every day, at least 3 times a day saying "DO NOT TOUCH MY CAR" when it comes in. I know, I work with this nut .

The salesperson actually is a car-guy and understood although I know it is part of the delivery process to wash the car after it comes off the truck so he was torn. Truth be told, I would buy a car from him any day.

I didn't get to see the OP's car until a couple days later and it looks even better in person. The Kona Blue has so much depth and it is truly swirl free. If the OP needs help with the polishing I'll give him some pointers :).

I also want to add one thing, the OP moved from to this car in part because he will now be able to take his son with him. The OP is too humble about the reason but I think it's a stand up reason.

Mike... you stinker :D hehe, thanks for the props man. You're welcome to help on Marilyn any day. And for the record, yes, I DID harass that poor sales manager on the status of my car. That 2 month long wait for it to arrive was hell on earth. And yes I did make 100000% sure that NO one touches my car. Esp no holes drilled in front for plates. What was funny, is they didn't even drill any for the REAR plates. LOL. I am still silently thinking of ways to mount my rear plate with no screws... hmmmm

You have great taste in women and I love the color and the lack of surface defects! The blue is sinfully wet and it might be wise to park it on plastic as I'm sure she's still dripping....:props:

Congratulations and good luck!! :dblthumb2:

Bobby I appreciate it. Your vette is looking sexy as always.

Good for you to take the right steps to get what you want and paid for... I am guilty of the same.

The next step is to go in and have a little meet and greet with the service manager and advisors to let them know how you like your car treated (ie: don't wash or even touch the paint). Works well for me

Congrats on a very nice looking and capable car!

Sidenote: I am a little concerned that you dumped the Z considering I plan on picking one up in the not too distant future... Mind giving me the $0.05 version of why?? If you prefer to PM me instead of posting to the thread that is cool as well.

Thanks!
Jason
Sidenote

Thanks Jason! I appreciate it! That's a great idea for the service manager thing. Although I think with the stink I put up about my car, they ALL know about me... lol.

As for the reasons why I got rid of Zena (my Z), I can elaborate since it's my thread... so going off topic won't get me ridicule :)

I got rid of the Z for one main reason, then the rest followed. Mike above, hinted at it... but I always thought my car was my escape from stress, what I enjoy doing "on my own" so to speak. So getting a 2 seater was no problem for me. I discovered, that as I continue being a father, you start to realize what's really important to you. Your family. Instead of going for a drive, alone, after a stressful day at work, I realize I would rather go on a drive with my wife and son, or just my son if wife is unavailable. That's what really matters. On top of that, we are expecting another little one in May. So I knew Zena had to go... I wasn't enjoying her as much.

2ndly, it was also only feasible since I was able to recoup for trade in what I paid for my Z new... unbelievable right? But yes, it's true... I got a KILLER deal the first time around, and I got another killer deal. I guess I'm just good at haggling. As Mike said, I nag till you give in. LOL.

But I also only vowed to get rid of my Z, only if, I was upgrading to a BETTER car. Otherwise, why bother? So anyways, after a 20 minute test drive (with Mike actually), I came out of going, where do I sign!?!?!?!

The Z was great... but it had it's share of issues... things you don't notice till you live it with it for a year of ownership. The engine and transmission were key for me. The engine is thrashy about 5k rpm. It hurts your ears, and just doesn't sound good. I cringe revving her up. The transmission was noisy... sounding like loose marbles in a can when clutch is pushed in coasting to a stop or leaving a stop. My car had some slight oil consumption, although I was advised that was normal. But it always freaked me out. Lastly, though touted as "fast", it always lacked torque and sport brakes were so so... On the plus side, the Z was quick (relatively), a great handler, and good looks.

The 5.0 was the anti-thesis to all of the above. It was muscular, angry, but smooth.... interior was on par with Z if not better (surprising for Ford... it blew my mind), the engine was SO smooth. Night and day with Z. You wanted to REV this engine... the tranny is quiet and tight and a delight to shift (esp with my MGW shifter). And for a big lady, she handles well, esp with the brembo pkg. And who could forget the power and torque? 412hp (more like 440hp) and 390 ft lbs of torque?!?!?!?! What's NOT to love. I got addicted to torque. It's a delight. A true delight.

So there you have it. Z is a great car... but somewhat impractical for a family guy, which I am now. For christmas, I wanted a car seat for my son!!! I got too antsy and bought one already :D hehe.... just so my son could ride in it.

Sorry for rambling, but hey you asked... :D

Good looking Mustang,
I love the Kona Blue color. :dblthumb2:

Thanks Fred... Kona Blue or bust for me. I think the other color was maybe red candy or black.... but they were FAR from first choice... also the reason why I got a 2012 and not a 2013.

