Has anyone used coupon services?!?!!? I have been asking around for quotes and they are pretty high! Has anyone here used coupons and if so did it produce a significant rise in business?!?!? Thanx,

B&B

I haven't used a coupon service but I have made my own coupons using the postcard option at vistaprint. It's cheap (like $5 for 100) and I throw them in mailboxes and under wipers.

What were some of quotes you got from the distribution services?

For local online only coupons I saw $250 a month! I've hit up a local distributor and they won't get back to me for some reason.

I was actually thinking the vista post card method last night (saw it in one of those "EVERYTHING IS FREE emails they send every week lol)- but I don't think I will put them on cars - only because I never was a fan of someone doing that to me.

Did it produce any extra work for you?

I don't put them on cars too often but once in a while I will pull them out on my way into the mall or something. It's nice having the postcards though because I can send them to past customers as a little reminder. They say "Free Exterior Wash 1 Month from Full detail" so basically I go back a month later and do a quick ONR wash.

As for vistaprint...I love those guys. As annoying as their emails are (once a week? more like every other day) I do have a bunch of free stuff from them. T shirts, lawn signs, pens, business cards. You get the idea. I tried to use the option where they send the postcards to addresses they have on file but it wouldn't work for my area.

Check out groupon.com, i've heard good things about them.

Cool man, I'll check out groupon.com That's a great idea about the free basic cleaning after a full detail - should be cake to clean. Vista print is good stuff - think they get paid with the ridiculous shipping costs, but still good deals. Here in Middle Tennessee we have a thing called the Smart Card - a $10 or $15 card that produces recurring discounts when used throughout the year..... I may see how much that costs to get on the card.

Thanks for tossin some info into the thread - was hopin someone had tried the printed coupon services..... I may be the guinea pig on that one! If I do choose to advertise that way this year I will definitely let everyone know how it goes.

You should be careful with Groupon or livingsocial. I sold over 600 car washes on Groupon.com and over 1300 on livingsocial (South Beach Auto Spa Deal of the Day | Groupon Houston)
Make sure you can handle that traffic, and when they come, they will come. I promote my business thru: yelp.com, yahoo.com, google.com, mailout. My main promotion is location, location, location.

Actually, I recently went with a buddy of mines company called couptopia.com. They're online coupons. He ran 50% off a sedan detailing. They kept 25% of the total sales. I ran it over the winter twice just to get some extra cash. The coupons sell for only two days. Worked out great. First time I got a $1300 check, and the second time it was for $1800. it brought a LOT of new faces to my shop. Pretty cool. Worked for me! :xyxthumbs:

I liked this method cause they pay for themselves. Instead of other places like ValPak who cost like $400-$800, and who knows if someone will actually use them.

Today my feature on Groupon went out and I have had 55 bite so far and that is only in 3 hours! I love this type of promoting! I have had many other people that have called in after looking at the my website being refereed form the Groupon site that have scheduled too!

How does the groupon work as far as pricing goes? Are you guys offering 50% off with the groupon?

Basically they are doing my Level One service ($150.00) for $69.00 I profit $40.00 off of that they get the remaining $29.00 it seems way up on their earnings but honestly as of right now I have made $2560.00 they will break up the payment in 3 payments first payment the day after the feature second payment 30 days after that and last payment 30 days after the second...

I'm in no position to do any coupons / groupons, but i was interested in how groupon worked and ran across this thread

it's worth mentionining that just the other day in the my local groupon was a startup mobile wash service. they were offering an on-site wash of 2 cars for $35 (had to book 2 cars at a minimum). it was normally like twice that much according to their website (which was more focused on the mobile wash then detailing)

Checked the next day and they had sold about 150 which worked out to over $5000 in total sales. so on a rough estimate from what rovetherockies mentioned (where you get 58% of the sale), I'm guessing they may actually pocket $3000 approximately

Edit: I also took note of some spelling errors on their webpage. Yes I'm nit picking, but the point is, check your webpages / advertising materials carefully! A friend of mine noticed also without me mentioning it.

That is on the higher end of the pay scale with Groupon they like to get 50/50 Check out my site @ www.crownkote.com

I had a rep. from Groupon call us a month or so ago, said a fixed detailing shop ran an ad with them the previous month and sold over 700. So naturally I took a good look at it.

