Should I trade in my PC for a Megs or GG?

Hello all,

I recently bought a PC7424XP with 5.5" pads from Autogeek. I bought it before doing too much research on polishers or becoming a member on this forum. Now that I am a member, I see that the GG and Meguiars units seem to be more talked about on this forum (Especially the GG). People specifically say that the strength of the GG is that it has more power and will not stop spinning (plus lifetime warranty). But people also say that QC on the GG is not too good and the build quality of the PC is very good. I am still within my 90 day window through Porter Cable where I can return the PC for any reason no questions asked so it is still an option to change up my polisher. I have never fully polished a car. I broke out the PC to do my hood last night and it seemed to stop spinning pretty easily and I always had to watch to see that it was still spinning. This concerned me a little. As a beginner my technique was probably not too good but if the Griots polisher is so hard to stop spinning maybe I should get that? People also say the Griots is smoother with less vibration? I will be using the polisher to polish only about 2 to 3 cars a year and spread wax on several vehicles. It is not my intent to start a flame war over which polisher is better, I'm just looking for some opinions and feedback.

Thanks,
Drew

Just get megs G110V2 and you won't be sorry. Been there done that!:props:

I would just keep it. You said you would only use it on 2-3 vehicles per year. And I know the PCXP has no problem spreading sealants and waxes. Figuring out how much pressure you can apply without having the pad stop rotating takes some practice. There is nothing wrong with the GG 6 inch or Meg's G110v2 the only thing I would see improvement in on this point to less vibration. I have seen where people have gotten one of these two polishers and have problems keeping the pad rotating. Just gotta keep practicing.

Is the quality better than the v1 models. I heard those were pretty spotty. Also, the GG is tempting because of the amps and wattage is superior to the other two.

Neither.

The answer to your concerns = Flex 3401

Pride of ownership in one's car, pride of ownership in one's tools. Those are my irrational $0.02 :awesome:

If I polished more than 2 or 3 cars a year I would consider it but it is a bit much for my needs.

Keep it. I have a PC and it has worked just fine for me.

!00% better. With new cruise control keeps constant speed with any pressure.

I am kinda leaning towards keeping it because

A. I already have it
B. Build Quality
C. Should be more than enough for my needs.

Now your thinking straight. Keep your pc learn how to use it and have fun with it......anyways you ARE a geek now and by late spring you'll HAVE to HAVE another polisher.....and another.....and another......get the pattern here?:buffing:

I would keep it. I love the PCXP and is prolly my most used tool. It works great and hasn't let me down yet!

Keep it.

Later down the road get a more powerful machine and use the PCXP as a backup/small pad machine.

Keep your PC and buy a GG so you have both. Thats what I plan on doing :)

Keep it!! Ive used mine almost more than my rotary this summer and loved it :dblthumb2: Great orb and as you've said 1# already got it. 2# not doing more than light polishing & waxing (more than enough for your needs) I would check out some videos do a little more reading up on products and techniques before returning it? Don't sweat the buyers remorse.. you've made a good choice next buy will be a rotary anyway not another orbital down the road of course but just saying??? :dunno:

There you go ! :xyxthumbs:

I still have my PC7424 (good old regular model not XP) that I bought back in 08. I only do a few cars and bikes a year and it fits my needs perfectly. I'm sure the others may be better but for me it's a great little polisher. I have never had an issue with it and with the right pad/polish it does everything I need.

Given that you can still return it with no consequence, no monetary loss, I'd return it and replace it with a G110v2.

Drew,

I agree with your thoughts.

You have it and have been pleased with its performance so far. If you decide to step it up a bit in the future, the Flex 3401 is one heck of a machine that you will no doubt enjoy.

I have the first generation Porter Cable 7424 and the Flex 3401. Both serve there intended purpose and I'm glad to have both..

Another thought would be adding a rotary if you are at all interested. Rotaries are great machines and are not difficult to master, all it takes is some practice and experience.
