50 cent - 10 minute Headlight Restoration

What does the miniwax and mineral spirits do for the headlights? I am guessing just a long term sealant?

Yeah, exactly. It just gives it a nice urethane protectant. Lasts a long time. Plus, it really adds gloss. Makes them look brand new again. Using plain old sealant just doesn't protect them very well.
 
Thanks for the tip! I have two pairs of headlights to do this weekend and will try it out.

Just to be clear, I just wipe it on with a towel? I do not need to brush it on or anything?

Should it be layered?

Just use a shop towel, and some nice even swipes. You don't really need to layer it. If you try to layer it, it will probably just kinda smear it. The idea is a nice thin level layer.

The cool thing about it. Is that by mixing the mineral spirits, it gives you some play time. If it doesn't come out that good. Just take a another shop towel, and wipe it clean with mineral spirits and start over. Little bit of a learning curve...but you'll get it.

Nice job..is that clear coat failure above the light?
 
I did my headlights this weekend and used your urethane method and they came out GREAT! I was amazed at how well the urethane/mineral spirits mixture was able to hide the imperfections that I was unable to remove.

It did however take a long time to dry but was cold. How long should it take to cure?

Well, I guess it really depends on your mixture. If there's more urethane than mineral spirits it will probably dry quicker. All the mineral spirits is doing is thinning it out so you can spread it easily.

For me, it's usually dry in minutes. I'm also doing it in a heated shop, I'm sure that has a factor. To really cure...I'm not completely sure. I would imagine about 24 hours or so.

It's not my trick, just to clarify. I read it on this forum somewhere. It works great though!:dblthumb2:
