has anyone dealt with clear on the 2011 camaros? i just picked up my new car and i wanna polish it(DISO). after i told them not to wash it.. boooo!!. is the clear hard?? Med? Soft? any help would be appricated!!

Jay

IMO it is much easier to work with then Corvette clear. I wouldnt call it soft but it definitly isnt as hard as what you would typically see on a Corvette.

As always though, start with a test spot and use the left agressive method you can to get the results you desire.

hmm... just tried white ccs pad with Megs UC... barely did anything......gunne have to try orange pad i guess...Boo Hoo!! lol

I did a 2010 earlier this summer and the clear was very hard. I ended up going with m105/cyan HT, m205/tangerine HT, and 85rd/black Flat(dark paint)...Good luck and congrats on the new ride (a very sweet ride for sure)!!! What color is it?

the car is Vicktory Red 8)... i havent tried the m105 orange/cyan pad yet.. when i have time .. sigh.. cant stand to see the car like this! lol

Doubt you will see any results with UC. I got great results using M105/orange pad--M205/white pad

I've found that metallics will generally be harder. The black one I worked on was on the softer side, not hard by any means.

Same here... in fact wrote an article about the experience because there's been a lot of talk about the clear on new Camaros...

Camaro Clear and my take...

I would do a Test Spot first, using the least aggressive pads and products you have and then working your way to more aggressive products and pads till you dial-in a system that is removing the defects and you're able to leave a nice finish.

What do you have for,

  • Pads
  • Products
  • Tools

?

I have one. The clear coat is HARD. Mike's article was the best description I've read regarding the new Camaro (which is one bad azz car).

Mike.. for prodcuts i have:

machines: PCXP, Flex 3401
Compound: Megs m105, Megs UC
Polishes: Megs m205, Mez 85rd, PB ssr 1-2.5
Pads: CCS: orange white... HT Low pro: Cyan

when i hit the test pot with white and megs UC.. sems like it didnt anything to to swirl marks.. though it did clean up the paint a bit.

I would test out the Orange cutting pad and the M105 if UC and the white polishing pad didn't remove the swirls.

Which size pads are these?

Regardless, if using the PC be sure to be on the 6.0 speed setting and if using the Flex 3401 be on the 5.0 to 6.0 speed setting.

Since you're having problems removing the swirls, be sure to place a tape line down and only work on one side of it so you can clearly see progress or lack of progress for swirls and scratch removal.

Also, shrink the size of your work area down so you can focus all the abrading power to one small area.

Be sure to move the polisher s-l-o-w-l-y over the area you're working and apply firm downward pressure.

DISO

Jay

So when you say DISO are these swirls induced by a rotary buffer or just poor washing and wiping techniques?

If they are rotary buffer induced, they could be deep, just depends upon the pad, the product and the pressure used to buff the paint.

Sorry to hear the dealership had to ruin a perfectly good paint job.

It's a crime that in order to undo the damage they caused you have to remove a measure of paint off the car, paint that's already thin and as you're finding out, hard to work on.

I've worked with guys on forums like this that have taken their brand new car back to the dealership and got their money back and purchased somewhere else.

You shouldn't have to accept a car that will now have thinner paint because the dealership doesn't care to have properly trained employees.

Print this thread out and take it to the dealership owner and tell him you want a Camaro that his employees have not hacked-up.

For those reading this that don't know what DISO is...

DISO = The Dealership Installed Swirl Option

Excerpt...

Here's a section of the above photo cropped out and in full size...
Often times you'll hear or read about "Holograms" or "Buffer Trails". These are both interchangeable terms for Rotary Buffer Swirls.

If you look at the below swirls they almost seem to have a 3D or floating in the paint affect, this is the appearance characteristic from which we get the word hologram.

One of the smartest things I did when I ordered my new Camaro was to tell the dealer not to touch the paint (as in...don't prep the car's paint at all)..!...yeah the car was filthy when I drove it home...but the dealer didn't even wash the car...so he did listen to me...and it was less work for them.

I've seen how some dealers prep new cars...it would make you sick, especially in small markets where they hire a couple of kids for a few bucks to wash and wipe down the cars.

scratched were from just terrible washing techniques.....not from rotary buffers... thank god.......otherwise i would not have taken the car. once i get home to my shop in ny, long island... i'll have to spend some time correcting the paint...thx all for the great feedback!! what would i do w/o u guys! hahahah

Happy :buffing: and a happy new year! 8)
