I have had a horrible dark spot in the garage near the door due to a beam that blocks a lot of light from the less than adequate 2 sockets that I put 200 watt equivalent CFLs into.

In documenting this process, I shot the following pictures under full manual mode so that a side by side comparison could be made after the new lights were installed. No post-processing lighting or exposure adjustments have been done. This means that there are over and under exposed images ... it was done on purpose.

Here is the dark area of the garage that needs to be fixed - it causes a lot of issues when trying to apply product or ONR washing.

My first attempt was with two 2x4' florescent lamps, however they did not produce nearly enough light, so it was back to the hardware store to get the biggest brightest florescent they had: a dual 110 watt high output 8' unit. To say this thing is huge is an understatement, the bulbs barley clear the ceiling in the garage as seen here:

The unit is supposed to fire down to -20F, so it should be good to go during the winter months as well. Assembly was under way, and a plan was put together on how to mount the light.

Upon reading the directions there were some strong recommendations that the unit be chain mounted if it would be operating in conditions > 89 degrees (check) and if it was mounted to a highly insulated surface (check). I had not counted on that (had been planning on surface mounting), and had very little clearance to work with due to the garage opener track. Onward!

The chains mounted into drywall anchors with washers to hold on the chains

Assembly done, you can see the tight clearance with the garage door opener:

So bright!

This is exactly what I wanted!

I managed to pull off this entire project alone, however, I will share that working with 8' long fixtures and bulbs in a confined space is rather challenging. My wife was rather impressed with how much brighter the garage is now.

This will be perfect for enhancing my ability to see defects to correct

I realized as I was posting this I do not have exactly the same perspective before/after but my car is in the garage all prepped and waiting for wax tomorrow, so I will post a proper perspective picture tomorrow.

Wow. What a difference!

And props to you for doing it solo, I can imagine it being a difficult task. Maybe get us some pictures of a car under the lights.

:iagree:working with 8ft fixtures by your lonsome can be a pain in the arse! Great job in creating some much needed light !!!! Once your done waxing that car come on over and hang a few fixtures in my shop I need a little more light myself!:D

Nicely done! Wrestling those 8' fixtures solo sure is a pain, but they're very well worth it.

That said (and I hate to bring this up), 32W T8 bulbs on an HO ballast would actually have been brighter than T12HOs and consume a lot less electricity. I've got the T8s in my garage, and T12HOs under my carport and in my fab shop/storage barn and the lighting is way better in the garage than in the other two locations. Just throwing that out there for future reference.

:props:

Nice work Bill! Wow, what a difference! I am looking to do some lighting in my garage as well so this thread was good timing. Jim has recomended the luma link system and I'm thinking thats the one for my situation.

Big difference! Did you put in T-8's? I'm gonna get some of those this summer.

Bill not only can you take awesome pictures your write up installing new lighting should also be posted in This Old House series . What was the cost of the lamps and fixtures .

I LOVE EIGHT FOOTERS!

Pricey, yea. A hassle to put up, yup.
Results...PRICELESS.

I have 5 or those puppies in a 2 car garage...did I say I love 8 footers?

Excellent upgrade :props:

Working with 8' lights solo is a real pain but they are more than worth the hassle.

Thanks for the write up.

I had 2 8 ft banks and then added a second set adjacent to the original but they run across the garage and it helped a lot.

I would like to have more light on the sides but I have a challenge to straddle the steel beam plus needing outlets to attach more both lights (one on each side of the garage). I would have to use the second outlet where the garage door opener plugs in with a outlet expander too.

I see some mount lights at an angle on the wall but not sure if that would be better.

It's not really that hard to run conduit, so you could probably solve that problem without a major hassle.

Depends how far down the wall you mount them. Personally I find that keeping them mounted overhead gives sufficient light, but having them down the side would probably be better. I just don't have the wall space to support it.

I have some 4 footers what do I need to us to put extesion cords on the ends of them. I do not want them on all the time.

Wow what a difference! Do they make units like that so you can plug them into the outlet or do you have to hard wire it like a ceiling fixture?

The specific lights that I bought were cord wired, though you can do that on your own as well.

Thanks, the fixture was $69, the lights were $12 /per, and with mounting hardware, it was around $96-98.

Wow, must be like having your own super nova in the garage :props:

Nice job, what a huge difference!

I am getting ready to put up some T5 HO lights myself. I want to be able to tan in my garage. LoL

wow you have the same bulkhead I had. Nice look

Very nice! I need to upgrade the lighting in my garage but I have been putting it off. I don't really want to spend the money at this point.
