Is this really typical of body shops?!?!

Thats a shame Laura ! But the good news it will polish up very nicely and easily now that the paint is still fresh/soft. I would still point out the swirls to them and tell them fresh paint shouldnt look like that.

Any advice from those polishing car outside?

Nice work! Get yourself a ca. car duster. It works perfect for removing dust quickly . Just dont use any pressure when dusting.:xyxthumbs: According to some it can scratch really soft clearcoats so use with caution.

    White spots

Turtle wax makes some crappy colored waxes that can temporarily fill in the chips and make them less noticable. Its a temporary solution but it helps, it works best on black.

Removing Hairline Scratches and Tiny Chip

You will never be able to remove chips of paint, they need to be filled in with paint or sanded down and repainted.

White car, Rain, a black layer that will not come off after washing

I dont know what to tell you then. I havent really seen this on clearcoats unless they are very severely neglected from not washing .But it wouldnt be black in color, more like brown. Maybe someone else has seen this and can help you.

Optimum Auto Detailing™Interior Detailing Horror! Steamwashed

Maybe the seats had something on them before that makes the after pic compared to the old look dry . I think the small size of the pictures may be a factor too! I did read once you shouldnt steam leather but I dont know if theres any truth to it.

White car, Rain, a black layer that will not come off after washing

Yes its happened to me on mostly single stage paints that are not washed often enough. Those honey combed bug scrubbers work pretty good for that but then you still have to re wax.
