I did a full detail on an old Porsche yesterday. The gentleman who owns it has had it for the past 30yrs. and it was my pleasure to work on it.

I started off by cleaning the wheels & tires with Megs D143 then gave it a full bucket wash outside while it was still cloudy ⛅

Fully dried it then proceeded to claybar the hood to get a look at the level of contamination that was on the paint. As expected, not too bad but definitely worth giving it a quik clay.

I clayed the rest of the paint with a Speedy Prep Towel.

Here’s what it looked like after washing and claying.

Next I decided to do a test spots with a couple of different products.
1st up was McKee’s Jeweling Wax on a foam polishing pad using the HF DA. Great results, removed/filled in nearly all the minor swirls and left a superb finish on the paint.

On the other fender I used Meguiars D166 Ultra Finishing Wax. Identical results as far as my eyes could tell.

The only difference was the Meguiars left a much smoother finish, so I decided to go with the D166 and a Meguiars Burgundy Foam Cutting Pad for the vertical panels.

The horizontal panels had deeper swirls, so I went with McKee’s Fast Compound on a 7” LC Orbital Foam Polishing Pad using the Boss G21.

Swirls are gone and finished near perfect.

Topped it off with sealant to give this garage queen long lasting protection and this thing was set. Here’s a few after shots.

Cool little car. Owner said it’s never looked better. Thanks for reading.

Awesome work and write up and pictures!

Thanks for shareing your work!

Wish I would have bought one of these when they were going for next to nothing.

Very nice example, you brought it back to like new. Nice work!

That owner has done a nice job of caring for that car for 30 years.

Looks great!

Amazing little car and very underappreciated. I'd love to toss one around a twisty back road some day just to see how a modest sports car from that era drives.

Is the Franklin Little League bat used as a wheel chock? Or are you in a sketchy neighborhood and protecting yourself from thugs:)

Judging by the homes, it doesn't look too bad of a place to raise a family.

Oh my... that's one of the nicest looking 914s I've seen in a long time. Great job.

The history of the 914 is interesting. It was sort-of a joint collaboration with VW that yielded the 914 and the VW Karman Ghia. For a very long time the 914 was considered by many to not be a "real" Porsche and they were very inexpensive. 914s in good condition are now collectible and quite expensive.

Nice work! Very well kept 914. The owner should be proud to show this one off.

Nice job man! Those are great little cars. Unfortunately my back would not like me after polishing one of them, so props to you!

Yea the owner and I got to talking about cars, and he was saying the same thing. He was talking about Jaguars and those types of cars. Quite different from my wheelhouse, but definitely interesting.

He’s got another car in his garage that he’s in the middle of doing a complete frame off restoration... I forgot what he said it was [somekind of German car or something like that] but he said it was a pretty special car. The body has been recently painted and according to him just the shell sitting as is could easily fetch 25-30k. I saw a picture of the car before he began restoring it and it already looked nice. Wish I could remember what make it is.

Yup that’s exactly what the bat was there for. Lol. The owner said he had been tinkering with it and ended up disabling or removing the parking brake for the time being, so he used the bat to chock the wheel.

Thanks Rippy! Yea as soon as I booked the job I did a little research on these vehicles, very interesting and pretty rare considering I had never really known about them. The owner loves his car, he told me he’s got it insured by Hagerty for $25,000.

Thanks! Dude is proud as can be about his baby for sure.

Oh my goodness you’re spot on! I could bearly get outta bed yesterday morning! Ouch! Lol. Back was killing me and I was awakened by killer leg cramps.

Wanna hear something funny? When the sun began to show up and it was time to bring it into the garage the owner got in and told me to keep an eye on the bat so he could pull in... I said ok and turned my back to set whatever I had in my hand down and before I could turn around he was already moving forward and I was like whoa hold on! Lol. He ran over the bat and that thing was literally about to fly in any direction! So lucky it didn’t cause any damage but I couldn’t believe it!lol. Crazy.

Ah, the old Cheesebox-on-a-Raft! I haven't seen one of those in a long time.

Funny about the bat/chock, you should tell him to get a real chock or at least a 2x4.

Very nice work on a super clean 914! Well done!! Was this a repaint or was it original single stage paint?

Thanks. Re paint. The original color was blue, but you’d never guess that. He said he took his time and found the right guy to do the proper job. He showed me a picture of the car the day he bought it, basically just a shell of a car that needed complete restoration.
