1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Single Stage Paint

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Looks great. Those kind of jobs with a very noticeable before and after appearance are very rewarding. Nicely done guys.

Wheels and Tires

Huge thank you to Frank for tackling the worst part of this project and that was trying to make some kind of difference with the wheels and tires.

The wheels are clearcoated polished aluminum and there's a lot of areas where the clearcoat has come off and is flaking and peeling off where it's still on the wheel.

Not much anyone can do to fix clearcoat failure on a wheel except to remove the tires from the wheels and have them re-painted. That's beyond our scope for our Thursday night projects so we'll let the owners handle this aspect.

We did clean and then dress the tires though and that's where Frank took over...

Machine cleaning with a Cyclo soft upholstery brush on a Griot's DA Polisher.

After machine scrubbing and hand wiping the tires clean, Frank uses BLACKFIRE Total Eclipse Tire Shine Spray to restore a deep, dark shine to the tires.

This is unreal .

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

A 1998 with single stage paint?

After moving the Isuzu into the studio and inspecting more closely we verified this Isuzu has been repainted. The current paint is single stage and it's possible the factory paint was single stage but it could have been basecoat/clearcoat. Only an Isuzu Rodeo Guru would know for sure.

I hope you don't ruin that perfect matte red finish.

Too late... we done ruined it.... :D

Gee , that s some turnaround !

Couple guys here at work that saw this Isuzu yesterday before we worked it over thought it was a lost cause.

Incredible Mike and the rest of the team. Way to bring life back to that Isuzu. Looks like the owner just scored brownie points with his new soon to be mother-in-law.

She hasn't even seen it yet! She'll see it tonight when Mike returns it to her...

wow i really want to try and make it out to the next one!! excellent job guys!!

Here's the next automotive project...

Sign up: 1965 Chevy C10 Fleetside Extreme Makeover!

Mike, it's nice to see a "common man's/woman's" car made to look so nice.

Much time is spent on more special vehicles and I understand that but this is refreshing to see.

I agree. I actually like doing extreme makeovers to what some people would consider a "beater". One of my favorite all time projects was "The Chicken Truck", back in Oregon.

Any special tricks for that front grill or all done by hand?

I actually put out some buffer sticks, cone shaped foam on a stick that you can use with an electric drill but before I could get someone going on the grill with the drill a bunch of guys knocked it out by hand.

Thanks Dr Oldz, appreciate the comment... these guys really went to town on this old Isuzu...

Thanks Mike, it's too bad we couldn't do more with the wheels due to the clear coat failure but we did the best we could under the circumstances. At least we got the tires looking good :props:. What an amazing transformation on the paint! The guys did a super job on the paint with your training and suggestions of products and methods :dblthumb2:.

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

what a turn around, that looks like a new paint job

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

I would ve tought so myself Mike ! How many people had their ride repainted without knowing such processes or knowledge .

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

I don't know Mike, your slipping! I see quite a bit of product dust down in between the hood and fenders! Lol!

Seriously though, OMG! What a transformation! Any unknowing person would end up paying $2000+ for a paint job that wouldn't even look nearly as great as you and the team made it look! Great work! This one will definitely stick in my mind for a long time!

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Just sitting at my computer and my 14 year old daughter who really isn't into cars at all walks by---I show her the before and after photos...

"Gee Dad, even I have to admit that's pretty good."

High praise from her!

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Amazing work, that Blackfire along with your crew kicked some Rodeo butt!

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

that was fun.
it is not going to win any shows, but if that was my car and it came back after a day looking like that i would be thrilled. wish i could see the reaction of the owner when she gets it.

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

You just doubled the value of that vehicle!

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Great results!

Mike is there any reason to not use a machine for the number 7? Feed back please

i'm sure Mike will respond and correct any wrong info i give, but as i understand it from last night:

-- you want to use terry cloth towels as sort of a mild abrasive to rub the oils into the paint and remove oxidized paint
-- anything used on a machine will simply be not abrasive enough, or too abrasive, and not as controlled. (think resto work on antique cars to preserve original paint)
-- we were really laying into it with the towels, very different than any hand application technique that would ever be used on a clear coat.

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Wow...

How long did you allow #7 to sit on the paint?

Re: 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Factory Single Stage Paint

Incredible turnaround!!! What did you guys use around the lettering (badging)?
