Okay, so this was my first attempt with my brand new PC7424XP. I know this isn't a full detail, but I didn't know what else to call it. My focus was bringing my paint back to life, so I apologize up front for any dirt you might see on the wheels, wheel wells, and windows. :p

Let me begin by saying I bought this car in May of '09 and really haven't done anything to it besides occassional washes and oil changes. Getting out of the car scene and getting married is what I'll blame that on.

This car has been ridden with swirls since I bought it. It was originally a leased vehicle and I think I'm the 5th or 6th owner, which I found out when I got the title. So it was definitely due for some swirl and scratch removal.

Here was the method I chose and the products/tools that I used:

Wash with two bucket method using:
- Dawn dish soap
- 2 cheap buckets with Meguiars grit guards
- LC foam wash pad
- Craftsman air compressor to blow out water

Clay bar all painted surfaces and the sunroof using:
- Meguiars clay kit
- Griot's Garage Speed Shine MF towels

Polish all painted surfaces using:
- PC7424XP on speed 5
- LC 5.5" flat orange pad
- Meguiars 105
- Cobra black MF towels
- Cheap terry cloth towels to clean pads on the fly
- Craftsman air compressor to blow off dust

Wax
- Poorboys Natty Paste Wax (Red)
- Cheap MF applicator pad from Wal-Mart
- Griot's Garage MF polish removal cloths

Tires
- DP Tire Gel
- Flex Foam Tire Dressing Pad

I'll start off with a picture of how the car was sitting; dirty and lifeless.

Now that the car is all cleaned up, it's time to address some of the issues that I wanted to eliminate. Some of the scratches were just too deep.

Swirl City!!

Some road rash in the front bumper.

More road rash

I should mention, when I first bought the car, and before I knew anything about machine polishing, I did clay bar the entire car and apply some Zaino products to the paint, so there wasn't a lot of above surface contamination since May/June of last year. Here's what the clay looked like after most panels.

Here she is getting taped up

I couldn't get a really good 50/50 shot, but here is a before and after on the hood. My clear coat is getting what I believe is called "sealant popping" as evidenced by the little pock marks in the after shot.

After

I was able to knock down some of the front bumper road rash, to the point that I was satisfied.

Here's a nice shot to show the reflection in the side of the car

A nice hood reflection of myself

I liked this 50/50 reflection off the hood, looking at the garage. It's like the garage door is coming right out of the paint!

An overall shot of the entire car.

And here's a shot of one tire with DP tire gel, if anyone is curious what it looks like with one application. I think it looks great, and it held up well to the 800 mile round trip on my wife's Elantra 2 weekends ago.

Overall, I'm completely satisfied with the end result. I walked outside at 7am Sunday morning, took three quick breaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and didn't come back in until 9:40pm. So I'd say 14 hours of work. Needless to say, I'm fairly sore today, but I feel like I learned a lot and could definitely get the job done in quite a bit less time the next time around.

Due to the amount of time it took to polish the entire car and with how well the M105 both removed swirls and polished the paint, I didn't feel the want/need to go onto M205. The paint looked awesome and was ready for the Natty's Red Paste Wax, which really made this paint pop!

Any and all feedback, positive or negative, is very welcome. Thank you for reading my first thread in the Show n' Shine forum!

Outstanding job and results!

You definitely brought the car back to life! I bet it feels like you just got it all over again.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I was very proud this morning on my drive to work. It was almost as if the engine ran smoother and the clutch grabbed even nicer than usual. I think my car was happy to receive some attention! Im the MAN

Sweet job, looks great. Road rashes came out pretty good too.

WOW, M105/Orange left nice finish. I always thought when using M105/orange, a light polish/pad combo would be necessary.

Good to know.

Thanks, Mark!

Tenzin,
I was pretty surprised myself. It seems every thread I've read about using M105 has always been followed up by M205. After the M105, I took the car out of the garage to see if different lighting would give me a reason to go to the M205, but the finish was amazing. There were some scratches that I was surprised the M105/orange didn't take out, but I figured M205/white wouldn't stand a chance on them. The paint was definitely wax-ready, and my body was bed-ready!

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. This was definitely a rewarding task and I look forward to making more car owners as happy as I am.

:xyxthumbs:Great Job.. the car looks much better now

Great job correcting the paint surface. The Mazda 6 looks amazing. Keep up the great work.

Outstanding! Looks great! I've been wanting to pick up some 105 myself. I've read a lot here about how some say its a pain to remove and dries to quickly. It made me hesitant to purchase it. After using it how would you respond to the "workability" issue?

Looks great!! Can't believe how well 105 finished out on that color. I live in Fort Wayne too BTW, and my friends dad has the exact same car in the same trim and color. I've been begging him to let me detail the paint because its badly swirled now and it looked FANTASTIC like yours when he bought it.

Great job man looks great, now just keep it out of mikes car wash aka the tunnel of swirls. but you did a great job and thanks for the picture of the DP tire gel i think i might get some. I like matte finish no sligning glossy tire shine down the side of the car. but again amazing turn around.

Thanks a lot, guys!

Clearview - I experienced the same, short work-time with the 105. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I was using it properly, but as Mike Phillips says, find what works for you and stick with it. I probably should have prepped the pad a little better, but my very first pass I started out by squirting a big 'X' on the pad with the 105. That first section got me 5 or 6 section passes, no problem. From there on, I would use anywhere from 3 - 6 pea sized blobs on the pad in a triangle, but I was getting about 2 section passes with good pressure and it was disappearing on me. Most of the time I would continue to run 1 or 2 more section passes with no pressure, just to pickup any product that was still on the paint. Dusting was an issue, but nothing I can't live without, after seeing the outcome.

zliegen - Cool! Whereabout are you in Fort Wayne? I'm on the south west side. kimandbrad21 is just north of Fort Wayne if I remember correctly. Maybe your friend's Dad needs me to stop by to give him the motivation to toss you the keys for a full detail! :props:

bradandkim21 - Definitely no more Mike's Car washes for me. With as rough as the paint looked, I admittedly ran it through Mike's a few times since I've owned it. It was a struggle as I was used to always having one garage queen and one beater, where the garage queen would only get hand washes and the beater, well, it stayed dirty.

Tonight after work and running up to the hospital for a tour (of the birthing center), I had to run to CVS. The sun was going down and the reflection off the paint had me walking backwards into the store so I could stare back at the car. It's amazing to me how awesome the PC7424XP is for someone who has never used a machine polisher before. To be able to get professional results my first time around just blows my mind!

I'm on the southwest side, aboite area.

Excellent. I always enjoying polishing that type of color because it shows such great improvement once the swirls are removed.