Beautiful! I hope that I have the same experience you have the next time I get a new car. I have taken notes!

Great pictures :)

Every time I get a service at the dealer (I try to do most of it myself) they try to offer me a free was coupon-code to their swirl-o-matic. They are very confused when I refuse them.

Bill!!! Thanks buddy! You have NO idea how many notes I have taken from YOU! So you saying that is truly a compliment. Thank you. Yes, I try to do all my car work myself too... I try not to go to the dealer if I can help it... we'll see about this dealer.

About your swirl o matic comment, that just applies to automatics WITH a swirling brush/cloth machine, right? Otherwise, I go touchless all the time in winter for my daily drivers... no swirls there.

thank you sir! Wow, that's quite a change from a Z! To a Wrangler? Am guessing family too eh???? :D isn't it cool how we progress in life? That's what life's about I guess...

But yes, ordering a car juuuuuuuuust how you like it is the best. I still remember checking all those boxes and options I wanted. I wanted the $60k Shelby... of course.... but a man can dream.

You are probably right but I sure wouldn't take any chances with such a beatiful car... I even asked my Service Manager to make sure only his most cautious and valued tech service my car and in a very nice way let him know that if anything is damaged I would "hope" they would stand behind fixing it...

Sorry for rambling, but hey you asked... :D

That's not ramble thats RUMBLE!! Thanks for taking the time

PS: attached is a sign you can hand from your rear view mirror when you take it in for service... I just came across it on another forum and it sure beats the sheet of paper I used to tape on my dash that said "DO NOT WASH"

Your son will be very thankful that you replaced the 370Z with the 5.0 GT. He is going to love the torque and the feeling of being glued to his car seat. lol

now you need to make up some DO NOT WASH signs and leave them in the car in case you ever go to the dealer for any reason. Put them on the dash once you arrive. I put mine in a plastic protector and leave them in my glovebox.

telling them not to wash it doesn't always work.

Big change yes, but not due to family. I've gained a GF and two cats since I bought the Z but it's really about more room in general for a DD, and also the Z makes it really hard to get off road for the other hobby I picked up after I bought the Z...........photography. The nice thing is the new 2012 is 285hp which puts it just 21 shy of the Z. Of course it will never handle like the Z and will never accelerate like it, but at least I won't feel like I traded a rocket for a snail :xyxthumbs:

edit: I do have plans (in my head at least lol) to maybe in a few years or so pick up another Z or maybe something more high end if money allows.

NICE!!!! I wished I knew about AG when I got my car. They told me they were going give it a wash before I get it. I didn't know better last year. Congrats on your car!! :props:

I bought my car new 14 mo ago and in hindsight I wish I was the addict that I am now. Thanksfully there wasn't too much damage.

too bad it isn't multi lingual.

How do you guys feel about the little plastic/magnetic service cones they put on top of the car? I am assuming they can also scratch. Has anyone had any luck getting a dealer to put a cloth under them or not use them at all?

Thanks guys... That's a brilliant idea about posting up signs that say don't wash car. I might even go further as to write don't TOUCH paint on car, period. LOL.

He's been in the car several times now, before I stored it. I love the part where he said "Daddy go faster!". He's almost 3, and I taught him how to call it "five point oh" :D

sportscarhiatus; what you told the dealer is exactly what I've told to two dealers and what I told a friend of mine to tell his dealer. Sadly, my friend didn't listen to my advice and his 2011 BMW M3 was beyond trashed because of it. Took me over 36 hours to correct the damage the dealership did to that M3. If anyone buys a new car and it has to be ordered. Do exactly was sportscarhiatus did. Be adamant that they don't touch it. No wash, no "detail", no wipe down, NOTHING. Tell them you want the tape left on the car. Sweet car btw! I really like that color blue.

About your swirl o matic comment, that just applies to automatics WITH a swirling brush/cloth machine, right? Otherwise, I go touchless all the time in winter for my daily drivers... no swirls there.

You are correct in the interpretation of my comment. Now be warned that a lot of the chemicals used at some touch-less washes are still powerful to strip off even some of the best waxes and sealants, if you live in a winter prone area that uses salt, sand and calcium sprays I still feel this is your best option during the winter especially to rinse off the undercarriage.

Another thing to check if you have multiple options is asking the operator about the filters they use if they recycle water. A tip passed on to me is to look for a wash using a 2-stage filter.

Now that I have a layer of Opti-Coat I have no fears of the touch-less wash which I will use before doing an ONR wash to get things really clean. IMO winter salt/sand/chemicals are just too much to ask from ONR alone and need some help knocking off the big stuff first.
