Absolutely no business coming my way!! WHY?

This work is like contracting to me. People need to see the work to actually make their own opinion. Its a craft like contracting. IE person gets their home worked on and I guess without being sexist, a man would look at it and see if it was done right, a woman would wonder if they are reputable and no problems are around. Not being sexist but just look at it that way with the detailing industry. Person gets their car worked on and they meet friends and they talk about who did it and then they will get their car worked on. I do work for myself and friends and rarely others. When they see my work they check over everything. I think the social media thing is good, but I think its more a face to face interaction that helps too. People ask questions and im pretty knowledgeable about 95 percent of issues in the industry. They would be more willing to trust you with their money too.

Try joining a local Chamber of Commerce that holds monthly or weekly breakfasts or lunches. It's all about networking and working the crowd in the room. Have a car set up 1/2 detailed down the middle to show for comparison etc. Not to sound cocky but I'm arrogant about my detailing and I'm not afraid to tell someone.I'm only a part timer so I can pick and choose what I want to do.JMHO

I also hate honestly the cheapo guys that undercut our work. People go for the price not understanding how work like this is done correctly. If you feel your work is good, I would show them why a significantly lower priced place is bad.

This is exactly why I love being a weekend warrior hobbyist. For me it's relaxing and satisfying without the stress. I hope things turn around.

Passion:

Detailing for money is like any other profession. Their are people who are dedicated to it and their are people who are here today and gone tomorrow.

Mike Phillips is a great role model as is Renny Doyle and Todd Cooperider. These are people who have dedicated themselves to being the best at what they do, it just happens in their cases to be detailing. If I were to ask them to define in one word that drives them I'm willing to bet money in Vegas that word would be "Passion".

They are passionate about what they do everyday, day in and day out.

Bob McKee is obviously passionate about the business he has built and continues to build.

Though this is not my primary form of income, I have always been passionate about car care. To whatever level that may be.

I started as a warehouse 3rd shift order picker in 1988 and went into sales in 1991. I'm proud to say as a 100% commissioned sales person I have only been with 3 companies since 1988.

I've had many relationships with good bosses and not so good bosses. Remember this, for the most part, "those who sell sell and those who can't sell manage those who sell LOL"

I'm fortunate to currently have a great boss who is al teast as passionate as I am, maybe more. I told him the other day my bp has gone up 10 points since he started and I'm not sure that's a bad thing!

That being said, the one thing the good ones and the bad ones have always said about me is I'm passionate about what I do. "sometime too passionate, oh well, it comes with the territory"

So that's the best advice I could ever give anyone, be passionate about what you do. Everyday is a new day and an opportunity to be better at life, work and your relationships.

YES! I have often debated this with myself. Would I get teh same enjoyment out of detailing if I had to rely on it for my livelihood? I dont think so. Doing some cars here and there for supplimental income would work for me, but I dont think full time I would enjoy it.

Visit Wix free website builder. Its a start (I am working on one myself) and not to hard to figure out.

I believe life is all about Karma.

I just took a $300,000 piece of packaging business from a competitor yesterday, and truly that had a lot to do with it.

And I agree with you Frank whole heartedly and especially in any service related business.

He's in Orlando and I'll be there all day tomorrow in meetings, may be I'll give him a call and have him detail my "piece of "***" Genesis. LOL

custmsprty i honestly dont give a f*ck what you say youre a piece of #### and none of your answers have been helpful in the slightest. cool genesis bro that things a piece of ####. had your answers been kind, helpful, inspirational, PROFESSIONAL, I wouldnt have to treat you as such. from the start youve been nothing but nasty towards me. go fu*k yourself.

Yeah its going to be tough getting customers with that attitude. I was going to suggest it might be better to start things up part time before dropping all that cash and jumping in the deep end. Basically just try to get a bit of spending cash doing a car every weekend for a couple years until you get a customer base going. Then if you are making too much money to keep doing your day job go ahead full steam at that point.

I'm sorry - but it drives me nuts when people (in this case the OP) have NO CONCEPT of basic sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization and how to use a period. And then piss on the people trying to help them with their issue!

I am by no means a perfect grammar/spelling/typing poster myself. However I still try and form sentences with capitals and periods.

