Hyundai, Kia inflated fuel economy claims on 900,000 cars, EPA says - latimes.com

Very interesting, and I don't recall this sort of compensation ever happening before.

Some of the owners no doubt purchased the Hyundai or Kia over another brand in large part due to the (inflated) better mileage. Compensation for lower mileage doesn't help that, so the payments are a small price for Hyundai/Kia to pay for increasing market share. Some would call it clever, some would call it sleazy, and some will say it was just an innocent mistake.

Imagine if we had Chinese made cars brought to the U.S. Would Anyone buy one? I certainly would not.

I cringe when ever i see anything made in china. Especially the american flag.

Interesting, they were part of the debacle in the late 90's over misleading horsepower ratings. Seems maybe they learned something from that or not?

Dagnabbit!!

I wish I would have known of this a little earlier...
I set mine down by the curb yesterday for trash pick-up day!!

Korean car manufacturers thread switches over to China thread but what I want to know is if nobody buys things made in China, how WalMart is making so much money!

Didn't Honda or Toyota just get sued (and lose) for a similar mpg issue with their hybrids? At least Hyundai and Kia are stepping up and willingly doing something.

I am on vaca in Pheonix and Rented a KIA. The car says I'm getting around 40 mpg but after 70 miles I'm down a quarter tank...I'm a little pisted!

Honda did. But the plaintiff lost on appeal. Also this case is quite a bit different.
The claim in the lawsuit was that the Civic Hybrid didn't get the EPA estimate in real world driving, which we all know can vary depending on how the car is driven.
In the case with Hyundai/Kia, the EPA couldn't get the cars to meet the EPA estimates that the manufacturer provided.
Autoblog has a chart with the revised estimates, the Kia Soul lost 6 mpg hwy on some trims.

The Elantra is now rated at 37 mpg hwy. Not good considering how hard Hyundai marketed it's 40 mpg claim.

most all car manufacturers say little or big white lies to sell you a car. who's next...

+1. Anxious to know if my 2012 Sport Santa Fe is among the fake fuel efficiency claims

What is the big deal? We've know this issue for a long time. All manufacturers in my opinion lie about mpg. I have an '06 toyota tundra, the sticker claimed I would get 16 city and 18 hwy. What do I get? A lousy 11 city and 13 hwy. The same issue with an 05 Sienna my wife had and the same issue an 04 Accord I had. Overrated MPG.

It is not a surprise that a car doesn't match it's EPA rating in real world driving. Conditions and driving habits are completely different. In Hyundai's case, the cars couldn't get their EPA rating in the EPA test. Could be a mistake, could be fraud, or maybe performance varies that much from car to car.

Kia soul 6 MPG to me is the sad one. This is one that very young adults will buy and money for them is probably tight.

I like it very much. Previously I had a 2008 Sata Fe without any issue.
