3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

Although I've never actually tested them side by side (IE 50/50), I'd say the aggressiveness is about the same comparing the same color of each. They do feel different touching them with my hand, but on the paint it's very similar. For me they last a long time too.

I wish AG carried these!!
 
So do you ever use a 3" pad with that set-up?

So can I get the Lake Country 3" backing plate with the Lake Country 3" hydro pads? Or is that too dangerous to not have the extra 1/2" like with other set-ups?

Yep 3" LC Hydros fit and Griot's 3" pads work great as well.

Awesome, thanks! Could have used the 3" tonight while doing my wife's MDX.....I'll order them for when I do my cars :xyxthumbs:

So, have you actually used 3" pads with this set-up or just the 4"? Do you feel like you have good control, and it doesn't feel unsafe like you're going to hit the paint with the Orbital?
 
IME using a 3" GG orange pad (better used with the GG3) on the PC won't last long and they will start to tear apart...

I think he means the Griots pads which I do agree they aren't that strong.

I've tried them. 3" LC Hydros are okay, 3" Griots pads are thinner and seem not to last as long.

For me when I'm not using the 4" Hex Logics, I'm using the 3" buff and shine pads... yellow polishing and black finishing. They kinda have a similar "self centering" mount and work just as good as the Hex. FYI on these 3" pad that they're actually more like 3.25" or 3.5" than a true 3"

Honestly for me, I mostly never use the smaller than 4 pads. Just the CG 4".

Oh, about the control. Bigger pads you can kinda one arm the PC out over the hood without much thought. With the smaller pad it's easier for the PC to tip over due to the smaller pad acting as a smaller platform. Just realize you need to make sure you keep the pad against the paint and all is good. If you've got common sense then you got nothing to worry about. With that said I find it very easy to control. :D

agreed, they are thinner and they're intended to be used with the GG3. it's my fault for using them on a machine they weren't intended for (just me experimenting), just letting people know so they don't ruin them and waste money. IMO, the B&S pads (IIRC they make pads for CG's, DD, Adams, etc,) are a little better quality than the LC pads, i've never had the velcro come off or seperate. still though, they both produce great products...

Yeah and in all honesty the only reason I tried 'em was because I seen Mike P using them on a rotary for his "surgical buffing". Which is why I got them for my rotary, but have tried them on the PC too.

I agree on the B&S quality and love their 3" pads although I find myself using the 4" Hex more often.
 
Well, I just ordered the 3" BP and the 3" hydro pads....I'll let you know how they work out when I use them.

You will be fine. Thats the pad and plate combo that I use and I dont have any problems. I love how they come together as one.

I use the 3" plate and 3" pads with no problem. You want to be careful obviously. I also use the 3.25" Optimum microfiber pads with great success on the 3" plate.
 
Yup, this will just be for tight spaces. I have 5.5 inch pads for larger panels. Was doing my wife's MDX last night and there are a lot of contours on the lift gate and front bumper area where I could have really used 3" pads.

Kind of late on this response since I just traveled to India.

I was going to do the same. Basically I wanted something to work in the small front grill areas... well while I was doing that I bumped the PC housing against the bumper like 3 or 4 times. Decided then that I was going to get a 3 inch GG. To me, the housing of the PC is too big, whereas the 3 inch GG being way smaller is much more helpful in tight areas like a grill.

Thanks for the reply, I'm looking at getting a GG 6" after Christmas and was planning on doing the same thing. But I'm mainly looking at using it around the windows and flair around the wheels of my truck. I have gotten mixed response about the vibration though and one more opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
I just ordered the 3.5" backing plate with 4" ccs pads. If they are as good as the 5.5" ccs pads I'll be happy.

I haven't noticed any excessive vibration with either the 6" GG or PC or the 3 " GG.

In fact just a few days ago, I did spot treatment of marks with a 3 " GG and Blackfire polish and it worked wonderfully.

Good to know, have you tried a 3" backing plate on the GG 6"? This is the vibration I was referring too. Thanks :xyxthumbs:
