I am getting my "stuff" together and will pull the trigger soon.The vehicle is a daily driver '05 Toyota 4 Runner 160K miles BLACK in color. I am in Ohio so winter abuse is not avoidable.

My goal is to correct the finish, removing swirls and rids, then protect with products that will last a long time and provide great looks.

I have meg clay bar/quick detailer, scratchx and swirlx. I'll probably stick with the clay unless you think i would be better served by another product.

Here is the line up in order that I intend to use them.
  1. Menzerna SIP - Super Intensive Polish (IS 1500) PO 83
  2. Menzerna Super Finish (SF 4500) PO85RD
  3. Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0
  4. Collinite Marque D’Elegance Carnauba Paste Wax #915

...and the new tools
  1. Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher
  2. Dual-Action Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate 5"
  3. Lake Country 5 1/2 Inch Flat Pads 6 Pack
  • Pad 1 : Orange- Polish
  • Pad 2 : Orange
  • Pad 3 : White- Finish
  • Pad 4 : White
  • Pad 5 : Black- Seal
  • Pad 6 : Black- Wax

Did I select the correct pads? I still need to add MF towels.What about pads for the tight spots?

It looks good, but if it was me I would make 1 change. I would add a yellow pad in case you need it. For tight spots you can get a 3" backing plate and Hydrotech pads that will work with a PC. Also, I would reccomend some type of quick detailer, but you could probably just get Meg's locally.

Looks good. +1 on the pads, I would add a tangerine hydrotech pad.
 
Hi Tia,

Most have the impression that the Lake Country Orange pads are very aggressive and the truth is they're not.

Lake Country's orange pad is a light cutting pad. Use this pad with polishes and swirl removers. It’s an all around pad that will work on most light to moderate imperfections. Get yourself a couple of Yellow pads for those occasions when defect removal needs more than just a little cutting.

Menzerna SIP - Super Intensive Polish (IS 1500) PO83 is a relatively aggressive product and you'll wished you had something a bit more suitable for finish other than Menzerna Super Finish (SF 4500) PO85RD...

I've replaced your #2 with something that finishes up much better and substituted Collinite 915 for Collinite 845 as it's a little more user friendly. There's nothing wrong with Collinite 915, it's just harder to work with...

I was indeed debating the difference in SF4000 and SF4500 can you provide any more detail here?

The existing finish is not awful, hence my thought on the orange v yellow pad. I do have a couple of "issues" I will have to deal with IE... scratches I can feel with my finger nail. Is this where the yellow will work better, or will something more abrasive likely be needed? Worst case is I get at it as best I can and live with the deeper scratches no intention of respray.

Should I simply use the more agressive pad/polish on the trouble spots or on the whole car?

Eventually I'll have to do some chip repair, and fix some touch up that the prior owner did. Better to get it know or is later OK?

Just trying to think it out before I get:buffing:

HA, this is the reason I'm less than fond of acronyms..


Take a look at the chart and see where your selections fall. This will help you understand why I've recommend PO106FA over PO85RD.....it's in the cut..

I would drop the porter cable and go with the griots da. Nice lifetime warranty and more power

Based upon my experience, this is spot on. I find myself using the orange pads much more than I initially thought I would. An orange LC pad is my default pad when using XMT360. I've achieved very good results with the combo.
