Do I need a thickness gauge?

Yes. Spot polishing and bumpers and pillars make it almost a necessity. The other thought is to get the Megs 3in MF DA pads. Of course, I recommend the MF DA system anyway. If you dont have it, think about adding it in.

Spring 2012 - The Beast is out of Hibernation...

Trust me, I am having withdrawal. I cant get mine under the spoiler in the front. The jack point is too far under the front end. The main body of the jack gets in the way. I have to jack up the side with my little jack a couple inches to get it under there. I use the baggie method too...

Spring 2012 - The Beast is out of Hibernation...

Yeah, this weather has been tempting me. I still have not uncovered her, but, it is coming early this year. We have had very little sand on the roads this year. That is usually what holds me back. I have that jack too. No problems at all. Works great. I would like to it to be a little...

Do I need a thickness gauge?

I started with an old style PC and used it for years (still do, actually). About 2 years ago I bought the Griots 6 in DA. I had no idea what I was missing. The PC gave good results, just slowly. The increase in power to the newer DAs cuts a lot of time off the job. So, naturally, once I...

Do I need a thickness gauge?

I my opinion, you do not NEED one unless you want to use a rotary polisher or start wetsanding. Standard DA polishing should not take much paint off the car. If you can feel a scratch with your fingernail, it is too deep and you should not try to polish it completely out. If you are careful...

Griot's 3" Mini Polisher works great as a 3" Dampsander

Obviously Mike is more experienced than me, but, I have been using 4, 5 or 6 depending on the grit and the job. I was using 4 or 5 with the 1500 and 5 or 6 with 3000. I would likely use the higher settings once I am more comfortable with how quickly it removes paint. I even tried some dry...

    Griots 3" DA

I thought it was too. Until I started using it for sanding. IT is a great tool for that. The pneumatic griots 3 in is a great polisher/sander , but, the air hose makes it extremely cumbersome to use. As Opie said, trade it out. I bet someone will make that deal.

Painted alloy wheel, what to use?

Do you know if it is clear coated? If so, treat it just like paint. You can coat it with any wax, sealant or permanant coating.

    Machine waxing?

You could also use a butter knife and toast type application. just lightly skim a little off the wax and spread it on your pad. Be sure to use very little though.

    Griots 3" DA

I have been using mine for headlights and wet/dry sanding paint. I love it for both of those. For regular correction, I go to my PC with a 3 or 4 in backing plate. I use the PC for 3 in MF discs.

    Drysanding?

Funny this thread popped up again. Just last night I tried dry sanding a huge deep RID on the hood of my practice car (1995 Honda Accord. The hood is a repaint with very thick paint - 1200 micrometers in some spots.) I used Norton Dry Ice 3 in discs, 1500 grit on my GG3 in. I actually loved...

70 hour restorative detail on my '02 Z06 - Immaculate Reflections

Great write up. Beautiful car. I test drove one of the blue and silver special edition ones a few years back. It had the Borla exhaust. It was loud (but sweet). People were snapping their necks at every intersection I took off from.

How may of you own a Paint Thickness Gauge

I am not a pro or part time. I am just a hobbyist. I just got the Highline II for Christmas. I love it. I am dabbling in wetsanding and rotary polisher use. I feel a lot better about what I am doing by checking first.

FLEX XC 3401 dual action or step up to a rotary?

I got my 849x today. IT is a beast. Makes those little DAs look and feel like toys. I was hoping to take it for a spin tonight. I might just do it to play with it. Unfortunately, the AG order did not come yet (the Dewalt came from a company they cant price match). The AG order has my...

FLEX XC 3401 dual action or step up to a rotary?

I failed to mention that the MF/DA system is one of the reasons I prefer my GG6 over 3401. Those pads are the bomb. They are real easy to work with, clean on the fly with compressed air and throw in the wash with other MF towels when done. Not to mention the results are fantastic. Danube...

    Car Cover?

I use one in the winter only as I store it from T-giving until the salt and sand clears off the road. I think a better, dont-scratch-it technique is as follows: Make sure the car is always clean and dust free whenever you use the cover. That way no dirt will ever get on the inside. If you...

FLEX XC 3401 dual action or step up to a rotary?

Honestly, I prefer my GG6 over my 3401. The Flex is a well built machine, no doubt. It just is harder to work than the GG. It tends to want to work you instead.

FLEX XC 3401 dual action or step up to a rotary?

Just ordered the Dewalt 849x. Should be here tomorrow. Gonna do some wetsanding and then correcting with it this weekend. I have the 3401,but felt it was time to go rotary. I just couldnt justify the price of the PE14 right now.
