how many passes do u need to make on a standard two by two area to go through the whole diminishing process and get the best finish?

Depends on the car paint,it could be hard or soft.

Typically 6-8 section passes. Wipe, then inspect your work.

nice thanks, its tough in the garage everything looks great, i cant see the swirls and what not unless its in direct sunlight. what do u guys do about that? i tried a halogen but it didnt do much

I agree.

6-8 passes using good technique and you should have worked the product well enough to stop and inspect.

With quality products it's less of an issue than I'd say most people make it to be. With some products it's probably vital and then you're stilling going to see micro-marring.

:)

many diminishing polishes refine to basically clear which is a visual indcator;
For DA I find this starts arounf the 3rd pass with load, is about done on the fourth and the last 2 passes are typically lower speed and load to finish with the abrasive at its finest level..
For rotary seems to accelarate the breakdown to perhaps 2 passes to break down and 1-2 lighter passes to refine..IME...
The rate and characteristics of the polish throught e transition also varies a lot, some break down very quickly then have long run time, others seem to break down more slowly and dry up more abruptly..

Try HD POLISH+ and you won't have to worry about abrasives diminishing and it will finish just as good or better.
