I have been here in Florida now for 3 years. One year has been spent learning to detail here and there. Besides having a garage and or a canopy how do you all beat this heat in Florida? Especially the Mobile Detailers. Do you have any tips our tricks? I'm originally a Jersey man and love the cold so this heat is exhausting.

Check out Missions Enduracool Cooling Towel

They sell it at lowes, pretty nifty invention :)

Depends on how much money you have ie; AC the garage.

It's a tough challenge. I grew up in FL you will get more use to it over time. Obvious things are drink lots of water, use fans, work early in the morning late in the evening, take plenty of breaks, use those cooling bandanas (Lowes), wear light loose clothing, wear a hat, use sun screen, OR move back to NJ!

I've seen those towels. I wasn't sure if these towels were a gimmick or what. Might try it out now.

I don't have that kind of money. But, it's a rental anyway. If i ever did get my home AC would be #1! I guess the towel and keeping hydrated is about it. Although going back to NJ would be great lol

Here in Cali we have more of a dry heat so water helps. It should help you too.
I get my clients water and hose down my work area, my feet, shorts and my arms. I do this every hour or so. It's a great relief and makes your work day a little better.
I have that towel and that works when you do the interior.
Also I back my van right up close to the car I'm working on connect my awnings and stay in the shade as much as possible.

I've live in Florida for nearly 27 years, born and raised, and I still hate the summer heat. I love the short (but sweet) cool winter months we get. You'll catch me washing my car in short sleeves and shorts in 50 degree weather, lol.

As for beating the heat... I say just learn to accept it, because it won't let up until maybe October.

Fla weather sucks lived there 18yrs, sweat just walking to your car...agree with comments above water down your body especially back of your neck and if you can try and book your details earlier In the mornings

I recently moved to North Carolina from Kansas and the humidity is certainly something else. It's probably not as bad as Florida but it's pretty bad compared to KS.

I've got my first full detail soon that I'm going to try out (new at this) and I'll be starting at 5AM just to avoid the sun as much as possible. I might have to try those cooling towels. I already use moisture wicking shirts and I find they help a lot, too.

Turn with the sun - it works :) If starting early, you should be able to get the tops of the vehicle compounded and polished. Use the middle of the day to do the sides. If need be, move the vehicle where needed - that extra 5 minutes is worth it when you can polish on an 85 degree surface rather than a 190 degree surface :dblthumb2:

Loosing 55 lbs of fat really helped me beat the heat in general. With all the fat I'd sweat outside even in the snow , although I'm lucky in that I do most of my detailing in the a/c.

Lots and lots of Gatorade/water. Unless as mentioned you have access to a garage with AC. I also wear the UA heat gear. Keeps me cool. And I make sure I wear a hat if I'm in direct sunlight (rare) - I also take breaks. Usually 5 minutes for every 60 minutes of work.

I see a fatal flaw there bud.... cocked-n-locked that is. :) I learned to put my blade in my left pocket when I'm carrying, along with my extra mag. ;) Can't pull the .45 and the blade all with the same hand.

I didn't lose as much as you, but at my heaviest I was around 187 ±2 lbs wearing a 36" jean. Now I'm more like 167 ±2.5 wearing a 33" waist. (And still fit my Kimber Ultra TLE 3" in a custom built IWB from Ryan Grizzle Leather inside.) ;)

Heck I weighed today, middle of the afternoon and was 165.3 and I've not even been working this week to lose water weight. (Dr's orders to stay away from that till at least Tuesday this week, so I've just been piddling around.) On a long day detailing I'll drop 3 lbs EASY, especially if I don't take a cooler with me full of Gatorade and water. :dunno:

Hey daddy'o why u no carry cocked & locked? The Kershaw folder is a utility, I carry a ka-bar tdi on my support side IWB 10:30'ish, right handed sheath for reverse grip.

Back on topic...

Do any of you guys fire up a customers car, ac, radio etc. for a quick burst of cool air while wiping the interior down?

Damn, man, you're in better shape than I am. I used to have a 32" waist, and as you said, I sweat way more now in almost any weather. All that extra insulation, lol. If I put as much effort into working out as I do detailing my car, I'd be looking sexy, I imagine.

^^^You're talking about "The Miami Heat"...aren't you^^^?
If so...Try this on "King James":
The Tonya Harding/Jeff Gillooly-"Method"...that was successfully used on Nancy Kerrigan
during a practice session at the 1994 Women's U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

:D

This is what I do when it's hot out and I'm detailing or working around the house outside. Just get a Water Sprite and dip it into a cold bucket of water or put ice in if you prefer and then drape it arond your neck and down into your t shirt. It works amazing and its cheap and effective. When you start to get hot again just dip it . You may want to have 2 so you always have one in there.

When it's hot and humid in Michigan, I don't detail. lol. But I do prefer the towel in a bucket of ice water trick.

And always carry in condition one. If I need it I sure don't have time to rack the slide (I don't carry a 1911).
