Heavy Swirls/Mineral Deposits, what do you recommend?

Hi ski,

Thank you for all the assistance here and via PM, you've been most helpful.

It's on the way!

Griots Orbital, 9 pads, 5.5 backing plate, and Optimum Compound/Polish.

Let's just hope it's as user friendly as it's been stated. 8)

Thanks for the help all!

One last question before I order:

I see the Wolfgang Swirl Remover states that it is designed (more or less) for Ceramic Clear Coats, which my car does not have. Will using it damage my clear?

What user friendly, well respected products would be good to use if the Wolfgang Twins are not ideal?

I can't seem to find my UC and UP.

The WGSR shouldn't hurt your clear. It's just that it has strong enough cut to work with ceramic clear. By using the SOFTEST pad possible to get the job done you should be able to get the results you're looking for.

You're in VA right?
Check ORielly Auto Parts for the UC and UP. Most stores have it in stock. ;) (Not the cheapest place though and they like NEVER have coupons.) :( Advance Auto Parts has the compound, but for some freaky reason not the polish. :dunno: They do carry 105 and 205 also, just not in all the stores. If you're interested... the 205 works great after UC. :xyxthumbs: They also have a decent selection of Griot's products, and have even added the 6" V3 and the 3", along with some 'kits'. (PLUS They ALWAYS have 15% to 20% off coupons as well, just order online and pickup in the store.) Like now, 15% off $100, free shipping, PLUS another $50 off your next $100. That's over 32% off $200, not bad at all! ;)

Hmmmm.... I'm thinking I might just need to order that 3" after all.

Fantastic news William! You're really going to like it. :D
Betcha' get the hang of it in no time. (Insert the sound from the Staples "That Was Easy" button here.)
Just look at it all as a practice project. If the first practice doesn't work, then try try again. Good workout to keep the old bones flexible too. :)

we want to see some good 50/50 pics and some before and after shots tooo:Picture::Picture:

Congrats!! I think you'll be amazed at how easily you pick this up and get great results.

Well, welcome to AGO. I am in Virginia Beach and have my own detailing business. Would love to be able to help you out with this. Wish I would have seen this thread sooner to let you try out some polishers and products before your purchase. Either way hit me up if you want some hands on assistance with you products when they arrive.
Shaun :)

If you want to correct by hand you need to read up on wet sanding and have arms like Popeye!

Hi William.

Looks like you have a pretty nice Lincoln there. Looks like you're well on your way to getting what you need to get your paint straightened out too.:xyxthumbs:

Yesterday as I was drinking my morning coffee I was writing a somewhat lengthy reply highlighting some more polishing related thoughts and experiences when the power here went out, causing the loss of everything that I had typed. I was more than a bit bent out of shape when that happened. Having to get to work, I gave up. My intentions were there to pitch in and contribute a little more to your thread.

Looks like you're in good hands with some nice equipment and reasonably safe and easy to work with products coming to you.

Above all else...have fun turning that already beautiful car into a head turner. :Picture:

Hi all,

Shaun, sending you a PM shortly, I greatly appreciate your offering of services. :D

First off, thank you all so much for the assistance. Didn't have too much daylight to work with, but with the hour or so I did have, I went to work. All I can say is WOW.

I mean, for my first time, going off of what I have seen in Mr. Phillips videos, I am very proud of my work thus far. It is so incredibly easy to do this (albeit time consuming - but totally worth it!) I am so glad I "took the leap" and bought the stuff.

Here are a few sort of poor before and afters of the 1 pass I did make on each section (roof, and trunk). Pics do not do it justice, 90+% of all the scratches are gone, and 100% of the mineral etchings and oxidation. Woo hoo!

Question now is......

Now that certain areas have tens of thousands of less scratches, some RIDS remain. I've read the warnings about not trying to remove them all (as you'll take the clear with it), but I think a product a bit more aggressive than Optimum Compound II would remove a good deal of them.

What would you folks recommend as a product that is somewhat more aggressive, but still fairly user friendly?

Or would it be best I just leave it be, because I'm very, very satisfied with my current results.

William it is FANFREAKINTASTIC to see your new work! :) Told ya' you'd be glad you did.:dblthumb2: This car polishing stuff is sorta' fun huh? ;)

The before and after reminds me of my kids 4Runner I did a week or so back. It hadn't been done ever, and it's a 98. For 15 year old paint it looks awesome, (actually it looks awesome for NEW paint, but you'd never figure it was that old by looking at it. ;)

Lemee ask you this RE the OC II, did you try side by side tests with your most agressive pad and the one you used? (Or did you end up using the most agressive one you had?)

Did you end up not getting the WG twins? Seems I remember you talking about them earlier, but you did the car with OC II right?

Really no matter, as if you feel you need a bit more correction (and your pads are the constant part here) then yes, you'll need a bit more cutting. Those old Lincolns had more paint on them than the new stuff these days, and probably (as you've said before was never corrected before, so you likely need not worry about about cutting through the clear (completely) this time around.

Can try a few things here.
1: Grab a couple of Microfiber pads and try the OC II with them. (Or the WG for sure.)
2: You said you had some Megs UC? Grab that and give it a try.
3: Ask Shaun if he has a little Megs 101 you can borrow. I can tell you, you WILL like it! :dblthumb2:

I would say buy a bottle, although it certainly isn't cheap, but you'll end up wanting to do everything you own with it! REALLY!!! (Plus you can pay Shaun back after you get yours) heheeheheeee

And while you're at it.... might as well top that with either a new bottle of 205. :D
Or.... can't remember, but if you have the Megs Ultimate Polish that'll work great too. (Honestly I guess what you're really looking for is more compound cut, likely your OP, UP, or WG will be more than up to the task of getting ready for LSP.)

BTW, that is a darned good first run there William. And, at the end of the day, the ONLY person you need to please is yourself. It is so very easy to get OCD once you start seeing just how good the results can be. As Michael Stoops over on MOL says: "Remember, this hobby is supposed to be your therapy, not the reason you need therapy." Im the MAN

Take another try with the compound. I found that some spots may need one more pass (4 medium pressure/4 no pressure on the DA) to get them out.

Hi all,

Been quite busy, haven't had a ton of time for compounding, but here is one more Before and After... (well, After/Before, I guess).

You can see on the left how much more detail has been restored to the tree branches and bush leaves, compared to the right side of the hood.

I'm really impressed, there are still some swirls left (likely just need more passes, or a more aggressive polish) but all the clarity has been restored to the paint, and I couldn't be happier with that. For a while, I was beginning to fear the clear was failing, as that's how it started on my '94.

I still need to do the lower panels, and bumpers, then polish, seal, and wax, but here is how it sits now:

Great job William! :dblthumb2:

Now that 2-tone GMC is getting jealous.

Later,

Cardaddy

Great stuff man. It makes all the time worth it when you see the results.
