Well, I bought the car from Birmingham, AL in July, which is prety dang far from any major airports.

It came from the hood. The rest of the car felt the same way, though I didn't continue since I had to get ready for work.
Yes, came off pretty easily. The paint still cleans up fairly nice, especially for it's age, after a good wash. The car's paint is pretty gritty feeling, and I am assuming that whatever this is is the culprit.

Looks a bit like soap scum I pull off the shower blinds every now and again

Hey guys,
Finally got around to wanting to detail my DD/project '97 Jetta. Washed her, dried her then started to clay and this is what came off on my clay bar:

Never had the contaminants come off red. Just curious as to what this could be.

Interesting...I just clayed my car. My clay looked exactly like yours. Also, like yours, it was mostly on the hood, with less everywhere else.
It seems clear to me from what Flash said, that at one time you had a 767 land on the hood of your car. But I know very little about aviation.