The fixed detailing shop ran a wash and wax ad for $25.00, $40.00 off their regular price. They sold 783 of these! A whopping total of $19,575! Pretty darn good for a two day coupon deal.

I asked for a breakdown of costs if I ran with a similar deal. Of the $25.00 profit Groupon would keep half of that, leaving my company with $12.50 per coupon sold. If I sold 783 of them we'd make out with $9,787.50.

So I did some math and told the guy he was nuts. After you figure in gasoline, wax, soap, supplies, tire shine, man hours involved, window cleaner, etc etc etc.....in the end you lose your rear.

Then factor in the time involved for a one or two man team. Even estimating that a wash and wax would take one hour, that's 783 hours to complete the coupon order. That's 19 and a half weeks working 40 per to complete them all. Almost half a year for less than $10,000.

You may be able to structure a better deal and improve upon what I laid out above, but don't let the initial money sway you into a deal without looking at the whole picture. It's also worth noting that just because the folks who buy these coupons use you once for the coupon deal, it doesn't mean they'll be returning. They're on sites like Groupon for a reason.

You do make a very good point there... I set my max @ 200 with the rep and got him to give me 60/40 I do realize that it is a loss but In all honesty I am a one man show and the supplies that it takes to do what I am doing will cost me about 6.00 each car so I am profiting 34.00 each vehicle... The other thing about it is you can up sell! So far I have about 500.00 in up-sell just because of vehicle size! so it makes up for it in my case... You do need to analyze everything before jumping in...

So basically what you're saying is, your doing your service that usually costs customers $150, for $40?

Yes. I know that it doesn't sound great but the key to it is your demographics... My L1 $150 rate is for smaller cars like Jetta's, Passat's, A4's, Cobalts, Accords, etc... The rate goes up from there... The Groupon states this basically so anything bigger costs more on top of the Groupon and the subscribers are encouraged to contact me before buying for an accurate quote on their vehicle size... So they know in advance...

The other up side is for instance I had a customer come by today to check out my "outfit" he drives a Triumph TR8 he bought the Groupon and while we were talking I up-sold him to a L3 and mild paint correction so on top of the $40 I am making from the Groupon I am now making an additional $400 or so...

It does have it's advantages if used properly... Here in Colorado a lot of people drive SUV's and that is a major up-sell just for the L1 then you convince them to go to the L2 you are looking at an additional $100.00 Headlights out here are all yellow and road beaten you sell them on a resto they spend another $50.00

I am using it to get people in the door and then you convince them to go big or go home... lol...

It is all in the marketing strategy

I've heard alot of good things about groupon, but we just ran two features in two major cities around us and total only sold 21 groupons. We offered wash/wax services for $30 not sure if the timing was just bad as its just starting to feel like spring here in New England, or maybe the fact that it snowed when our feature ran. It just wasn't as successful as we we're hoping. We plan on doing another one in a month or so and I will be talking to our rep to see if maybe they can swing the percentage our way a bit more. Maybe its just the service it seems like the bigger the service the better off the feature does, but then I'd be concerned about upsell profits. Guess this is where trial and error will come into play.

I would probably say the biggest killer to your Groupon was the fact that it snowed... People were thinking in the now not the future... Mine hit when we were having a great weather streak and the weather has jumped around a lot since then...

What is your normal price for the wash and wax?
What was the % off on the groupon?
What was your % of the cut?

Those are the big questions that came into play with mine.

Normal price on the L1 is $150
54% off was the Groupon
My cut was 60% (Wish it were a bit bigger but that will be for the next one...)

We are talking about doing just our Exterior package for the next one that starts at $65.00 and goes up to $85.00 We will do a 50% Groupon and from there we are hoping on trying to get 70% out of Groupon. We have done the math on the price to do a single car and it is between $5.00-10.00 each so if we did the Groupon say @ the basic it would be $32.50 take out 30% that leaves us with $22.75 take out supply @ $7.00 (average) that leaves us with $15.75 profit multiply that by say 200 sold that is $3150.00 and put a cap on the date valid through to say 3 months you have just made quite a bit for the short amount of time it takes to do a wash and wax... Then you talk them into adding the interior for say $50.00 there is more profit or maybe adding the headlight resto for $50.00 there is even more...

Keep your spirits up and trust me things will go from there...

Currently I am working on getting to the local car clubs and giving them a discount of about 25% to do a paint correction or "Show Car Shine" so that will be a good thing for me I think...
