Any drag racers here?

Hey Papa, that Caprice weighed 3700 lbs w/ 8" Weld wheels in the rear and 5" Welds in the front, full tank of gas but nothing on the firewall, had a lot of fun in that car, fooled a lot of people on the street!

No I'm racing at Richmond Dragway. I go to Hertford occasionally but I prefer the 1/4. Maybe we will see each other one day :)

Pics or it didn't happen! ha!

Got me a set of A6s coming soon!

Not quite drag, but eh I like to hit the quarter sometimes!

When we had drag strips in Southern California, I would ride my 1975 Kawasaki Z-1B to a couple of the closer strips.
The bike was turbocharged with a draw through single barrel carb. It was putting down 330 hp at the wheel.
Times were;
1/8 mile 5.58 @118.57mph
1/4 mile 9.47 @157.31mph.
Then the strips all closed and there was only street racing.
That was fun for a couple of years until the bets started reaching the moon.
I quit when there were several gunfights over the outcomes of a big money race.
Still have the bike today, but it has not been started in 20 years.

My son (14) and I drag race. He has an 06 MX2 Jr dragster that runs 8.1s @ 81 mph in the 1/8. I run a 70 1/2 Z/28 in Super Gas. 496, PG, 2474 lbs. Pics in my profile. I have racing for almost 30 years and still enjoy it.

To answer directly...Not any more (LOL).

Growing up in SoCal in the 50's-early 60's, spend WAY too much time at the strip. Mostly San Fernando and Long Beach.

It WAS MUCH less expensive (read-cheaper) back then to get involved.

Thats a nice second Gen. Camaro.I converted a former 69 race car to a pro-street but kept the big block 100 octane, turbo 400 with reverse valve body and 12 bolt.

During my college years in the early 70's I did my share of "unsupervised acceleration trials" in and around the Motor City area with a 327-300 horse Chevy SS. When I moved back to Western PA, oval tracks were much bigger than drags and I became a fan of dirt-track outlaw winged Sprint Cars. Eventually, we made the transition from the grandstands to the pits and put a team together.
04SprintCarSharon.jpg

410 cube aluminum SBC, injection on methanol, that dynos at 850 horses (about 50 short of the big-buck guys). Hits the scales at 1500 lbs. with driver and fuel. 60 foot times depend on the truck that's pushing you, as it has no starter, battery, clutch or transmission, but it will pull you from 70 to 120 mph in half a heartbeat. Lap times depend on the track size and contour, but it'll turn 130 mph average at one of the larger half-miles in our area.

The detailing process is quite simple. Knock off the heavy mud with plastic putty knives, blow off the rest with a pressure washer and spray it down with a mud release agent before you push it out on the track.
Lotsa work but lotsa fun too!

I have to assume your cruized either Telegraph or Gratiot for the "unsupervised" stuff as Woodward was over by then, right? Nice to see another Detroiter on the forum!

You got it! By '71, Woodward was for big horsepower money races, way out of a college student's league. Telegraph and Gratiot were more my style. We also often went to Northline Road, behind the airport, for the "organized" street races, meaning a flagman and start/ finish lines.
One time I got a ticket for "exhibition of speed" and the officer said "You may be able to drive like that in Pennsylvania boy, but not around here". Hell, I didn't know anything about leaving hard from a stoplight until I moved to the Motor City!

Here's my H/C trailblazer in December. Still has some improvements to make. Best was 11.96 @ 111mph.

Here's the video from 12/13/2012.

I know where that spot is, Northline and Middlebelt Rd! Being as eastsider I never went over to the westside with my Caprice but did checkout some action over in Rouge park where I saw an Eagle Talon destroy a then new Viper, right then and there I began to respect awd and turbo'd cars! My street racing was French Rd, Lynch Rd, Outer Drive and Harper, 6 and Mt. Elliot, 8 and Mound, Mound and outer Drive and those are just the spots people knew about, then there were the random "stoplight wars" where many people would be surprised by "Frankenstein" (the name I gave the car!) If you know someone who was religiously a part of the street racing scene on the eastside of Detroit in the early 90's they know all about the green 78' Caprice Classic 2 door, trust me! I miss those days....BIG TIME!!!

All fueled up and ready to go. Ill update this thread with my new times.

You know what dude... just record me a CD of that puppy idling! :D
Been so many years gone by since I ran a big cam V8. That distinct exhaust pinging in the headers, then as it rattles down the 3½" pipes to the Flowmaster's and dumps out beneath you on the ground. Ahhhh that's exotic! :)

The last 'big' cam I ran in a small block was a .612 lift, (stock stroke 302, 4 bolt) with Speed Pro 12.7's, shaved 351 heads that were heavily messaged and studded out. The carb sat atop a 'offy' spacer on a Edlebrock intake, and a freaking HUGE NASCAR carb. Remember back then when everyone either ran, or dreamed of running a 650 spread bore? Those just loaded up too bad on that car. The one we had we ran smaller jets in, but it was something crazy like 1120 cfm so it had PLENTY of air and of course mechanical secondaries. (Was too much carb actually, hence the smaller jets, but hey it was tricked out and was FREE from a buddy, because he lost the race.) ;)

These days all that's a lifetime ago. But.... I live vicariously by hanging out at Summit Racing (about 8 minutes away) on cruise nights or the occasional Saturday show. :D

Not really a drag racer but I have taken my car to the track on street tires. You know how that goes. It should run low 11's high 10's eventually but shes just a street car.

Been to the track a few time but never to run my car. If I get that supercharger I've wanted in June I will run low 12s hopefully
