Nice work and very cool car and opportunity to detail. I had one of these for my Detailing Boot Camp Classes back in May of 2013...

Thanx Mike. I really enjoyed doing it and CG BL and BW produced awesome results. I will be taking care of this car in the future too.

86 and 87's are the way to go, don't forget Limited's, T-types and turbo T's too, same drivetrains other than no 8.5" rearends, only the GN's had those.

I still have such a soft spot for G bodies. Had both an 84 and 85 Regal back in the day. I was looking to buy an 86 442 and bugged the owner for about 5 years trying to get her to sell it to me. She came to me a month after I bought my 73 and told me she was looking to sell. I could not afford both at the time, so needless to say, I was pretty bummed. Not sure what ever happened to it. I also had an opportunity to pick up a low mile 87 GN (5,000 miles) for about $14K. Being a poor college student at the time, I chose to stay in school instead. Absolutely love the GNs. Someday, I will have one.

Most G bodies used 7.5" rear. Monte SS had 7 5/8" rear. Grand Nationals, T-Types AND Olds 442 all used 8.5"

The GN was not the only G body with 8.5" rear. :xyxthumbs:

T-types had 7.5" rearends for sure and don't know why other G-bodies would even need an 8.5", LOL!

Now you made me look it up! LOL.

Since I am kind of an Olds guy, I knew the 83-84 H/Os and 85-87 442s has the 8.5" along with the GN. I was pretty sure the T-Type also shared the same drivetrain, but now we know.

According to G-body .org, the diffs are as follows:

8.5" RPO GU6, 3.42 ratio, 3TP (Conventional) 3TJ (limited slip) - (T-Type, GN Standard)

8.5" RPO GT4, 3.73 ratio, 3TG, 3TE (Conventional) 3TX (limited slip) - (Olds 442, GN Optional)

Not sure why they used the 8.5" either. Gotta love the 80s.

Ooooooooo I just love those cars!

Looks hot! :dblthumb2:

Sorry!

Awesome work!!
Me too but it`s good info.Nice work on the car.The GN that Mike posted although a nice car the painter could have done a better job on keeping his gun and atmosphere cleaner. We finished it up on a Thurs. night makeover.Like everything Mike tackles we brought the paint to it`s fullest potential.:buffing:

The 2nd one posted w/ the 3.73 gear being optional in the GN, never ever heard of that gear in the turbo Regals, maybe the ultra rare 82' GN had that, don't know but as far as 84-87's, all were 3.42 gears. Now I can't remember if they changed the ratio in the GNX or not, could google it I suppose but just making a post. I bet the 3.42 and 3.73 were optional in the Hurst/442's though.

The turbo Regals also had an optional aluminum rear brake drum option, wonder what those cost if you had em' and needed new ones, LOL! Ever notice on 86-87 turbo Regals where the "idiot" lights are and it says POWER INJECTION? I went for a ride in an 87' turbo T one time and he hooked up water injection into the engine when it hit 5lbs of boost and that light lit up! Apparently it was something GM was working on but scrapped the idea, for whatever reason! They had some cool stuff over there back then that people didn't know about, damn Corvette owners knew about the turbo Regals though, LOL!!!

Good to know as we were on edge on that one.But one of the reasons I joined this site and do the Thursday night makeovers is some guys know the mechanical part and nothing about paint.(like me).In an effort to be a well rounded car owner and a willingness to learn my eyes sure have been opened here.No expert but am comfortable with machines and AG products and have developed a different "look" at cars at shows or otherwise.Whats great about working side by side with Mike is you develop the eye on what to look for and run with it.Once you learn the Technics combined with science it`s cool for the amateur.Point being that it`s beneficial for a classic car owner to be familiar all aspects of their car.Now newer cars I rely on my ASE certified friend.