On topic - several people gave great advice in this thread on how to jump start a business. It is never easy to be successful.

Saw cussing. Scrolls down and sees: custmsprty likes this.

You devil, you...

He's frustrated, so it's understandable some well-meaning toughness may have come across as bitching/mocking.

OP - Don't take it to heart. These gents mean well with their experiences on the ups & downs of business and life in general. Best of luck to you.

How do you ban yourself?

I'm so glad you asked this question Ron because it enables me use this question as a teaching moment.

Technically - we that is AutogeekOnline.net and more specifically our Moderators NEVER ban anyone.

A person BANS THEMSELVES when THEY break forum rules.

See how simple it is?

If you don't break the rules you don't ban yourself. If YOU break the forum rules then YOU will have been the law breaker and all our Moderators do is enforce the rules. Forum rules are simply boundaries. Stay inside the boundaries and there won't be any issues. Kind of like driving a car. If the speed limit is 65 mph and you drive 80 mph and a Police pulls you over and gives you a ticket, it's YOUR FAULT for breaking the law not the Police's problem for enforcing the law.

All GREAT forums have clearly stated forum rules because believe it not - people like boundaries. They like to now what they can and cannot do.

After coming to AutogeekOnline.net from MeguiarsOnline.com in 2009 and brought the forum rules I wrote for MOL to AGO. Took about a year to get them posted but due to a few problem members that no longer post here they were eventually implemented and the forum has GROWN and FLOURISHED ever since.

Another thing great forum rules do is keep the forum free from the riffraff. I've been posting this for years and here goes again.

Generally speaking, people join forums for one of three reasons.

1. To ask questions and get help.
2. To answer questions and help others.
3. To cause problems.

It's this third category of people that after joining, they tend to reveal their nefarious purpose with in about a dozen posts.

As the saying goes

This isn't our first rodeo

For seasoned forum veterans like myself and our Moderators, when a new forum member starts causing problems we pick up on it right away and then that person goes on what's called the Babysitting List. This is a list you don't want to be on. Once you're on this list everyone behind the scenes is watching and reading every post you make. You are given enough rope to hang yourself and historically any person that joins for reason number #3 will sooner or later break enough of the forum rules to have successfully banned themselves.

And that's how a great forum works.

I've been posting to this thing we all know as the "Internet" since 1994 that I can prove. That's 22 years. Not as long as some but longer than most. You could call me a forum guy. I love forums. I belong to other forums and I've owned a few of my own. I know what makes a forum good and what makes a forum bad and bad members make for a bad forum.

AGO is growing. With all our TV exposure we have more and more lurkers coming to the forum from the TV world. When they get here they're going to find a FUN, friendly and above all helpful forum made up of high caliber people that conduct themselves in a professional manner. Anyone that doesn't fit this criteria falls into category #3 and as such these people are never a problem but simply a bump in the road on this Internet highway. What our Moderators do is maintain a smooth road.

Thanks for asking the question and I think everyone reading this will agree that AGO is a great forum because we have great forum members as well as great forum rules and seasoned Moderators that know how and when to enforce the rules.

And just to note....

For those that don't know where to locate the forum rules, they can be found in these sections of the forum group hierarchy,

Introduce Yourself

Company & Forum News Headlines

Off Topic

And of course, the Forum Rules threads in all of the above forum groups are Stickies. If you're a newbie to discussion forums this means the thread is "stuck" or "pinned" to the top of the group. It never drifts down the list of threads on the first page or disappears into oblivion on other pages in the group. Thus it's easy to find.

And here's a direct link.

How can you be banned and still post?

He will certainly be banned for having 2 accounts.

Correct.

It's against the forum rules to have more than one account. There's ZERO good reasons to have two accounts and in most cases anyone that creates more than one account is doing it for nefarious reasons.

If a person creates more than one account and they are caught they will have banned themselves instantly.

From the forum rules...

Forum Rules

11. Only one account per member! The only conceivable reason for multiple accounts would be for fraudulent activity. You will be banned for this action immediately.

Good forums are made up of good people. Sooner or later the trouble makers expose themselves and are simply shown the door.
