Lol. Technically, the Dec 2012 date is the end of their Long Count calendar and not the Maya. The Maya kept dates that went beyond that date and this would seem to be useless if the world was to end then. Also, that date is dependent on Sir Thimpson's calculations, which most scholars accept but not all. In other words, the date of Dec 2012 might be off.

By the time the Spaniards arrived the majority of Maya cities had been abandoned, more than likely due to constant warfare, deforestation, but, most importantly, several severe droughts that lasted decades. However, the Maya never really disappeared and there are still about 30 distinct Mayan dialects spoken. A lot of people don't know but 100 years after the arrival of the Spaniards over 90% of the Native American population (Aztec, Maya, Tlaxcalan, etc) had been wiped out mainly from disease.
