I'm not very good at posting links or don't really know if it's allowed but over on Meguiarsonline is a post by a member that 3M has proposed a buyout of the family owned company. The link he provides looks official.
Paul

The press release was posted on MOL by Meg's.

Better stock up, there should be a price increase for the buy out of Meg's.

Didn't I see a posting that 3M just acquired Edge as well? Are they just buying up the competition?

Pat.

I hope the two lines stay separate and that the Meguiar's label stays true to it's origins and quality. I love all the Meguiar's lines and I have never been a fan of most of 3Ms stuff.

3M also acquired Polyfoam Products Inc, Ligacon (filtration company), TOP-Service für Lingualtechnik, ohh and the list goes on. Check out their press releases at their site, you will see they have been very busy spending money this summer!

I agree with 67customs comment, I too love Meguiars products, their products were the first OTC (over the counter) products that gave me results that I was looking for, about 10 years ago, now I am still very demanding...lol.......
I do stay in touch with one og Meguiars National Account Reps, I could ask him whats going on and if the two will keep seperate identities.

Looks like the end user loses again !!!

Where is 3M getting all this cash?

They may be buying Meguiars with stock rather than cash. On the same note, I am guessing that 3M is much, much larger than Meguiars so they may have the cash to buy out Meguiars.

You have to remember when you think of 3M think of how much more market they cover then Meguiars. 3M makes products for the medical field, Car Care, Displays, Electrical, Dental, Stethoscopes, Window Safety, Adhesives, Fire Protection, Air Filters, paint primers, and the list just goes on....
When you think of 3M you need to think of a large Global Manufactory of many diverse products. Meaning that for them to buy Meguiars was not a big financial deal.

3M is a huge mega-corporation and its holding are far from just car care based. Since I never found their products very easy to use or more beneficial than others, hopefully they will use Megs as their chemist going forward. Otherwise it is simply, controlling the market by eliminating the competition.

I will have to disagree. They are not eliminating competition with megs. It looks as though it will be to improve a non existant retail presence. Very smart move.

From all the damned painters tape we buy! At 4 bucks a roll it's got to be a healthy markup for them! hahahaha!

There is a lot of truth to that. 3M is not known as being the lowest cost provider. They like to deal in specialty products with exclusivity so they can price them accordingly.

I have seen someone mention a non-3M brand tape similar to the painters tape but do not see it in retail stores (likely in paint supply places). 3M is a brand. Their success in retail care may be limited by their distribution methods and maybe Meg's will help with that. I hear they have great products but they are not promoting them very well.

I just seen a bunch of off brand painters tapes at my local hardware store, and they were pricey too!

:iagree: 3M is huge, and into almost every business sector in some way.

Only time will tell, lets hope they peek true to Meguiars tradition of products. :buffing:
