Hello all!

So due to a bit of annoyance of random youtube reviews comparing two products side by side, which some lack a lot of control and are biased. I decided to start a segment on here that compares two products on a consistent, side by side, on an even playing field to compare products.

I am really striving for equal and unbaised trials, product control, but mostly following manufacturer directions.

So I am testing CG Diablo and Sonax Wheel Cleaner Full Effect on my Mercedes. Both claim to be powerful, pH neutral cleaners for all wheel surfaces.

So due to the fact the car naturally dusts up a lot, I have been searching for a good wheel cleaner. I have tried Sonax and Diablo on the front wheels only (front wheels dust up more and because both the left and the right brake equally, they dust up the same).

Both product will be applied dry as per manufacturer directions. Sonax at full strength and Diablo at 1:4. Both will be allowed to dwell for 5 minutes

Now I did not agitate the wheels because it really negates the purpose of this test. With agitation, plain shampoo with do the same job in this case. For this reason, I simply pressure washed them off thoroughly.

VERDICT!:

Overall, the pictures speak for themselves. The Sonax cleaned better. It cleaned the barrel and callipers better than the Diablo. Although, I was shocked at how well the Diablo cleaned considering you cannot "see" it working. In this case though, I will actually give my vote to the Diablo for a few reasons.

1. It is more gentle than the Sonax, yet has similar cleaning results. If you have a pair of high end or sensitive rims, I would argue this is the better choice.

2. Diablo is a lot cheaper, 16oz of diluted product (1:4) is $4.25 working out to $0.27/oz. Sonax is $16 for 16.9oz of product equalling $0.95/oz

3. As most of us do, we all agitate our rims with an array of brushes and tools to thoroughly clean them. Factor that agitation will make these products equally effective at cleaning, Diablo is the better all round product because it is cheaper, more gentle, and smells better LOL.

Thanks for reading and please let me know if there are any products that you would like to see tested!

Even with agitation, Sonax will definitely clean baked on brake dust better.

Thanks for the review. Nicely done.

I have chosen Wolfgang Über wheel cleaner as it is more attractively priced. That and I'm a nut for the iron bleeding effect.

Interesting take on a wheel cleaner review, I don't think I've seen too many (if any) without agitation. My only question about the review is the comparison itself. Is it just marketing or is Sonax Full Effect a truly different kind of wheel cleaner with the de-ironizing effect it has? I always felt Sonax FE was in a separate league compared to most wheel cleaners and the only other alternatives to it being the Wolfgang cleaner (same 'bleeding') and IronX/Trix. I'm not trying to nullify the review in any way, just thinking out loud.

I've got plenty of comparison suggestions! Personally would like to see the same type of review between CG Sticky Gel and CG Diablo. Also an APC test with products with relative dilution ratios, such as 3D APC/Meg's APC+/CG All Clean+/etc... Also, Amazing Roll Off vs Tuff Shine tire cleaner is something I've been curious about, along with Four Star UPP vs Menzerna Powerlock and any kind of tire/trim/rubber gel comparisons.

Thanks for the great review! I already have Sonax FE but it is kinda pricy, I may have to try the Diablo and save a few dollars.

BTW: I do believe you have the right/left wheels mixed up, or is that just a Canadian thing

I have both and it's nice to have both. I use Diablo as my go to cleaner. But for customers that stick around while I detail, it's always fun to pull out the SFE ;) As mentioned by the OP, with agitation, they generally garner the same results anyway.

I'm almost done using up my CG Diablo, and will be trying Wolf's Decon gel next. The Diablo always required agitation afterwards, and heavy, baked-on grime required a couple sessions of letting it sit then agitating vigorously. Same case at even 1:2 dilution.

I've found that Diablo at 2 or 3:1 is perfect for my regular clients or vehicles with maintained wheels. For the caked on grime I go to CG Citrus Sticky wheel cleaner @ 2:1. It requires agitation of course.. But works very well.

Diablo won't strip any type of wax, sealant, or coating, whereas sonax will, correct?

I will test that!

The sent of Diablo got me hooked on it. As you stated, they seem to both be equal in strength if you scrub the wheels before rinsing. In terms of cost, Diablo seems to be a winner.

You'll really like the Wolf's. It is a very solid product and produces results that are on par with sonax/iron-x. Nice thing is, you get 1000ml for $20 - which is better value than both sonax and iron-x. I have not had the opportunity to try Diablo yet.

My top wheel cleaners are..

Iron-X/Wolf's Decon Gel
Brown Royal
Sonax

Very nice review, Andrew.

This is how Sonax FE should be reviewed and compared. I've been asking for a review like this (no agitation) a long time ago but I never saw one. This is definitely helpful for people thinking about buying Sonax FE.

I thought the CG Diablo was supposed to be mixed 3:1 and not 4:1? I mean you can do what you wanna do based on your needs but most go 3:1.

I have been using Wolfgang Über but I think it's a little too much for my weekly washes so I just ordered some Chemical Guys Diablo and Sticky wheel cleaner to try and compare.
I think they'll be better (gentler and easier on the wallet) for my weekly washes.
