2019 Mazda Miata, MX-5

1700 miles
Machine Grey Metallic
2.0 liter 4 cylinder, 181 HP

This client is a referral and just got her new Miata. It’s a cool little car, Mazda really stepped up their game on the new line of MX-5’s.

Paint was very thin from the factory, averaging 2.2-2.8 mils throughout. It had some holograms on some panels, swirls, some scratches and haziness that I found surprising due to the age/newness of the vehicle.

No matter, it will be taken care of!

The ‘details’:

2BW w/SCG Pro Shampoo.
Iron X decon.
Wheels cleaned with Sonax Wheel Cleaner.
Tires cleaned with Adam’s Tire and Rubber Cleaner.
Misc. MF mitts, brushes, etc.
Clayed via Griot’s medium mitt.
Master Blaster to dry.
DeFelsko PTG.
Scangrip Lighting.

Rupes MkII 21 w/foam pads.
Griot’s Correcting Cream.

Griot’s Perfecting Cream.
Optimum Panel Wipe for final wipe down/prep for coating.
22ple Mistico Elemento Forte was the coating of choice.
22ple VM1 coated the wheels.
Engine bay trim coated with Adam’s Trim Coating.
McKee’s37 Hi Gloss Tire Shine was the tire dressing.
SCG Pro Glass Cleaner.
Metro Vacuum.
GYEON Leather Coat on interior leather.
Adam’s Interior Detailer on ‘hard’ interior pieces/Nav screen/etc.

Thanks for looking!!!

Incredible!

(I'm running out of adjectives, Scott). Lol

Very nice, bro!

Nice job Scott. That color looks great on the new body lines after your work.

Beautiful work you did. I have the same car., same Machine Gray color, except mine is an MT.

Question please. Did you notice any orange peel by any chance ? I have some on mine :( I'm a little bumm out about the orange peel.

Its good to know, that the Mazda Paint is very thin as you said, "averaging 2.2-2.8 mils throughout".

Funny thing is Mazda advertised a fascinating story about its premium coating of the Machine Gray and Soul Red for which they charge as an option for $300 (Machine Gray) and $595 (Soul Red Crystal). They boast a three-layer wet paint system.

Mazda wrote:

Machine Gray has a black layer below the reflective layer on which high-brightness aluminum flakes are aligned. Letting the jet-black pigment beneath show through the gaps between the aluminum flakes creates a lustrous metallic look that highlights the contrasts in the shadows. Likewise, a translucent red layer on top of the black and reflective layers would make it possible to create a vivid red that is deep and lustrous. But that would require four layers, including the clear top layer, and require two passes down the paint line.

Mazda also says the team refused to add a fourth layer, which would have been less environmentally friendly. More of their paint story here.

All I know is I see orange peel and now you say also that paint is very thin. SMH. I'm thinking Mazda's talk about their paint is just marketing BS.

Awesome work and pictures as always Scott!

It's a great looking little car!

You do absolutely stunning work, Scottie!

I've only seen a few of these around Tampa and do like the "hard top" look on those models.

To add to this- both these colors are actually 3-4 stage when it comes to respraying/repairing, and highly difficult to spray at that!! On top of that- the 2019 formulation of Soul Red is completely different than the 2015-2018 formulation- and currently one of the toners/tints to make the color is not available in the U.S.

I manage a collision shop at dealer that sells Mazda among a couple other brands and we have already ran into having to repair both of these colors- they are both a painters' worst nightmare. And yes, Mazda like Porsche and Tesla paint tends to be on the thin side- so for other detailers on here, be wary and be careful correcting either of these colors- the bill to just respray one of these panels is around 3-4X more expensive than respraying a normal base/clear

Thanks all! I really do appreciate the comments!!!

Yes, it did have orange peel, not severe, but it was there.

I read about their paint colors/tri-color system, or what ever they call it. It's a great color!

Wow, sad condition for a new car. Good for them the Dr. got it sorted!

Wow! As always BEAUTIFUL WORK! Love the Miatas! I had the 1st Gen and loved it! Not a very masculine sports car compared to today's Miata's. But loved it! My friend bashed the side of the car and it would cost more to fix. I no longer let friends drive my car PERIOD! But loved that Miata and so glad you brought that Miata RF to the excellence she deserved.

FYI If I were to drive the new Miata Convertible I would burn my head in about 10 minutes! Being bals has many DIS advantages!...LOL Henceforth the RF would be my choice!

As always Scott excellent work and KEEP ON ROCKING!

Stellar results as usual bro. Dang. Btw... is there a ' central location ' to read about paint systems new and or old... just curious.

Great work.
