Sorry for the quick write up on this one...feeling lazy. :D

I did this car a little over a month ago and it was my first go at using the Surbuf pads...I must say I was very impressed with the amount of correction one can achieve with these pads on the DA.

Owner of this car bought it used on a cloudy day and was shocked after washing it and seeing the paint condition in the sun.

Dealer/body shop was nice enough to leave a bunch of compound splatter in the jambs.

Paint was pretty swirled up with lots of RIDS

About 80% of the car had been repainted and there was some very heavy over spray on much of the car. I was able to remove most of it using lacquer thinner and then following that up with clay.

You can see the area I tested here with clay

both sides looked like this...

It was hard getting it all out of the cracks but I was able to remove about 95% of it.

Taping off the clear bra edge....lots of film on this car too. :cursing:

Door after using the Surbuf with M105 on the PCXP.....you can still see light marring but the defects were removed with ease. :)

The process for paint correction was as follows:

  • M105 on the PCXP with 6.5" Surbuf pads
  • M105 on the PCXP with white LC pads
  • Menzerna 106fa on the rotary with Crimson LC pad

LSP was Blackfire Wet-Diamond

Thanks for viewing my work,

:wow: That thing was a mess. Excellent job as always! I bought 5.5" Surbuf pads a long time ago and still haven't used them. How long do they last?

How long do they last?

For you? As long as it takes to use them and then throw them in the trash.

Nice work, Rasky. That paint looked aweful before you got to work on it!

Thanks Richard! :)

I've only used them a few times now but from what others have stated, they won't last as long as a typical foam pad. I've washed them twice now and noticed they curled up a little or "potato chipped" if you will, though it does not seem to affect using them in any way.

At the end of they day, even if they don't last as long, the time saved is well worth it IMO. ;)

According to this ^ the following statement would hold true:

I was laughing until your comment Chad!

It looks like someone washed the car with a worn out wire brush....

Nice save and excellent photography work Chad...

:dblthumb2:

Thanks Mike! The new owner was pretty upset with the car after washing it and seeing it in the sun....never buy a black car on a cloudy day! ;)

To make things worse I had to go and point out the repainted areas, which he obviously didn't see either. Not something I like doing but I feel I need to let them know before I go and work on the car should any issues arise.

Wow that poor thing was hammered. Nice save :dblthumb2:

Here's Rasky showcasing his talent!!! :dblthumb2: :props:

When using the surbuf and PCXP, how much pressure did you apply? Weight of the polisher, light, meduim, heavy?

Thanks Mark! I used the weight of the polisher and very light pressure...though after seeing the thread by KB I plan to mess around with it a little more. ;)

Amazing job!! what size pad did you use with the rotary and 106fa?

Thank you. I used 6.5" pads for most the car and 4" pads for the tight areas. :xyxthumbs:

Rasky, do you ever use Menzerna polishes(SIP, PO106FA, 85RD) with a DA, or do you mostly use a rotary?

I do indeed, but whenever possible I like to use M105/M205 simply because I hate the longer working times of the Menzerna polishes....which seem to take forever on a DA.

When I do use them SIP is almost always on rotary for me as well as PO85RD. I will use 106fa for both DA and rotary and Power Finish is probably the only one I use on the DA 99% of the time. This is because it's almost always used as a 1-step product and I want to be sure I'm 100% hologram free. ;)

At the end of the day I choose what ever product gives me the best results in my test panels. ;)

Cheers,
Rasky

Thanks professor!

Nice, that car is hot for a Cadillac.

You used M105 with the surbuf and then M105 again with the white pad? or did you mean 205?

Nope, M105. ;)

However, I used it in conjunction with a process Todd Helme posted over on TID. I'd link the thread but I think it may be against forum rules.

damn, that with a pc eh? I might have to get me a xp. How do you like it over the original pc ? Im all for details, pm to avoid thread bomb.

Great job man.

Well the final step was with the rotary but the main correction was all DA. The PCXP definitely has more power than the older one but I would suggest trying your current polisher with the Surbuf pads first as I think you will be surprised just how much correction you can still achieve. ;)
