Hi all.

Some of you had followed a few of the dog related threads I had going where I followed "My Girl Jack's" last year of life, and then "My Boy Kinzer". Kinzer was on death row when I first got him after he attacked a little girl in his previous home. Sadly, Kinzer couldn't be turned around with his tendency to attack people and had to be put to sleep. While Kinzer and I made huge strides, I'm talking some serious change for the good, his vicious streak overpowered the changes we had made and he had to go to "Rainbow Bridge" with all the other dogs that had passed on.

I don't typically wear my problems on my sleeve, but when it comes to loving a dog and then loosing that dog nothing tears my heart up worse than that. It's been a tough year for that with a lot of heartbreak here in "Tuscaroraville" ;)

I got this boy, "Colt" a few weeks ago and we're bonding slowly.

Colt is a purebred dachshund who was born with no tail. Nobody seemed to want him because he had no tail. I think it makes him uniquely one of a kind and gives him loads of character. The best dog groomer I have ever met, Amey at "Posh Fur" in Dallastown PA. was kind enough to allow me to re-home Colt so that Colt and I could both be very happy.

Amey was the only person who could cut "My Girl Jack's" toenails without having Jack scream bloody murder, she's an awesome groomer and a dear friend.

With all that being said, I got a new best friend and wanted to share a short video of "My Boy Colt" showing off some of his newly learned skills.

Thanks for looking. TD

cute dog Dave!

congrats on the new friend!

I'm very happy for both of you. You needed each other.

Thanks guys!! It's been fun so far. Josh, Colt and I are going to do some catfishing today. Wait til Colt sees a catfish that weighs twice as much as he does. (I hope anyways) I'll try to grab a video or a few photos.

Have a great day guys!!

haven't heard from you in a while Dave...glad to see that you are still on the forum. So very sorry to hear abt Kinzer. hope you will be able to keep Colt good luck.

I got a little girl just like him. She is awsome but as soon as she gets outside, her nose takes over and she will not obey comands. It fun to see her search for stuff, haha.
Congrats to you both!

Wow that was fast!

I thought you were going to wait a little before a new dog, after Kinzer. I Love dachshunds he is a cute little dog, looks like he loves attention. Hopefully you will have many years with little Colt.

I bet Colt would love her, she is full grown now.

That's awesome Dave!!

The best of luck and friendship to you and your new pal!

My wife and I added 3 rescue dogs to our family over the past two years. They now have a great home, lots of love and attention, and live the life of Riley! :props:

There are so many great dogs out there needing a great home, I think I want to wait for a while but then I get home to find that companionship element is missing. A dog lover just has to have a dog I guess.

As far as training dogs goes, you just have to go into it with an energy that the dog will see as strength and want to follow. Calm assertive energy is the only thing they'll naturally follow. Throw in any other energy, whether it be anger, frustration, passive posture, abusive, fearful etc. and the dog will see you as weak and he/she will assume the leadership roll.

You can fear a dog into doing tricks for you if you're the type to do so, but when you get your energy right and establish the leadership roll over your dog, with good timing concerning his/her behavior and the resulting action they see from you such as "Command (once only) from you - the right action from the dog - praise at the right time from the leader (you) and the dog will understand that he/she has done the right thing and is pleasing you."

When the dog sees you as the leader, it's sole purpose in life will be to please you, and to eat. If your timing is off even a little when you praise the right action from the dog, he/she won't understand why you are giving the praise. That is...the dog will not associate the praise with the action you commanded from him or her.

Once the dog figures out the fact that you are giving commands to it and that you expect an action from it, and you have taught it sufficiently what that action should be, and your praise timing is spot on, and you are the pack leader, you'll begin to see your dog bend over backwards to do whatever it is that you want it to do for you.

At this point, you and the dog have to practice when the dog is focused on working with you, seemingly about 20 minutes a day at first. You need to be able to see (through the dog's body language) when the dog begins to loose interest in what's going on and then stop on a happy and successful command = obedient reaction note before he/she quits responding.

Stopping on a happy note will fortify the dog's interest in working toward the same goal the next time you begin the work. He/She will associate the work session with success and happiness.

If you work the dog past it's point of interest or ability to focus on the exercise at hand, and stop on a note of failure, he/she will associate the exercise as being a drag or something it's really not interested in doing again, it won't be fun for the dog so he/she may be reluctant to work next time.

You really need to build on each training session through having the right energy, command, praise timing, keeping the dog's interest while working together and setting the entire work session up as something the dog loves to do by keeping the work session short and stopping on a good and happy note.

In all reality, the dog just does what a dog does, you are the one in training.

Anyway...Colt had his first run in with a fish yesterday and I caught it on video and wanted to share it here.

Fun stuff for sure. Colt isn't one of those Foo Foo Dachshunds, he's a dirty dog adventurer just like his new daddy.

Thanks for looking, TD

She's a beauty for sure. Colt is great with other dogs and with kids too, I too bet he'd love her.

Sorry to hear about your other two dogs, Dave. But what a great new beginning for you and Colt. He's the perfect size for you, too. I wish you both many years of happy partnership. And I didn't know you were a dog whisperer. So many talents for one guy.

Awesome vids. Best wishes for you and Colt. Thanks for the tips also.
