Any suggestions on how to correct this? Happened Saturday night on my wife's brand new Escape. There's a little chipping in the paint, with an odd point of contact where said egg hit. I'm not happy.

I am sure you will recieve several good responses but if the paint is chipped or cracked, and it looks like it is cracked, you may have no other option but to have it refinished. Some light color sanding and polishing may minimize the appearance and remove some of the more minor surface scratches.

HOLY COW!

The car I bought in December had the EXACT same marking. I could not figure out for the life of me what could have done it. Now I know!

I am still wondering the best way to fix this. Wetsand or a paint chip repair kit. What are your plans?

I tried polishing out with my Megs MF system cutting pad and it made it less noticeable, but did not fix it.

That's called

Egg Imprint Chips

I have an article on this...

Imprint Chips - Chips in the paint caused by a thrown egg

I've fixed this on my own truck years ago using touch-up paint followed by wetsanding and then buffing out my sanding marks. It's very time consuming and if you're not super careful you'll just make things worse.

The damage shown in your pictures is some of the worst looking Egg Imprint Chips I've ever seen.

Take a look at the Dr. Color Chip product line or get an estimate from a good body shop with the body shop route being your best bet for long term customer satisfaction.

Just tell them not to wetsand, cut and buff the paint after they're done painting unless the guy doing the sanding and buffing is a member of AGO. Other wise you'll be removing holograms.

Sorry to see this happened to you...

:dunno:

Call your insurance company - should be only your deductible ($100?) for this type of thing.

Thanks guys. I'm probably going to do a Dr. Colorchip for this. I purchased one for my vehicle last year with decent results, so...

So thats what causes that mark.

If you have the idea of the body shop fixing the problem and you want to see what you can do to fix it thats great. You cant make it worse as the body shop will fix the door anyhow.

I would use the Dr. Colorchip as well if I was in your situation.

:iagree:

I do applaud your initiative and do it yourself philosophy but this is a brand new car, I feel it's best to have a paint shop look at this and fix it right the first time making it new again...

This really stinks but I'm amazed at how a raw egg did that amount of damage to factory paint!

Did they fire the egg using a potato gun?

I don't know if said egg was fired.

I do know that if my son wasn't in the car with me, it would have not been good for the shooters. I don't do well with the damaging of people's property, especially vehicles.

I may still get a quote from a shop for the repair. Anyone know a good shop in South Jersey? I HATE body shops.

I'm right there with you! I catch someone damaging my property and their day's going to go south in a hurry....:bat:

I would take it back to the dealer and chat with them. Since you just bought the car they'll want to be sure your taken care of so you'll be a repeat customer. At least listen to what they have to say...

I would not get the insurance company involved with this. Once you file a claim and pay the deductable this goes on the Carfax report. If that dosent bother you then its fine or just pay a body shop out of pocket.

Carfax report is fine as long as you document the fix and present to next owner, no big deal really, in fact I'd rather that happen than a supposed "clean carfax"...those scare me more, something probably hidden then...just my opinion.

Is there ANYTHING you haven't covered with regards to damaged or neglected paint finishes??

Kids have no respect or idea how some (most) people take pride with what they own.

That is just wrong. You should talk to your insurance before doing anything, it doesn't cost anything to talk to them.

Horrible situation, but thanks for posting it up, I learned something.

I can check with my buddy Lenny House, he might know a good body shop. He's a pro detailer and been through my class and knows the difference between a good shop and a not good shop.

That's a great idea...IIRC he was the fellow that stopped by when Rod Kraft was running a class at PAL Automotive? If so, he should be the man.
