2018 Mustang - Next New Car?

I've owned Fords my entire life and never had an issue with reliability of them. Not saying they (and ALL brands) don't have an occasional lemon.
My sister's '92 Mustang LX is still running strong (just saying).

I tend to agree with GSKR- if I was going to get a "muscle car" I'd get a V8, no questions about it.

So its been a really crappy year for me....so I am pondering treating myself to a new car at the end of the year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my existing 2013 Honda Accord Coupe. And if Honda continued to make a coupe for 2018, there would be no decision. But they are leaving someone like me behind. Im single with no kids, and I just dont want or need a 4 door car (or an SUV or truck or crossover). I have always been partial to Honda's and Acura's as I know they are well built reliable vehicles. With that said, the new 2018 Mustang looks REALLY enticing. They have added some nice premium features (10 speed auto, digital instruments, magneride shocks etc) for 2018. And the Ecoboost seems to make a very strong performance / economy argument despite the fact it sounds like nothing. I cant think of another coupe (besides the Camaro) on the market that comes close to performance, and luxury features for anywhere close to the price of a Mustang. While I love the Camaro exterior styling, its just to darn small on the inside. The Mustang actually has comparable front seat and trunk space to the current Accord coupe, its only in the rear that the space suffers (and I dont sit in the rear seat of my own car, ever!). My concern though is the reliability of Ford's. They are not great. Im sure I would like having a Mustang, but would I like owning one? And not interested in the GT, to get it nicely equipped it goes beyond my price range. Any thoughts from current Mustang owners?

Thanks!

I owned nothing but Fords from 1985 until 2013 when my wife all but made me buy her a Cadillac SRX. Never had a Ford let me down, or make me want to buy anything else. I put 156,000 miles on a 2006 Focus, & I've got almost 80,000 on my 2012 Fusion Sport. And I've had 7 Mustangs through the years, including the 2009 Shelby GT500 that I currently own. I'm a horsepower & V8 buy, but I test drove an Ecoboost when they 1st came out. Fun, peppy car to drive. It behaved like a typical 4 cylinder until I floored it. Then the boost did what boost does, & it was pretty fun. Too bad the 5.0 is out of your price range because they're upping it to 460 hp next year.

Oh, & I detail a new Camaro for one of my neighbors twice a year. I'm 6' tall & I bump my head getting into it every time.

I'll add to the Ford vs. Chevy talk here!

I was born and raised in a GM household but its the Mustang going away, not even close! IMO it "looks" smaller and better styled, to me. Would you get the Perf Pak on the Ecoboost? I know this, don't even bother with an exhaust because if you do, then the car sounds like my car and honestly, only Abarth's should sound that way, doesn't really match up with the Stang. I WOULD do a tune and FMIC if your into that sort of thing though.

I can't wait to see how you option it out and the color and wheel choice, lots of new colors and wheel options for the 18's I hear!

Too bad a '70 Boss 429 isn't in your budget. ;)

My favorite Ford ever.

Trust me, I would love GT. But, being this will be my daily driver, I need the fuel economy of the 4cyl. And, the temptation to constantly modify the GT will be to great.

Given the refinement of the Mustang, Im not sure it really qualifies as a muscle car anymore. They can handle, they can stop, and they ride well. And the interiors are nice, and now advanced. It can probably favorably compare with European coupes.

And yes, I have yet to hear any aftermarket exhaust on a non V8 mustang that didnt sound like farts. But with just a tune, a lot of horsepower is easily attainable from the Ecoboost. Its kinda crazy.

Im considering basically a fully loaded Ecoboost, performance package, with Magneride shocks, 10speed auto, and one of the blue colors. And before anyone rags on the auto, the auto will be surely faster than the manual, and most likely get several mpg's better fuel economy. AND, I drive in a lot of stop and go traffic and driving a manual in those circumstances is a bore.

Get whatever you want... no one should rag on you about your choice. You're the one that is paying for it and has to drive it every day.

Good luck and post pics when it happens!

I see you're in Miami so I won't bother making the point that Mustangs suck in snow!

I've been driving daily 365/year a '15 GT since Sept. 2015 (35k miles now) and haven't had any problems whatsoever. With the IRS it's a blast to carve back road twisties and even tons of fun in harsh Canadian winter snow. Ecoboost technology is tried and true as long as you don't go big turbo with an aggressive tune (Some of the guys on Mustang 6G forum have been blowing engines going big)...

