This 1966 Ford Mustang has its original gold metallic paint and has been stored outside for the last two decades in Los Angeles, CA

It was recently purchased for a quick mini-restoration & resale

Paint was very dull, without the slightest hint of shine or reflection

The budget was low, so the goal was getting back a decent amount of shine so that the vehicle would photograph better for sale on the Internet

The process was limited to two stages:

Friday evening a heavy application of Meguiars Mirror Glaze #7 Show Car Glaze to get some moisture back into the paint and prepare it for polishing

Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze is a final step auto glaze to enhanced the gloss prior to wax application. Get a show car shine with Meguiars #7 Show Car

Saturday evening, I began the compounding step to remove the heavy layer of oxidation, with Lake Country Hybrid Wool, Meguiar's M100 and my FLEX 3401.

This combination gummed up very quickly and spurring, brushing and blowing out the pad was not working well.

I changed up to a Lake Country Orange Cutting Pad, M100 and my FLEX 3401. I used this combination "wet"...lots of M100 and misting the surface with water.

Yes, this pad WAS orange

I think this combo allowed the massive amount of oxidized paint to become suspended in the large amount of M100.

Working a small, 12" x 12", area also seemed to help. I used all eight of the Orange pads I had available.

I found that wiping off with a dry microfiber towel was difficult and switched to a wet MF towel.
Not damp...soaking wet, dunked in a bucket of water between sections

The process was moving along pretty quickly

I chose a wax, instead of sealant; with hopes that it would contribute additional moisture to the paint

The project was finished up after midnight

After pictures were taken by the Customer the following day

Very very very nice turnaround. That mike p process is awesome.

Great work. I am becoming a big believer in the Mirror Glaze #7.

Nice work and If I was the customer I would initiate a double blow it up fist pump and give you a well deserved tip.

Incredible restoration....fitting that this resurrection was shown Easter Sunday.

Beautiful! You really brought that paint back to life.

Great post!!! Great save and turn around! Excellent work and skills!

Nice save. You know why wiping off the paint residue with a dry mf towel was not working? I know you found a solution using a wet towel but I'm wondering was the paint too dry for the paint residue & abrasives to release?

You may be correct, that the paint was not fully nourished with one heavy application of #7

This was a modified version of Mike Phillips, more extensive process with #7

Total time for the project was 4 1/2 hours

30 minutes for application of #7 and 4 hours of compounding, the following day

.

Wow, I don't know what is more impressive, the restoration of that paint, or the fact that you transformed an orange cutting pad into a black finishing pad:) nice work. Let us know how much the guy nets on that resale. I would have never guessed single stage paint could improve that much.

Even though it was a V-6... He sold it in one week.

Los Angeles is a hot market for anything with a little bit of heritage and no roof.

This is another one of his projects:

Oh looks like you will be working on a flying car next!

Did you wear nitrile gloves?

Wait, I saw the picture.. Man that's an insane amount of crud that came off that paint. Amazing turnaround.👏🏼
