Bicycle detailing - 1985 Mongoose Expert

All this work on this bike made me get my old Californian out. I just replaced the tires with some new red Comp IIIs, just like when I first got her for Christmas in 83!! She got all new brake cables too!

I apologize for an individual post for each pic, but I am trying to do this by phone, and this is the only way it would cooperate! Can't wait for final assembly pics...

The Comp 3's! Those were the ones to have. I remember my first set too. My friends used to call them butterfly tires. I always called them dog bones.

Looks great man! All the pics do!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Crap, man. That kicks major donkey!!!

Outstanding work there damaged442! Wow thats looking sweet! :dblthumb2: I can't wait to see the finished pictures. Nice looking Cali too! I have an old Healing BMX (NZ bike company from the 80s) sitting upstairs at the shop awaiting resto, it's red, really oxidised red & I can't wait to get Megs #7 into it amongst other needs. Seeing your pictures makes me want to head back to work & get started! Thanks for keeping us up to date!

Watching the Olympic BMX races right now.

WOW the course is FN awesome. Thats one thing that stands out, the course building has actually progressed more than bikes have. The bikes have kind of plateaued.

The course looks like a video game. SICK gap jumps, WOW.

:iagree: Yeah, that track is epic. A bit scary compared to the last time I raced. Some tough racing in those quarter finals, some BIG names & favourites out already. BMX huh, you just never know! Hero one minute, zero the next. Pleased to see our Kiwi boy Trent Jones make it through to the semifinals tomorrow. :dblthumb2: As far as the bike building goes, yeah I kinda agree but the Redline that Sam Willowby from Aussie is riding is pretty trick - full carbon frame. Not too common in BMX. Loved the racing, can't wait until tomorrow now! Although, I will be happier getting up at 4:20am on a non work day unlike today.

Did you see the guy crash on the huge gap jump and his FORKS broke, OUCH!!!

Very cool to see Redline still BMX royalty

Hope I am able to catch the rest of the coverage. Super frustrated with the lack thereof this time

^ those Pro Class II rims were the sheet.

This is awesome! The old school Mongoose Expert came out great. I think I need to shine up my old GT Fueler :)

Redline still going strong for sure, I did see a few DKs on the gate too, They were nice bike in the early years & looking pretty sharp today also. I don't know what the coverage has been like for you but I agree, I think its the worst coverage from the games I have ever seen.

Yep! Snapped those carbon forks good n' proper! OUCH! I carried my bike across the line a few times too, BMXers are T for Tough! Another 4:20am wake up & watch the semifinals for me tomorrow. :dblthumb2:

I have to agree this thread is pretty damn RAD!!! :) I grew up in the 80's as well and I'm a little ticked that I don't remember which BMX I had....I never cared that much, I just wanted a BMX like what I saw on BMX Bandits and RAD and my parents made a stink about how much it cost so like others I worked at my Aunt and Uncles house all summer doing yard work to front my half of the bike. My bike was all chrome I remember that and I remember getting a Mongoose gold stem for Christmas and it killed me to wait until spring (damn Ohio winters) to get it put on. I washed that thing every weekend after my Dad would cut the grass and spray down the sidewalks. We'd be fighting over the hose. Good times! Little did I know that was the start of my OCD tendencies for keeping my means of transportation nice and shiny. Thanks OP for bringing back the memories.

One recurring theme I am noticing is how much these things cost back then and kids having to put up some $$$ to get it. I look in my sons room and see an iPhone, iPad, iPod, pretty nice computer setup, Xbox, Xbox One, flat screen tv, and tons of other expensive crap. He didn't work a damn minute for any of it. I am starting to understand where the "ENTITLED KIDS" crap is coming from. Looks like I might have him come out and help in the yard this week.

OP - sorry for the hijacking of the thread. :hijacked:

We are all waiting patiently for the Mongoose to be finished, that being said I have a couple of pics of my Haro duo. They aren't that old, 2004 models & seeing as they really aren't worth anything money wise & they were the last bikes I raced in anger I think I'll hold onto them . . . wish I'd done that with all the rest of them.

Dude, I friggin' sat thru some synchronized swimming and some other awful dance crap because it said BMX would be on. Never was! I guess the other stuff ran too long? Worst Olympic coverage EVER!!!

So here it is finished and reassembled. It still has some slight pitting from the real trouble spots, but overall it came out well. My son loves it and thinks its great that he and his dad can go ride together!

But now another one found me and needed my help! This one is an 84 Californian. This bike is in much better condition than the Expert, which is definitely a good thing!! Obviously, it needs a few things, but they are on order and I should be getting her together by the end of next week. One interesting thing is the Hutch OGK wheels. I never knew they made them. As much as I would like to find some original Pro Class rims, I think I will leave these on it. They will look good with some black Comp III tires...

Off-topic, but somewhat related... Have you guys seen Turbo Kid?

In the apocalyptic future of '97, there is no guzzoline, only pedal power. BMX/Mad Max/80's fans should find this entertaining.

Better love story than Twilight. No, seriously, quite charming. Lots of gore (albeit cartoonish) though, so you might want to check it out first before sitting down with the little ones. lol

damaged442 - Right on mate! :props: It came out looking real nice considering what you started with, you should be happy. Way cool your son likes it too.

I like the 84 Cali but I too haven't seen the Hutch mags before, I do like them though. Good finding! Please if you get some time, snap a couple of pictures of the team together for us? Thanks for the update & for an awesome post. :dblthumb2:
