2018 Mustang - Next New Car?

Haha, sounds like good fun. No-Lift-Shifting is likely built into his tune if not already there from the factory. Not as big of a deal for you as a boosted car though thus I agree I wouldn't.

The rev-limiting is built into the tune, as is the ignition-cut-assisted backfiring. Without it you can blow the engine very easily. STIs have it and it can be bypassed by some button combinations. I'm not sure about mine. I'm not interested in bypassing the rev limiter. From my perspective, as a lover of V8s, the only thing lost is the sound of 8 cylinders. A friend lives in a valley nearby and he said he could hear me from 2 miles out as I was running through the gears, up and down driving to his place. It was a Saturday morning and I was able to open it up pretty well. The exhaust sound of a tuned EcoBoost 2.3 (Mountune catted downpipe, Magnalite catback) is pretty distinct and many people haven't heard anything like it on the street. It is not a V8 so it takes some getting used to. The main difference is the spin-up is much quicker than the V8, probably due to the higher redline. The most amazing thing is the power-band. It doesn't lug down to 1000 RPM like a V8 would but it still pulls pretty nice around town at surprisingly low RPM without lugging.

This thread has gotten more love that product reviews I have done...hmm.

Anyway, lots of love for the Mustang, thats for sure. For craps and giggles I was "building" online some other comparable (I use that term loosely) coupes, like the BMW 2 series, Caddy ATS, Infinity Q60? and NONE of them I can get anywhere close to price, features, performance, to the Mustang. And the Mustang has some features the other cars don't offer. And then the aftermarket support? OMG.

I don't doubt this for a minute ;)

How exactly are you going to configure this car?

I don't feel like the 2018 is enough of an improvement over the 15-17's. I would wait until they drop and buy a new 17 for much cheaper. Also, get the V8, you won't regret i....

Having a 10 speed automatic is enough to buy the 2018.

So its been a really crappy year for me....so I am pondering treating myself to a new car at the end of the year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my existing 2013 Honda Accord Coupe. And if Honda continued to make a coupe for 2018, there would be no decision. But they are leaving someone like me behind. Im single with no kids, and I just dont want or need a 4 door car (or an SUV or truck or crossover). I have always been partial to Honda's and Acura's as I know they are well built reliable vehicles. With that said, the new 2018 Mustang looks REALLY enticing. They have added some nice premium features (10 speed auto, digital instruments, magneride shocks etc) for 2018. And the Ecoboost seems to make a very strong performance / economy argument despite the fact it sounds like nothing. I cant think of another coupe (besides the Camaro) on the market that comes close to performance, and luxury features for anywhere close to the price of a Mustang. While I love the Camaro exterior styling, its just to darn small on the inside. The Mustang actually has comparable front seat and trunk space to the current Accord coupe, its only in the rear that the space suffers (and I dont sit in the rear seat of my own car, ever!). My concern though is the reliability of Ford's. They are not great. Im sure I would like having a Mustang, but would I like owning one? And not interested in the GT, to get it nicely equipped it goes beyond my price range. Any thoughts from current Mustang owners?

Thanks!

As far as reliability, ford makes good products. the coyote motors are robust. They perform amazingly. No issues. The 6R80 auto transmission found in the newer mustangs have gone 8's in the quarter mile. Bone stock. If it's can go 8s it can take you to the grocery store or on any road trip with ease. You don't hear anything bad with the mustang.

John mihovitz uses OFF THE SHELF OEM FORD PARTS i.e. Engine block, cylinder heads, etc in his 5 second drag car. Yes, 5 seconds in the quarter mile. Still waiting for gm or dodge parts to even come close to that.

My 03 cobra, 14 year old car, dinosaur technology makes 750 rwhp 650rwtq on a bone stock motor. Stock heads, stock cams, stock transmission, stock rear. Svt used manly pistons and rods and forged crank on the 03 cobra. Hence the cars nick name, terminator. It was fords gift to the ford crowd. 1000hp capability with stock motor.

Are ford products reliable? I guess lol

1000 HP from a stock motor? No mods?

1000hp capable. Meaning the internals can withstand that much hp. The cobras have forged internals from the factory. 03 04 cobras only. If you read IRON FIST LEAD FOOT it explains how ford built the 03 cobra. The camaro and fire bird went out of production. Cobra dominated the street scene back in the day. If your a car guy, its an amazing book to read. Its so poular that they just did a REVISED hard book copy of iron fist lead foot.

Just to show you what I mean about robust stock motors, here is a cobra with 95,000 miles running 9's. yes thats 95K lol. Untouched motor right from ford. Nothing built. just swapped out the stock supercharger for a bigger one.

This one was filmed YEARS AGO. In my neck of the woods,NY, and it was featured in a magazine. 100% bone stock 03 cobra motor, iron block, so its heavy, with the STOCK IRS! lifting the front end off the street. Not even on a track. cobra is on the left.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNZqOvK4XAw

This one was filmed back in 03 when the car first came out and they decided to remove the stock supercharger and put twin turbos on the car. Again, 100% bone stock untouched motor from ford. 8 second car. x2c motorsports

Im also a corvette fan. I love the vette. I like the LS motor. Just showing people what I mean about what a forged motor from the factory can do.

Thank you for the clarification. You were referring to the stock block, crank, pistons and main bearings? 1000 HP from factory stock is what I was questioning.

I would like the new cars transmission as I hate the MT82. However, for the amount I would lose trading up I wouldn't swing it.

Hmm...well working at one time in an auto service facility, we saw plenty of Fords with the modular motors come in with coolant leaks from the intake manifolds, or they just were cracking altogether. A friend of mine is a the fleet superintendent for one of the largest cities in South Florida and the majority of the fleet are Fords now. He says they have gotten better, but he would outfit his entire fleet with Toyotas or Hondas if it was possible as they just dont break at all (comparably speaking). He does have Corollas and some Tacomas in the civilian fleet and they never come into the shop with problems other than for routine maintenance.

Don't bother withe the enhanced security package. The locking wheel nuts stick out way too far and look like arss. Also, the other main feature doesn't really do much. The locking center console is still made of plastic and the steering column lock won't do much more than a standard column lock.

Would you get the silver painted mesh wheels or gloss black?

My EB with the Premium Pony Package came with the silver 19" wheels:

Interestingly enough, last night I watched an American Muscle Youtube video where an Ecoboost was putting down more HP at the wheels on the dyno than my 05 Mustang GT. And it's quite possible that because I installed the Airade CAI with venturi valve in the intake tube, and didn't do a tune, it's quite possible that I actually may have lost 3-5 hp on my Mustang GT.

https://youtu.be/fsIz-RuqfNE

Of course the car is no longer street legal with a catless down 3" down-pipe, etc... but all that with a tune got him a over 400HP and a gain of 140 ft lb's of torque. Impressive!

If you didn't do a tune then you are most probably missing out on a lot of HP, especially with a cat-less down-pipe. The tune probably adds more HP than the down-pipe by itself without a tune for it.

Route246, sorry I wasn't clear. My mustang GT has the CAI with no tune. And you are correct, my GT is probably not at optimum performance, however, this leads to a larger issues. When I look at these mods I make mention to the wife and her response is "why??? you never drive the car" And she's correct. This past year the vehicle has had about 20 miles put on it. Just no time to really take the car out and "go cruisin'"...

The video I uploaded "Manny's Ecoboost on American Muscle" has everything... Tune, catless down-pipe, larger cooling unit, etc...

Mustangs Rock, I own two. An 09 and new 17 and 17 if far superior to the 09, ride, comforts etc...etc.

I have put more miles on my 62 F100 doing yard work this year.
