Another what coating choice (two metallic black cars)

Here’s where I gotta disagree. I don’t think Yvan is as bad as people make him out to be but there is a lot of double speak and contradictions in his former and current videos. As someone that details for money I can’t trust a lot of their products, especially when it comes to durability claims. I put them in the same boat as Adam’s whose products that I have used I’ve liked. But, both companies have outrageous durability claims and if someone is paying damn near $1000 I need to be sure that the product I’m applying will consistently get the results that are promised.

Let’s take Ceramic Gloss and Quick Beads. For both products Yvan has said that you can get between 3 and 12 months of durability. Trusted detailing brands; CarPro, ADS, Gyeon, etc. all mention that their sealants can get between 3-6 months of durability (I’ve seen this in the real world from multiple brands) and their spray on sealants can get up to 3 months of durability. These are tried and true products from these companies yet DIY comes along and their claims are double everyone else yet no one seems to ever actually achieve close to what they promise.

Let’s look at DIY’s 5 year coating and why I don’t trust it. I’ve tried coatings from several brands and the coatings that seem to have the ability to truly get around 5 years have one thing in common, they’re all high solids coatings. P&S Legend & Stout, ADS Quartz Pro and CCI Advanced (my personal premium option) all fall into this category. The ceramic content is much higher than your typical coating and you’ll find that they’re all very viscous and syrupy for lack of a better word. They go on thick and are a bit grabby to remove although I’m finding the newer products are making the leveling step much easier. I don’t think the DIY 5 or 8 year coatings fall into the high solids category. I think ADS Quartz is right at the threshold for being a high solids coating and ADS still only promises 3+ years of durability. Numbers like that I can trust. 5 and 8 years I can’t.

Brands geared towards professional use durability claims that describe their effective coating life which is a measure of how long you should expect the coating should perform at a high level and then you should start to see a tapering of it’s hydrophobics and gloss. Consumer focused brands like Adam’s, McKee’s and I’d add DIY to this list seem to use durability rating that measure how long a coating lasts until it’s completely gone which is deceptive in my opinion.

A bit longwinded but my two cents on the issue.

I will put this out there. I used the ADS Pro coating. ADS claims it is a 5 year coating and a high solids coating. I can confirm the high solids as applicators will need to be swapped out frequently. From a durability stand point, the coating was done for in 18 months. I even let DJ know this to he knows that maybe it could use a tweak.

ADS Quartz was doing fairly well for me at 1 year. I did not test it as long as Quartz Pro but it did alright. Quartz also has better hydrophobics.

ADS Phobic was sent to me but I have had inconsistent issues with it. Easy to use for sure but it has been inconsistent with its performance on the panels I have applied to it on the daily driver.

P&S Legend was another that just didn't perform that well. A pain in the ass to apply as well. Glad they moved on from this coating. Honestly there coatings have not been that great.

Thick is not always a good thing. I have spoken to a chemist and they stated that this could lead to the coating not being as flexible and could also lead to durability issues with the panels flexing with temperature differences. This could be why i had issues with ADS Quartz Pro.

At times I am here thinking that it is hard to beat the tried and true brands such CarPro as they have been doing this longer.

This kind took away from the purpose of this thread but I figured why not share my experience with ADS.

So your now saying Gyeon coatings over ADS

I didn’t say that either. Sharing my experience with these coatings. Everyone is going to have different results.

Out of DIY, Quartz, and Mohs, which is most likely to give me 3 years well maintained? Still not sure about that Clean by PIA that Klasse Act recommended ;) I kid

Adding a third car to the mix. My in laws have a red Chevy Equinox. Means one bottle of even DIY coating won’t go for all three.

Coming back to Phobic. How’s it appearance wise (still want the MINI to look as good as possible). I’d definitely have enough to do all of them with it

Just as a reference, I have the primer coatings for Carpro, Gyeon, and DIY App. I have the panel prep for Carpro, Gyeon, and ADS.

Well if you want to stay with the same primer that would be Carpro Lite or cancoat.

I had good success with gyeon primer with cancoat and a bunch of sealants. I just use 2 drops on a 5 inch pad per section.

Never used essence very much and now i have Labocosmetica's fiero. It tested fine too with the few sealants i have. They bond fine. I never waited for fiero to setup/cure, whatever you call it.

This is rather disappointing to hear. I just purchased the "regular" ADS Quartz coating to see how it compared to Pure EVO and Mohs EVO. I hope I can get at least 24 months out of it like I have the Gyeon products.

Back on topic, even if I'm a little late to the party.

If you are looking for durability and ease of use as your top two criteria, I've found Gyeon Mohs EVO to be the leader from the coatings I've tried. So far, I'm at nearly 24 months on Mohs EVO on my wife's car and it still looks and behaves like a fresh coating. It is the easiest to apply coating I've ever tried.

Another worth-while contented has been CarPro's CQUK 3.0. I've gone 36+ months with it on cars that have sat outdoors 24/7 and only got washed every couple months. At one point every car in our family fleet wore CQUK, some of them more than once. The only thing I don't like about it is the long flash time. Some people really like this and it makes it more friendly. To me, it slows me down. Still a great coating either way.

Still odd that you have such long flash times with CQUK. It rainbows almost immediately for me.

Difference in humidity? Desert and pacific coast could affect times right?

the DIY was easy to use and I have the prep stuff so I just ordered some 8 year. I probably have just enough to do the Navigator and Equinox. Once I’ve done those, I’ll decide what to do with the MINI.

I think the humidity has a lot to do with it. I apply my coatings in 60~70F weather. In the Spring, that can mean humidity levels are likely 65% or higher depending on what the recent weather has been like.

I've found CQUK the product will start to slowly rainbow flash after about 2~3 minutes, but that doesn't mean it's ready to remove. At that point it's still really smeary. I have to let it go longer before it passes a clean "swipe test" and can be cleanly removed.
