Government ramming internet sales tax

Being that we have to be politically fair with everything we do or say anymore as we do not want to hurt anyone's feelings just to make the internet tax fair we all have to pay shipping on anything bought locally. If we are charged shipping for buying on the internet it would only be fair to pay this fee for everything and level the playing field. Opening the can of worms here.

This country, and our governments seems to never fail to astound lately.

Let's say I go on ebay, I spy a used Marantz Reciever from the 70's. I win the auction. Now, I'm going to pay my state taxes on it? It's 40 years old!

How many times is someone going to pay taxes on the same used goods?

Isn't it bad enough to be triple taxed already?

That's right, taxed when you earn it, taxed when you bank it, and taxed when you spend it.

I do find it very unreasonable for small businesses to be responsible for learning tax code for various states and localities. Small businesses shouldn't be exempt, but they should just charge their state tax and keep it for their state. Just like if I drive down to FL and pay Max for some stuff, why does UPS change anything?

It seems everyone wants to be exempt for some reason. This is why the tax code is full of holes for every special interest group. I think a seller either charges the local sales tax or the buyer's state sales tax but it should charge one or the other.

Yep, the tax code needs some super serious simplification.

This tax would be on those businesses making 1M+ in revenue. Also, each state needs to prove the business with the tax table for that state. This must be provided for free. If a business collects the tax and remits it to the state as the state has said it should, than that business is not liable for any mistakes that the state made in their tax database.

As others have said, in most states you're supposed to pay the sales tax for the things you buy online. In IL it's called a "use tax". This is supposed to shift the burden off of the individual tax payer and onto the businesses instead. It's a way for states who are going broke to get the money they feel is due to them.

I personally feel that the internet does hurt small business. Alot of on line retailers have huge distribution facilities out in the middle of nowhere, where taxes are cheap to reduce cost. Plus they sell alot of product so they can sell it for less since they are selling it in mass quantities.

When I bought my mytee extractor online I found it for $145 dollars less than my local distributer, plus I didnt pay a sales tax on it......$1065 sale x 7% tax=$72 more in savings. However my local distributer provides personal customer service, help with the product, expert tips on using it and they will service it for free for a period of time.

However I saved over 200 dollars by ordering it online, which is ALOT of money!

Socialism is expensive.

I really dont understand when people yell socialism. Are you saying our government is socialist?

Because EVERYTHING is socialism then.......

Lets think about it,

I dont have a car why do I have to pay for roads?

I dont call the fire department why do I have to pay for firefighters?

I have a gun why do I have to pay for the police department?

I dont goto the library why do my taxes pay for that?

I refuse to fly, why are my taxes paying for the airport?

I dont have kids why do I have to pay for property taxes which 70% goes to funding schools?

I dont agree with war why do my taxes pay for the military?

I dont use the sidewalk why do i have to pay for someone elses sidewalk.

I grow my own food why are my taxes paying for food inspectors?

The whole point of taxes is to make our society a better, safer place. We have clean air, safe drinking water, a safe food system, an awesome transportation system, and one of the best medical systems in the world.

Do you really want a pay for service society where everything is privatized, driven by profit?

think about it........

I only window shop for big companies like Best Buy... I go ask about what I want, see and test it out. Then I go buy it online... Like Ebay or Amazon.

This local paint detail shop was selling me a kit don't even know the name of the buffer. I Asked a few questions and then i bought my PC off AG. The shipping cost was a lot, but I got credited that... For my next purchase. (Didnt know about free shipping)

So it might be hard on businesses but it shouldn't be a burden on the customer either. If it helps out the business then i don't mind paying a little more or being taxed for it. If it's quality...

I found out that my local Thai restaurant delivered. So I ordered. It took them 15 mins longer then they said it would. The lady said she just came on her own cos her worker didn't show up. I didnt mind at all. So i gave her an extra big fat tip. She got an "A" for effort.

Businesses have to compete too

I live in Oregon so I'm not affected currently. If I was taxed I wouldn't be too happy though, even if it's fair it's still got that sting to it!

However one thing I don't get is when people say the internet is hurting businesses ?

Well didn't the invention of the wheel hurt the sales of say horses because instead of 15 people needing 15 horses they could get two horses to pull a cart full of people.

So a new invention comes out that is transforming how we buy stuff, making the market more available to everyone everywhere, I say the heck with local retailers, they don't exactly treat their employees great, and most of the benefits go to CEOs and upper management, it's not like society is benefiting a whole lot from them.

True look at us someone invented the internet and here we are chatting miles away. If it's hurting their business then improve it... It's not my job to improve your job.

As an Oregon resident this internet tax law will cause a form of double taxation. We do not have sales tax but we pay a 9% income tax at the end of the year. Now we might have to pay a sales tax (on internet purchases) AND an income tax. If you live in a state that already has sales tax, the internet tax will likely be in place of your current sales tax, not added to it.

Our politicians care nothing about the people of this country. All they care about is generating more tax revenue to fund more and more government spending. Find ways to barter products with people and keep the government out of your world as much as possible. Then, vote your senator out of office every chance you get. Citizen imposed term limits is our best chance of having "the people" actually represented in Washington.
