This is my friend's 2002 Z06, and to my knowledge, it's never had a proper detail. I've attempted correcting it before with the Flex using purple Kompressor pads....105, Power Gloss, 1Z Intensiv Paste, nothing would touch the defects. Since we now have Surbuf pads, I told him to bring it on by and we'll see what we could do.

Products used:

Wash:
-Griot's Garage Car Wash
-Cobra Blue Micro-Chenille Wash Mitts
-Daytona Speedmaster Wheel Brush
-Pinnacle Clear Coat Safe Wheel Cleaner
-Cobra Guzzler Drying Towels

Clay:
-Pinnacle XMT Speed Clay
-DP Universal Clay Lubricant

Correction:
-Flex XC3401 VRG
-Meguiar's #105 Ultra Cut Compound with Surbuf R Series 6.5" pads
-Meguiar's #205 Ultra Finishing Polish with Lake Country Tangerine Hydro-Tech pads

LSP:
-Wolfgang Fuzion Carnauba Polymer Estate Wax

Misc:
-Flitz metal polish, Wolfgang Finger Pockets for exhaust
-Meguiar's #205 on wheels
-DP Gloss Tire Gel on tires
-Black nitrile gloves
-Cobra Indigo Edgeless Microfibers
-Cobra Deluxe Jr 600 Microfibers
-Autogeek Show Car Garage Apron

The car hadn't been washed since June according to him, and it really showed.

Thanks for looking! :)

Hey Matt,

An first rate detailed report including photos that nicely show the before and after affects of a great detailing job.

Superb work my friend and a great step-by-step report! :props:

Tell me that's not your garage, I'm drooling on this end; room, lighting, tools, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks Bob! That's our Show Car Garage here at the 'Geek :)

Bitchin' work, Matt! Looks GREAT! :dblthumb2:

Any particular reason you used tang instead of white with 205?

Thanks Mark! Surbuf pads don't finish too nice in my experience. They cut harder and faster than any pads I've used, and with that, they just do not finish that well. For that reason, I chose to go with Tangerine Hydro-Techs for the final polishing step. On such hard paint, these pads left a perfect finish and had no problem removing any minor hazing left behind from the Surbufs.

Makes plenty of sense. :props: I agree, surbuf pads don't finish too well, but cut GREAT!

Great work Matt! I've been very impressed with the Surbuf's myself and they are definitely a game changer with the DA's! :dblthumb2:

Nice work Matt...

Not only did Matt restore a finish worthy of the Corvette name, he also taught his good friend how to,

  1. Properly wash wheels and tires
  2. Properly wash and dry a Corvette
  3. How to Evaluate the condition of the paint
  4. How to use detailing clay
  5. How to do a Test Spot
  6. How to use the Flex 3401
  7. How to use a DA Polisher
  8. How to create a deep, wet shine...
Fits this philosophy very nicely...

"Each one teach one"

And I really liked this picture... :D

Thanks everybody! Now I just need Bruce to order some Guzzlers and other goodies to keep it looking good. :D

Very sweet turn around. Those did look to be some pretty serious swirls...Ive seen so many good reports on the surbuf pads but this car in the condition it was in and being RED..along with a vett's hard paint...really show its ability to do some serious cutting.

Did he let you take it for a spin when you were finished :props:
