My buffer and goodies arrived today and as long as the weather holds up it appears that Sunday will be the day I detail my mustang. My only question is I turned the buffer to speed 5 and rested it on my hand with a dry pad and it got HOT instantly, it hurt lol Anyways I am a little nervous and don't want to burn my paint. I have watched all of the videos by autogeek and I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. Its not going to burn my paint right?

Only other ? is that I have dual 12" racing stripes (Vinyl) Avoid them at all cost? I have hand waxed them before, Can I orbital buffer them on a low speed?

It got hot because theres no lubircant on it. Thats like polishing paint with no polish.

Turning the polishing on speed 5 and having it rub on your hand is going to make it get hot. It's friction. No need to worry. :xyxthumbs:

Clear coat is a very hard material and won't get that hot with a DA polisher. Remember to use the least aggressive method first and don't be nervous. It is pretty hard to mess up your paint with a DA polisher. I am not sure about the vinyl stripes. I have always wondered about them as well, so I look forward to an answer.

Remember to post some pictures of the results if you can! :props:

Thanks, I understand that it would be hot without polish, but I was a little surprised about what it can do. I will post pictures before and after don't you worry lol. BTW Everyone here is a tremendous help! Thanks a million!

You're welcome! If you have any other questions during the process, you know where to ask! :)

Do we need to keep you away from power tools? J/K .:)

I've got the feeling we'll be seeing you around here on Sunday with an exasperated tone:confused:

Happy detailing :buffing:

And you'll sweat a lot in the process .. LOL.

Sorry to hijack a dead thread but I noticed that my griots came with two replacement brushes for the motor. I have had difficulty finding out any info on them so how often do the brushes wear out? Are they a user serviceable part?

The brushes should last for years and years if you are an occasional user. Yes, they are user-replaceable, that's why they gave them to you.

it will be a long time before they wear out. Just keep them in a safe place

not sure if opening the machine would void the lifetime warranty so if you ever have problems, call Griots first. Then again, why they would give you brushes if they didn't want you to replace them at some point. Anyhow, just check with them first.

avoid those stripes. In fact, tape the edges off so you don't run over them accidentally.

the power and loudness of the GG6 kinda scared me at first too (apparently it is quieter than a pc though). What I did to get the feel of the machine was use it on a washed/clayed hood on speed 4 to apply some glaze or wax with a black pad.

running it at lower speed also may help set/break in the brushes or something. Not too sure but I think I read it somewhere. Anyhow, that was just a side benefit. Using it with a no cut pad and something that doesn't splatter gives you a feel for how to turn on the machine, make passes, apply some pressure, and turn off the switch while leaving the pad on the paint.

Don't forget to mark your backing plate so you can see what kind of movement/uneven pressure makes it stop and just jiggle.

Have fun!

Thanks guys, at the rate i use mine it will be time to upgrade to a flex by the time they wear out :)
