This car belongs to a friend of mine. He has had it for years and I've polished it out for him before. Unfortunately, it has seen a lot of auto car washes and the scratches from the brushes were on every panel. I tried doing a short video walk around examination both before and after, but I'm not happy the way they turned out. I probably won't be doing it again. The before especially shows absolutely none of the scratches, just the washed out lights. Oh well, live and learn.
The other thing I did with this car was to log the time spent on each step to give an idea how long things take (me).

Here is the car as it arrived to me:

There were a couple of areas in dire need of some serious attention:

First up as always was the wheels, barrels, wells and tires.

First the wheels get treated to IronX. I ran out of my bottle on the 3rd wheel and tried my new Wolf`s Decon Gel. No discernible difference to me.

The wheels were followed up with Zep Citrus on the face and barrels as well as the wells. The tires were cleaned with Zep Purple. Tarminator was used where needed as well.
The car was then foamed with a strong mix of DG901 and Dawn to remove any wax.

That was followed by a hand wash of the same mix of 901 and Dawn. The car was then brought inside wet to clay with Elastofoam and ONR as lube. It was dried off completely after.

This is when I shot the first walk around inspection video. I guess it`s better than nothing; skip it if you figure it`s wasting your time:

Now, at this point I had 3 hours into the car already. Next up was the wheels. I spent 1.25 hours hand polishing them with D300 and a mf and then wiping them down with ERASER and coating them with OG. You can see how much OG I used just on the wheels alone:

Paint Correction:

For such a big car, I was really hoping I`d be able to bang off a 2 step process on it. No such luck. This is what I tried first on the hood:
M105 + yellow B/S pad
M105 + black TB wool
ended up using FG500 + TB black wool. That got the scratches out, but it was not pretty to look at. I followed that up with M105 and yellow B/S which made it beautiful and then the crowning glory was M205 and a white B/S pad. I also tried the DG paint cleaner on several panels using a red LCC pad and my Megs DA at speed 4. The more I use it, the more I like it. Here's the hood taped up and ready for the winning combo to be found:

Here's two 50/50 shots:

Once the polishing was done, then I attended to all the paint chips and scuffs. I used either a pointy toothpick or the mini brushes I get off ebay.

Between 3 stages of polishing and touch ups, I spent 12 hours on this stage alone!

A few of the doors had been painted, and there was a mess of a lot of the seams. I cleaned them up as well as I could, but it was frustrating to see.

The paint and glass area was then sealed in with OG. That process (including cleaning prep) took 2 hours. You can see how much OG I ended up using on the whole car:

The trim that was badly scuffed was treated with a few different things to try to abate its ugliness. I tried Solution Finish and then went over that with Black again trim dye. All the trim was then dressed with DG flat black trim dressing.

The tires were sprayed with DP gel via my spray gun.

Interior:

The carpeting including mats were vacuumed and steam cleaned. The wood was polished with DG 501. The leather was cleaned with OPC and then treated to UIGP and wiped down afterward. Glass was cleaned with Zep Glass cleaner. Perl was used on the rest of the interior. Both the mats and the carpeting was treated with 303 FG to protect it.

So, grand total for this car was over 20 hours! Here's the final inspection video, also shot with my iphone:

Boy, was I happy to have this thing done, but I was very proud of how it came out. Please join me now for the

Great Job, one of my favorite cars too. I love German cars from the late 1990s and early 2000.

Amazing work as usual. Great Job Richy

:iagree: The late model E38s and E39s are easily the best looking 7 and 5 series, respectively...at least IMO.

Great work as usual, Richy. :dblthumb2:

Thank you brlukosk. It's funny you mention the car oozes class, as my friend is a very classy guy and I always thought the car suited him well. Now more than ever, LOL.

Fantastic work Richy. Nice detailed write up as well.
Thank you rider9195. Be honest. What did you think of the walk around videos? A waste of time or not?

Thanks Bigbull2984. I agree with you. I was never fond of the whole "Bengel-butt" era. They have cleaned up the design since then.

Thank you fahoumh for the very kind words.

Amazing work. That Bimmer look flawless in the after shots. I hope your friend buys you a few good cigars for 20 hours worth of work!

I love seeing your write-ups, Richy! Such professional work! :props:

Why did you go with FG500 over M105?

Awesome job!!! Hard work and patience pays off in a huge way!!!

Thank you.

Thanks! I was actually puffing on one when he came to get it, so he smoked a few cigarettes while I finished my cigar.

Thanks my friend. Good question. The FG with wool left marks that I did not feel comfortable leaving to just m205. Besides, after M105 and yellow, M205 with white jewels it really nice. I have tried 85rd after with no noticeable difference, it finishes down that well. With wool, you pretty much have to do 3 steps.

Thank you. I was to the point that I was happy to see it leave though, LOL.

Seriously amazing work their richy! Thanks for sharing this.
My pleasure and thank you!

Beautiful job Richy !!!!
Thanks Pat, I appreciate the kind words!

Better than show room bimmers!

How would you compare it to the E65 you did a couple of weeks ago? Softer or harder coat?

I'd say they were pretty comparable b/c I had to use wool to correct it in many places too, but it had seen more hand washing and less auto washes, so it was not as bad for that. The scratches in the newer one were deeper and difficult to remove. This older one has straight black whereas the other was metallic, so the straight black has to be perfect as it shows every single thing! I have heard people say that the straight black paint was soft, but not this one, that's for sure.
