Here’s where I gotta disagree. I don’t think Yvan is as bad as people make him out to be but there is a lot of double speak and contradictions in his former and current videos. As someone that details for money I can’t trust a lot of their products, especially when it comes to durability claims. I put them in the same boat as Adam’s whose products that I have used I’ve liked. But, both companies have outrageous durability claims and if someone is paying damn near $1000 I need to be sure that the product I’m applying will consistently get the results that are promised.
Let’s take Ceramic Gloss and Quick Beads. For both products Yvan has said that you can get between 3 and 12 months of durability. Trusted detailing brands; CarPro, ADS, Gyeon, etc. all mention that their sealants can get between 3-6 months of durability (I’ve seen this in the real world from multiple brands) and their spray on sealants can get up to 3 months of durability. These are tried and true products from these companies yet DIY comes along and their claims are double everyone else yet no one seems to ever actually achieve close to what they promise.
Let’s look at DIY’s 5 year coating and why I don’t trust it. I’ve tried coatings from several brands and the coatings that seem to have the ability to truly get around 5 years have one thing in common, they’re all high solids coatings. P&S Legend & Stout, ADS Quartz Pro and CCI Advanced (my personal premium option) all fall into this category. The ceramic content is much higher than your typical coating and you’ll find that they’re all very viscous and syrupy for lack of a better word. They go on thick and are a bit grabby to remove although I’m finding the newer products are making the leveling step much easier. I don’t think the DIY 5 or 8 year coatings fall into the high solids category. I think ADS Quartz is right at the threshold for being a high solids coating and ADS still only promises 3+ years of durability. Numbers like that I can trust. 5 and 8 years I can’t.
Brands geared towards professional use durability claims that describe their effective coating life which is a measure of how long you should expect the coating should perform at a high level and then you should start to see a tapering of it’s hydrophobics and gloss. Consumer focused brands like Adam’s, McKee’s and I’d add DIY to this list seem to use durability rating that measure how long a coating lasts until it’s completely gone which is deceptive in my opinion.
A bit longwinded but my two cents on the issue.