The 2018 packages and pricing are kind of whack though, bringing a well speced GT between 45-50k which is ridiculous when you can get loaded '16-'17s in the low/mid 30k range. If you can do without the digital cluster, magnaride and active exhaust, I'd look in to a '16 or '17 GT with Recaros, performance pack and 401A premium pack if I were in your position. I'm pretty sure your could get one for the price of a '18 Ecoboost with similar options and you could easily bring it up to par (at your own rhythm) with a '18 GT performance wise for around 2300$ (Eibach Sportline springs 200$ used, Steeda dampers 470$ new, Steeda rear shock mounts 200$ new, BMR IRS lockouts 200$ new, Aftermarket cat-back 500$ used, intake and tune 700$ used). Another plus going with a '15 to '17 is there's a ton of aftermarket support to customize it to your liking. It's going to take a at least another year to get enough variety and for prices to go down on mods for the '18, especially engine mods because of direct injection added to the coyote.

Whatever you choose though you won't be disappointed! :dblthumb2:

Good luck and post pics if you pull the trigger!

EDIT: Oh and for gas mileage a GT isn't so bad averaging 26-27mpg on the highway. Anyway it's SMILES per gallon that count, not miles, hehe. :righton:

I have the performance pack GT and get around 25 all highway driving. In mixed I get 19-20. For a V8 it isn't too shabby.

I just have to say that while the Mustang is a nice looking car, i find it to be uncomfortable. Im a big guy, 6'2" 340lbs, so this is not the case for all im assuming. The only other issue for me is that ur talking about getting the ecoboost. IMO it is completely ridiculous to buy a "muscle" car with anything less than a V8 and anything under 400hp.

Im relatively small, 5'7" 145lbs so I fit in anything.

Consider though the last gen Mustang GT Prior to the introduction of the 5.0 motor only had 320hp? The ecoboost nearly matches that and beats that old 4.6 V8 in torque! And it destroys it with nothing more than a tune or a cold air intake (or both)!

With all the refinement that the Mustang has had over the years, I really dont think it deserves being called a muscle car anymore. All the engines have plenty of muscle, but this is hardly a wild pony anymore (although there sure are a lot of videos of Mustangs crashing leaving car shows, hmm).

I think they should have had the twin turbo v6 as found in the raptor and drop the V8. I predict that will happen at some point. The V8 within 5 years will only be found at the drag strip

I hear what your saying but no need to rush things ================

355 ft/lbs of torque....stock (1987)

I'm not calling you out inparticular so don't take offense to this but I've been hearing this "has to be V8 to be a muscle car" thing since I had my 87' GN back in the mid 1990's. On a tired, 120K original car, with bolt-ons and having a TIRED 200R4 trans and wiped out valve springs, my car ran a best of 12.6 @109 mph w/ 1.91 60 ft times. Now in stock trim these cars ran mid 14's @96 mph, not too bad even in todays time.

Fast forward to the Ecoboost Mustang and without looking it up, I'm sure the numbers are comparable stock, lightly modded and turbo/inj swapped like mine was. All this said, I do know the majority of "muscle cars" has V8's, small block and big blocks but if we want the breed to continue let's embrace it or you'll have to deal with getting paper cuts thumbing through coffee table books in 20 years reading about the "good ol' days 2.0", something to think about.

The Ecoboost is relatively easy to mod well over 400HP. My 2.3 RS dynos at 397HP at the wheels and probably close to 440HP at the crank. I didn't go radical on the mods because of warranty concerns. There are plenty of Ecoboost Mustangs out there that will beat the V8s.

Don't forget our good fried Dave Pericak (https://www.google.com/amp/amp.autoweek.com/article/racing/dave-pericak-settles-new-racing-boss-ford)

chief engineer of the s550 and now Vp of Ford Racing/ Performance developed a hp tune which doesn't void the warranty.

Interesting debate over muscle cars. Being a 4 time Mustang owner, I never thought of them as muscle cars, rather "pony cars".

I always considered muscle cars to be 64-69 GTO's, Road Runners, Chevelle's, Cuda's... or the coveted 68 Gran Torino GT500.

Either way, I have best of both worlds... an 05 GT Ragtop with the 4.6 V8, BORLA ATAk cat-back exhaust, Air-Raid CAI and Hust Short throw shifter.

On the other hand I have the 16 EB Premium w/ Pony Pack.

I love them both! I was so impressed with the EB I had to have one.... A 2 hr ride from Chandler to Flagstaff is a pice of cake for this boosted Stang.

I also just rented a GT In UT, and I have to say... the EB holds its own. Factor in all the creature comforts, cooled/heated seats, SYNC 3... what is not to love?
