What is this on my clay bar??

Well, I bought the car from Birmingham, AL in July, which is prety dang far from any major airports.

According to the FAA:

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, which is located about five miles from Downtown Birmingham, has over 3,000,000 passengers using its facilities for boarding aircraft through its gates yearly.

This doesn't include the Military's flight operations.

You may be correct in stating that The B-SIA is not a major airport. Though I tend to disagree.

IMO...Jet fuel just may have had a chance to contaminate your bought-in- Birmingham vehicle after all. But...Who knows for sure!!

This probably doesnt matter but from what section of the car did it come?

It came from the hood. The rest of the car felt the same way, though I didn't continue since I had to get ready for work.

Yes, came off pretty easily. The paint still cleans up fairly nice, especially for it's age, after a good wash. The car's paint is pretty gritty feeling, and I am assuming that whatever this is is the culprit.

Jetfuel removes easily is why I asked

Doesn't really matter, even if it was close to a private airport, the fuel being burned off (dumped) @ takeoff from a Cessna will cause this

All that matters now is that its gone

Looks a bit like soap scum I pull off the shower blinds every now and again

Got a lot of clay down there?

This is actually kind of interesting (in RE: red clay):

Interesting...I just clayed my car. My clay looked exactly like yours. Also, like yours, it was mostly on the hood, with less everywhere else.

Hey guys,

Finally got around to wanting to detail my DD/project '97 Jetta. Washed her, dried her then started to clay and this is what came off on my clay bar:

Never had the contaminants come off red. Just curious as to what this could be.

Thanks guys.

Feasible...Georgia is known for it's red clay. Thanks for all of the opinions guys. It really wasn't a big deal as long as it was coming off. Curiosity just got the better of me, and I needed to have some sort of clue. :xyxthumbs:

It seems clear to me from what Flash said, that at one time you had a 767 land on the hood of your car. But I know very little about aviation.

Could be from birds eating berries - they are high in fiber....

i would bet its red clay, i highly doubt its jet fuel being dumped from a 767 as jet fuel is a straw colored liquid and not red, some diesel is red but thats rare now its mostly clear......
