Tick Marks Pinholes or Solvent Popping?

An ulmost perfect finish but I have this little ticks I guess you can call them.
I have seen the word used on a different post and they seemed describe these little imperfections left after a polishing session and wax.

How come I have them and how can i get rid of them ?

Re: Ticks

Do they look almost like tiny holes in the clear coat?? A couple of us had a discussion about what I'm describing earlier...were they there when you started or did they seem to appear after you got done polishing?

Yes and when I finished

Re: Ticks

Let me find that thread...they say you can't get rid of them without repainting...just a sec

Cee dee wrote in his review of hybrid pads that a pad finished without ticks, so my finish had them, so I am thinking it is a pad issue not pitting.

If Cee Dee said it, it must be a fact

You will need to sand out those tic marks if you want to get rid of them ;)

Not ticks

Oops just read Mike Phillips definition of tick marks.
Not what I have. Mine inperfection is more like little dots... just a few of them.

They are described here,

The difference between Rotary Buffer Swirls, Cobweb Swirls, Micro-Marring, DA Haze & Tick Marks

Tick Marks, also called DA Haze or Micro-marring is usually the cause of something in your process scratching the paint. If the scratches are uniform then it's likely the abrasive or the pad. If they are not uniform, then it could be contaminants that have entered into the process or spent product build-up.

Most of the time it's going to be the abrasive followed by the pad.

The key to a perfect finish relies heavily on the abrasive technology.

Since you're using some of the best abrasive technology available, my guess is it's the pad and my second guess is part of the problem is the paint.

Are you working on you black BMW?

Switch to a softer pad, perhaps an open cell pad. Do a Test Spot using a tape-line so you can clearly see if you're making improvements when changing pad or product.

Once you dial in a system that produces a tick-mark free finish you'll have the recipe for success.

The test panels I have here at work are painted using PPG paints and I would put them in the medium to soft range for paint hardness. I'm able to finish out defect free using just about any soft finishing pad with Menzerna polishes.

Yep black.

Test panel may not help as it only happened a couple spots...
Finished up with a blue pad and Menz po84rd

If i can take a photo I will...
thanks

If they are "dots" that means they are likely pin holes or what's called solvent popping.

Regardless, they are like hole going "into" your paint.

Read and understand the meaning of "into" in the above sentence. If in fact these are ANY type of defect that is like a hole or tunnel going down into or through the layer of paint, then abrading the surface more and more will not tend to remove them, just remove more precious paint.

Look at this picture, do they look like this?

Proof You Can Do It! - Joe The Detailer - Black Porsche Turned into Black Pearl!

See the tiny "dots" on the right side after the paint was polished? Is this what you're seeing?

Re: Ticks

Yes the tiny dots on the top photo.

The "dots" in the other two photos are the same dots, it's just the camera is not as close to the paint.

I've seen these holes or divots in paint after machine polishing all my life. Not sure what causes them in a factory paint job because solvent popping is normally something that takes place to body shop work, not assembly line work and I've seen this on all types of paint.

I think abrading and abrading more and more paint off the car to try to remove them can be risky. Might be better to love the results you created and learn to leave with tiny little defects like these.

Yes, I see them and I definetly have them.. Got to love that BMW paint.
Oh well at least the outside is better than the inside. The painted surfaces of the trim around console, arm rest and other inside trim parts has pretty much worn off.. BMW forum guys say " hey this is a performance car not a beauty car' ok whatever.....

Pitting on the front is obviously from the road, but when it's on the trunk, roof, or even high sides panels it's a bit odd....I've often wondered if it's pitting from dust/sand/debris during a wind storm or even tornado??? :dunno:

Re: Ticks

That is the same thing I had on a black Lexus IS250. This car had something else if anyone might be able to answer this...It had for lack of a better word craters in the paint. They were about 3/8" in diameter and looked like craters. There was a visible edge. They still shined and didn't go through the clear coat. I didn't want to try and take them out and end up in the color coat. Sorry no pic...it's my son's car so I can try and get some. Any ideas??

If you locate a problem to just the front of the car then you can narrow the problem down to debris or dirt or sand hitting the front when driving at high speeds.

When you see the problem in other areas then it means there must be some other cause.

I lived and drove in the Mojave Desert. I've driven a black car at 70+ mph from Apple Valley, California to Las Vegas and hit sand storms, so I know what it looks like and sounds like when the sand is hitting the front of your car.

I've also worked on a lot of cars driven the same way just due to working on so many cars at Meguiar's in SoCal for years.

That all said, I've seen a lot of this problem and most of it is focused to the front hood meaning impact defects from whatever's in the air.

Were they isolated to just the front hood or front clip of the car?

If so, you could have been following something hauling a caustic or corrosive liquid that was spraying out and hitting all the cars behind it.

I don't mean it was purposefully spraying something out but if you were in a truck hauling contaminated "stuff", the wind would catch the liquid and send it airborne and it would fly off or or out of the truck and hit whatever was following it.

Could happen in the rain even, something spilled on the freeway, the cars in front of you spraying road splatter onto your car. There's a contaminant in the splatter.

:dunno:
