So a little background: I have been employed at a marina here on Long Island since 1996. I was hired as a mechanic as I always had that aptitude, but with car experience only. I learned the basics of marine mechanics rather quickly, but it is a very diverse field. Inboard engines, outboard engines, stern drive units, the list is endless and I won't bore anyone by listing them all. So in short, you are always learning...
I was also fortunate enough to have a father that taught me carpentry. Anything from decks, to furniture. I also applied this skill set to the marina in the form of rebuilding the docks, maintaining the buildings, and custom teak woodwork on boats.
In addition, I learned electrical skills (50/30 amp, 110, inverters, and all aspects of DC). I also had to learn to be a basic plumber. Not a master plumber in any way, but basics like water heater replacement, soldering, general repairs, etc. Whew! Lol.
So anyway, I severely hurt my back on December 8th last year. I worked with it until the 6th of January (stupid) until it finally gave way. 2 bulging discs, and another ruptured into a nerve making my right leg numb and unstable.
I've seen back specialists, doctors, and have been working my butt off in physical therapy for almost 7 months. I'm 2 yards from the finish line, and just learned last week that my job will not be there for me when I finish PT. Hmmm.......21 years of service. Might be that my original boss retired, and left the marina to his inept kids. Well, not "might".
So, I went and applied for the head maintenance job at a beautiful newly-renovated hotel/restaurant right on LI Sound. New owners bought it from the family that has owned it since the early 1950's.
Applied Friday, interviewed on Monday, and again yesterday. Job is mine! I'm basically going to be building the maintenance dept. from the ground up, as the old owners did not have a dept. like that and relied on local contractors here & there. They will be hiring 2 more guys, and one part time guy.
So.......... A newly renovated hotel/restaurant/pool is all mine!! I'm very excited for this opportunity, and it's a huge change. But one I will plunge head-on into.
