This vehicle belongs to a girlfriend of a friend of mine. When he brought it by to see me I knew it was going to be a challenge inside and out. And then he was telling me her budget...wow, from Detailer to Magician. I ate a lot of time on this job but that happens sometimes. I know he appreciates it and he's been a good customer to me, so it is what it is.

Let's see what I was presented with:

As you can see, very heavy swirling that was on every panel and wait till you see the doors!

Oh, yes, this was a treat inside & out!

1/2 a XTRA Large Starbucks something or other got dumped here:

This one is a gouge:

OK, so I think you get the picture. Nasty, just nasty.

This is the vehicle that I ordered in the Malco Brake Off to try on. I'm looking forward to trying it again next time and allowing it to dwell longer than the instructions say to. I still have one scab on my leg from the chemical burns from that day. But, it did work.

Each wheel was cleaned with MBO and then the tires with Zep 505 and the wells with LATA.

Next the vehicle was washed by hand with DG 901 and then re-washed with IronX paste. It was then brought inside and clayed with the Speedy Prep towel.

Paint correction had to be confined to a 2 step process but it needed more. It got TB black wool + M105 + Flex 3401 followed by M205 + white B/S + flex.

Here's 2 50/50 shots:

Now, polishing these presented a unique problem: the ridge or cutout at the bottom of the door. You had to keep the door open in order to polish in that groove so you didn't hit the trim at the bottom of the door. Here's a little bit of backwoods Canadiana problem solving to keep the door open while I worked on it and put some pressure to it so the door didn't move:

Hahahaha, but guess what? It worked.

Here is the roof after both stages:

The vehicle was wiped down first with ONR and then with Eraser and then was coated with Americoat including wheels, head and tail lights, all glass except windshield and the paint. The windshield got Fly-By-30.

The interior was vacuumed, and then the stains were treated with Folex and agitated with a DA brush and then wiped with multiple white terry towels. I turned a lot of them black!! The plastic was cleaned with a magic eraser soaked with OPC. The plastic and seat material (not leather but some fake stuff) was treated to UIGP. The inside glass was cleaned with the KD cloth. The tires were shot with Opti Bond from a mini air gun. The trim was done with DLux.

AFTERS:

Scratch all gone:

Bye Bye Starbucks!

Thanks for looking. Comments appreciated

Beautiful transformation.

Nice trick to keep that door open :)

Hey Richy, that's an amazing resurrection!

You were able to get the interior carpeting that clean without an extractor?

Love it!! Fantastic! Any reason you went with M105 instead of rocks?

Nice thing you did for your friend and it looks super. I find it ironic that the girlfriend can afford a BMW but can't afford to take care of it.

Nailed it again Richy, sure exterior looks awesome, but interior work was what impressed me a lot this time. You are hired! Congratulations, mate.

In my country/culture (Brazil), we may say a 'Frog transforming into a Prince(ss)', I didn't knew a pig would achieve such status...

Awesome same, thanks for sharing.

You did an excellent job!!!

Thanks very much!

Thank you. Simple but effective. I was leaning into the Flex so I needed something to hold it secure.

Bobby, thanks my friend! I am a big fan of the DA upholstery brush. I was asked where to get it on this thread at L2D, and I got it here, but I'll be damned if I could find the link??

Mark, yes...I am trying to use it up, hehehehehe.

I know! I only hope she tries to keep it up now.

I actually wanted to make the reference of being a turd and changing into something else, but figured the AG nannies wouldn't like it. A frog is being too kind to the condition of this one!

Top job as usual Richy ! That was a tough one .
Thanks very much!

You mentioned that the car needed more compounding, but the situation wouldn't allow for it. I like the fact that you kept it "real" by posting this picture. You're not trying to hide anything. Major props, Richy! :props:

Beautiful work, as usual, my northern friend!
Thanks very much; I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Very nice!!! Beautiful work!!
Thanks man, it means a lot to me for you to say.

Aha, my friend, it's too bad you didn't live closer and could know me in person. What you see is what you get. My work is no different. Yes, I wish I could have been paid for spending longer on the paint on this car, but that was definitely not the case here! It was as good as I could get it in a reasonable amount of time.

However, my Camaro driving friend....wait till you see what I've done (and HOW I've done it) with a black SS Camaro that's in my garage at this very moment (no such restraints on this car!). I was so excited, I called Corey at 10 pm to tell him!!

+1 Very refreshing to see people keeping it real. We've all seen your work and know your ability to make paint Flawless. You're the man Richy. Learned a couple of things from you my short time here on AGO, so thank you and keep the posts comin!

Looks Great! Not sure which is more impressive, the interior or the exterior? Besides the DA brush what products did you use on the carpet? What products did you use on the interior?

amazing job richy
Thank you my friend. I've been delighted to see how busy your shop is with the pics on FB that you've shown. Continued success to you!

Thanks very much! As long as there is paint to work with and the time to do it, there is a lot that can be done. Sometimes one or both is not there. Even so, I was trying to impart that at a 90% correction level, it looked significantly better than before. Now, factor in the protection from the AC, and you've got a paint job that's going to look that good for a while.

Thanks! I have been really impressed with the cleaning combo of Folex (can be purchased by the gallon at HD in the area where they rent the carpet cleaning machines) in combination with the DA carpet cleaning brush. I have tried to find it here on AG (where I bought it) but I'll be damned if I can find it right now.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with Nick. The reason I couldn't find it is that they had it buried (IMO) under "Porter Cable and Accessories". OK, to my Canadian logic, that is not where I would have looked for it. But here is the link and I have suggested to Nick that they add an additional link to the "interior cleaning" section.
Porter Cable 7424 Carpet & Upholstery Brushes

BTW, I use the white one out of the 4 they have for sale. To give you an idea of how well this works, my father in law has an Impala that he spilled red wine on the tan carpet mat. It had been there for about a week. Using a liberal amount of Folex + the white DA brush + white terry towels, I was able to completely eliminate that stain! And quickly I might add.

So I used in addition to above, what I refer to as a knock-off AG pad. Not to be confused with AutoGeek, AG stands for AutoGlym. They used to sell a pad called the Interior cleaning pad. It works much better than it should just looking at it. You spray cleaner directly on it or the surface and agitate. It foams up the cleaner and really helps remove stains. AG no longer sells it but there were some knock off ones around that I also bought. They are just as good and in fact better b/c on 2 of them you can put your hand inside of it. PM me for who may (or may not) still sells them. I used Optimum Power Clean as the cleaner, cut 4:1. As good as the AG pad is, it did not remove all the stains. When they picked it up, there were a few that I did not want to be more aggressive on fearing for the removal of the trim dye. They insisted that I do something more, so with ample warning that any dye removal was their problem, not mine, I did what I consider the most aggressive way to remove a stain from plastic: Soak (and I mean soak) a magic eraser (I buy them in bulk from China) with OPC and have at it. Be very careful. It will remove more but you risk removing dye too. It did remove the rest of the stain here and they were satisfied. (No, it didn't remove any dye either).

For the last step, the plastic and seats were protected by UIGP, Ultima Interior Guard Protection or whatever it stands for. It is amazing stuff. It actually makes leather (real leather, not the fake stuff in this X3) feel softer. My customers love it!

Hope that helps.

Sorry for the late replies, my chest infection is getting worse.

Very well done Richy! I've never been a huge fan of X3s but I would drive this one :)
