Are my foam pads toast?

What do you think of these pads? Do I have to throw them away or are they still usable? Is the cutting ability of the pad gone? If they're no good then I'll do what Corey does to his, cut them up and use them as tire foam applicators.

New pad:

I have a hard time letting my pads go even though they look damaged or bad. I think pads are expensive so I just don't want to throw them away if I don't have to. I might have a hoarding problem... :(

Thanks for your help!

I keep my highly used pads for "cutting/polishing by hand" areas - but leave them off the machine they are used with.

the bottom pic reminds me of some of the new white lake country pads i have, though it doesn't hurt the functionality of the pads, they turned yellowish...

These are W8006 Meguiar's polishing pads so they are yellow.

Only one way to find out if they've still got some life in them!

Yeah those pads are not done dude.... I can't believe people are telling you to toss those away. I mean... it's still in one piece. When you get chunks flying off or missing then you can start considering a backup plan and a new strategy.

I hate buying pads, I agree I think they are to expensive. I'm not sure if the pads done or not. I would do a test spot and see what results you get

There's no way you're going to get near the results from those pads compared to a new or even somewhat used pad.

The pads will still cut paint and do so effectively. He doesn't need to go out and buy new ones at this point. I have 9006's that I've had for five or more years now that still work and look worse.

It's a matter of opinion, I guess. I would never feel comfortable using pads that look like that.

Thanks for your opinion guys! I appreciate it! I will try to keep this pad but I'll probably switch it out quickly during a detail.

I agree, however I still don't toss mine when they get like that. I use them for jobs that get the swirls shined up. I keep on cleaning and using them until they start getting problematic with leaving marring behind and even then I'm bound to see a dump truck or something that needs polished up so I toss them in a closet somewhere until that dump truck arrives.

I've seen Scottwax use Meguiars pads in that conditon. The Meg polising pads tend to get tired looking, but they work just fine.

It's a matter of *experience* good man. ;) That pad will polish on for a long time.

Are you planning on polishing a dump truck by hand Dave? :D

I would say for paint yea but other uses no. I use my old cutting pads that are done for paint in hard plastic trim pieces on door panels.

Yeah, a tri-axle that was used for hauling asphalt. I'll use nothing but mineral spirits and Q-tips. Think I'll have time for photos? :poke::)
