A HUGE fail of a detailing video

If he's doing $40 details perhaps that's more love than those car ever would have received. Ok, I'm really digging here...

That's hustling 101.

I think that's probably true. We tend to get a bit snobbish here; I'm sure the cars he does look way better when he is done than when he started (although they may have a lot of Mother's in the cracks and crevices).

I think what sticks in the craw of most members here is when people make videos like this and purport to be, or worse, actually think they are, expert or show-car detailers, when they are using techniques that are best described as "amateurish".

If the video was titled "How to Make Money Doing $40 Details for People Who Would Never Pay $50 to Have Their Car Detailed" perhaps this would be a different thread.

This is also why most people Dont want to pay more than $100 for a detail.

Black magic tire shine... not just for tires anymore! Also for use with wheels :)

What he did not tell you is that it works well on paint, seats, windows, all of it!

He can't give away all his trade secrets though.

holy crap in his other video he is washing the car with a brush then he proceeds to wax it and at the very end polishes with a wool pad after removing the wax residue... this is so wrong!

You would think he would know the business investing in a work truck and equipment. Looks like he just thought he could make quick money and that there wasn't much to it.

(Not going to be specific, you know why)

In the books, the word hustling comes up and it says you have to "Hustle" daily.

There was 3000 now there is 5000

(Keep Calm and you know the rest)

I only watched the wheel video. But, it sort of reminds me of myself before I started coming to AG. My way of "cleaning tires" was just pressure washing them. Then I would just add "more dressing". I just figured the tire always stayed kind of dirty.

Another crazy thing I did was I did a "Dawn wash", but I got the bottle of Dawn and squirted it all over the car, whole bottle.

Hoping there is no videos of that going around.

Setec.. you might be shocked how many potential customers Dont know the difference and thinks this looks great. He probably does the vids for SEO purposes.... and ego. I think a lot of detailers make videos purely to show off.

Yes, it's a weird vacuum that some people operate in. They self-teach themselves, get someone to pay them money for what they are doing, then decide what they have "invented" is so impressive they should show it off to the world. That overspray removal guy with the razor blade and rotary comes to mind. Perspective is really important.

After watching the first vid and reading the comments, I tended to agree. But after watching all his vids, I started to come down a good bit.

1. Not everyone is as knowledgeable (i.e. everyone starts somewhere--"somewhere" being at the bottom of the knowledge totem). I grew up learning how to wash a car with dishwashing soap, one bucket, and a household sponge; drying the car with a beach towel/terry cloth towel.

2. Considering that he's published these vids to the masses as advice, I'd wager he's simply lacking a lot of critical knowledge vs. trying to "hustle" people.

3. I checked out his website and judging by his prices, he's catering to a specific group of folks that don't have the products/tools and don't wanna pay more then $50-60 for a detail. Even though it seems weird to some, there is a huge market for that depending on where he does his business.

I personally hope someone reaches out to him and gives some very real/good advice about how to properly do things. If this is a real job for him--which it seems like it is--he could really stand to benefit from learning the right way to do stuff. He could grow his business, make more money, and do better for himself.

Arguably he already is doing stuff "the right way" for his target market.

Hey...at least he is using micro fiber :dblthumb2::dblthumb2:

Put on the wax, remove the was, then dry buff with a wool pad...

Interesting.

Not to mention... the pads he was using didn't look too clean

i hate to bash, but the brotha is just trying to make a living. yes he is lacking some knowledge in his trade. but one thing i like about this guy is that he is confident and has a great camera presence. i'm willing to bet that if this guy learned some skills and upgraded his equipment, he would be one hell of a business man. he speaks confident, but not cocky and he seeks to inform. one thing people can't seem to deny is that a brotha is very convincing when he speaks.

I agree. Although I wouldn't be caught dead doing most of the things he did in that video, what he is doing is better than what the majority of the people do to their cars.

I will say this, I'd rather have an individual wash their wheels THIS WAY a couple of times a month rather than not wash them at all and wait years for brake dust to accumulate and eat throw the wheel's finish. I have seen so many German car wheels that have been neglected for years....than you bust out the trusty P21S or Sonax wheel cleaner....and NOTHING happens because the damage has been done and now you gotta spend an hour on each wheel by hand rubbing the brake dust off with either iron x or some sort of compound.

So yeah, laugh all you want at this guy, it's still better to wash the wheels somehow as opposed to doing nothing at all.

Not a gambler myself, but speaking as a former hack, I'd wager that there are more of these type businesses, generating more $$$ than there are AGO-style detailers.
